We will also send out a form for LECOM Students to write out questions that we will present on the zoom to the current residents.
September 25, 2024 at 5:56 PMApprovedAMMSA Hoops for Humanity: Charity Week for Orphans & Needy ChildrenAMMSA09/25/202410/26/2024The American Medical Muslim Student Association would like to host a basketball fundraiser to raise funds for the "Charity Week for Orphans and Needy Children" organization. The vision of this organization is to "become a vehicle to inspire young people to become active, socially engaged and united upon our shared Islamic and humanitarian values. Raising money to help countless Orphans and Needy Children across the World is just one outcome. Whatever the problem, no matter how complex or how longstanding, we will always find it easier to solve when we all work together." A $10 fee will be charged to each person interested in participating in the tournament. 100% of the funds raised will go towards the organization. We will use our own club's funds to purchase water, cups, and trophies for the winning team. The tournament will work as a bracket 2-3 point system, first to 21. We will request teams of 3 and have 2 tournaments happening at the same time playing half-court games. A $5 fee will be charged to anyone interested in participating in a free-throw contest happening after the tournament, and a $3 fee for anyone interested in watching the event from the stands. We will have referees and board members to keep track of points and the bracket tournament. We were hoping to host this event on Saturday, October 26th from 9:00 AM-3:00 PM at the LECOM Wellness Center (5401 Peach St, Erie, PA 16509). This weekend seemed to work best with the MS1 and MS2 schedules so we hope to have good attendance for our event. We have emailed and confirmed availability with the Wellness Center and they notified us that we can host our event at the requested date/time.

Second years can brush up on their knowledge and first years can show off what they just learned. It will be a good way to join the two classes as well. Students will participate in a jeopardy-style game in teams of 4 with topics including anatomy, embryology, and histology. There will be a chance to win prizes for the top 3 teams. This event will take place in LHC. To mitigate covid risks, we will ask anyone who is sick to please not attend.

September 28, 2024 at 1:28 PMApprovedInternal Medicine Club Apparel FundraiserInternal Medicine Club09/28/202410/22/2024The Internal Medicine Club will be hosting a LECOM apparel sale as a club fundraiser through Prep Sports Wear. The Internal Medicine Club will earn 15% of sales, which will help support club events and initiatives in the near future. Apparel can be ordered online on a google form. Once the event is approved, and the sale will last for approximately two weeks (ideally the last week of October and the first week of November). Once the sale has run for two weeks, the company will need approximately 2 weeks to fill the orders, and then the orders will be sent out. There will be a group pick up option. For the group pick-up, people place their order online and then pick it up in the LECOM cafeteria a later date designated by the club. To do this, Prep SportsWear will drop off the group pick-up orders to the club's president, Maryam Khan, for the people that selected group pick-up. Maryam will then bring these orders into the school on a designated day after the orders have been given to us, and the club will distribute the remainder of the orders in the cafeteria. The group pick-up allows a more cost effective option for members who do not want to pay for shipping. Dr. Seth H. Carter, D.O., MSMEd, is a board certified in geriatric and family medicine and received his medical degree from Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine. He completed his internship and residency in family medicine at LECOM Health Millcreek Community Hospital, and then completed his fellowship in geriatric medicine at LECOM Health Millcreek Community Hospital. Dr. Carter is going to speak to club members about his path to Geriatrics. He will also be answering questions including but not limited to medical school, residency, fellowships, Geriatrics or any other general questions you may have! The event itself will be happening on November 12th at 6:00pm via Zoom.
September 30, 2024 at 7:59 PMApprovedCustom FIGS scrubs saleLECOM Med Erie - SGA09/30/202411/01/2024LECOM SGA would like to host a figs scrubs sale where students can customize their name on the scrubs as well as the LECOM logo. This will be beneficial to students so they can wear figs scrubs on their rotations and also to lab if required. The offered scrubs colors are navy blue and ceil blue (both colors attached). The scrubs will have the LECOM logo that is already provided by Mr. Bresee and will be white. The scrub sale will start 11/1/2024 and will continue for a month. Orders will take place through a google form that automatically tracks orders. Payment will be made via Zelle to the LECOM SGA account. LECOM SGA will be able to make a profit because there is a 15% discount for bulk orders over 10. Scrubs will be passed out to students in the Vora Lounge the first week back to school after winter break during lunch period (11:30am-1pm) on Wednesday and Friday (1/8/25, 1/10/25).

October 2, 2024 at 5:35 PMApprovedSNMA Hispanic Heritage Month Physician Speaker Q&ASNMA10/02/202410/15/2024Hispanic Heritage Month is from September 15th to October 15th and Dr. David Figueroa has accepted the invitation to speak to students on his experience into and within medicine as an underrepresented minority. SNMA is focused on supporting current and future underrepresented minority medical students and we believe it is important to highlight different cultures to give students increased medical cultural competency. Dr. David Figueroa is a psychiatrist and is affiliated with Millcreek Community Hospital in Erie. He obtained his medical degree from Western University of Health Sciences and his Master of Science in medical education from Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine. He completed his fellowship in child and adolescent psychiatry and his residency at LECOM. Dr. David Figueroa will discuss his path to medicine and discuss the influence of Hispanic Culture on treatment of care. There will be an opportunity for students to ask any questions of interest as well!

The festival gets its name from the row (avali) of clay lamps (deepa) that Indians light outside their homes to symbolize the inner light that protects from spiritual darkness. This festival is as important to Hindus as the Christmas holiday is to Christians. It is celebrated over 5 days with events ranging from decorating homes, feasting, fireworks, and gifts. In celebration of Diwali, APAMSA is requesting to host a volunteer event in collaboration with the Mentoring Club. At this volunteer event, volunteers from both APAMSA and the Mentoring Club will organize and execute several activities for the children at the Erie Kids Club. The event aims to introduce the children to the rich cultural traditions of Diwali through various engaging activities. The activities for the children will be Henna art where volunteers will apply traditional Henna to the children's hands, Rangoli art where children will be guided by volunteers to decorate the blacktop with chalk to make traditional Rangoli patterns, and paper lantern crafting where volunteers will assist children in making decorative paper lanterns. APAMSA will provide all necessary supplies for this event. APAMSA and Mentoring Club volunteers will be responsible for set up and clean up at the Kids Club. A permission slip will be distributed to the children ahead of time, ensuring that parents are informed and consent to their child's participation in the activities. For our SOMA Chapter, we would like to make homemade cards for the residents at LECOM at Village Square. We would like to do this during our lunch breaks from 11:20 - 12:20 on October 28th and 29th, and SOMA would provide all participants with the materials necessary to make the cards. We plan to call LECOM at Village Square ahead of time in order to know what restrictions they have on what can be included in the cards, and how many residents they have to ensure there is a card for each resident. At the time of the event, we plan to provide participants with prompts of what they can include in the card along with a list of what cannot be included in the cards. We hope to be able to carry out this small task and give a smile to the elders in our community.

Currently, he is an assistant professor of emergency medicine at LECOM. He also serves as Regional EMS Medical Director for the PA Department of Health Bureau of Emergency Medical Services. He will be presenting to the LECOM internal medicine club to give a presentation about "How to Succeed on Rotations and Residency" while also explaining the transition from the emergency room to internal medicine care. In doing so, students will get a better understanding of how the two fields work together in admitting and treating a patient, providing an efficient standard of patient care. Club members will be able to attend the presentation to learn how to best prepare and stand out during their rotations and get the residency of their choice. Dr. Risavi will also answer any questions that students may have about rotations or the field of Emergency and Internal Medicine.

For this donation drive, the VFI is requesting personal hygiene products and hats/gloves. The structure of this donation drive will be each item donated counts as 0.5 hours of volunteering, with a maximum of 2 hours that is able to be earned (4 items donated). We are going to collect deodorant, toothbrushes, toothpaste, razors, shampoo/conditioner, body soap, hand soap, hats, gloves, and scarves. The collection bin will be located in the front entranceway starting Monday November 18th and the final collection will be on Friday November 22nd.

Orders will be accepted via google form from 10/22/24 to 10/28/24 at noon! Pick up times will be on 10/29, 10/30, and 10/31 from 11:30-12:20! Each bag is $4 and they will include candy, fruit snacks, anatomy-themed stickers, and squishy skeletons!

The AFJ-ROTC Commandos Competition is a physically demanding military-style athletic event featuring activities such as ropes courses, tire flipping, people carrying, and running. Last year, the responsibility for both first aid and scoring were handled by a single individual (Dr. Chludzinski), which caused delays in event results. This year, she has requested additional assistance specifically for first aid coverage. Our role will be to provide basic first aid services for event participants, such as bandaging, applying ice, and addressing minor injuries. A first aid kit, stocked with essential supplies, has already been donated for use by the club. Additionally, the AFJ-ROTC has requested support in the form of a donation of basic first aid supplies, including bandages, splints, ace wraps, and other items for use during their practices and future competitions. If club funds are available, we would like to explore the possibility of contributing to this request. Dr. Chludzinski will be present to supervise all first aid efforts, ensuring appropriate oversight throughout the event. We believe this is an excellent opportunity for students to engage with the community while gaining practical experience in providing medical support in a real-world setting.

How You Can Help: Donate Items from the "Needs List": We have attached a list of items needed by the shelter, which includes toiletries, clothing, and other essentials that can make a real difference. Although the hour limit is capped at 2, we encourage you to donate as much as you can—every contribution helps!
