November 9, 2018 at 12:29 PMRejectedOverflow Shelter Foot ClinicSOMA11/09/201811/28/2018Over the past few years, LECOM SOMA has conducted a foot clinic at the overflow homeless shelters on Monday evenings between December and late March. The overflow shelter is sponsored by a local place of worship that switches locations every 2 weeks. These shelters offer overnight shelter to the homeless of Erie during the winter months. The overflow shelter is run by volunteers from the sponsoring church as well as local community organizations including Community Health Net and EUMA: Healthcare for the Homeless Partnerships. The role of the volunteering LECOM student includes providing foot care to individuals. This includes washing and drying of the feet, pulse measurements, testing for paresthesias, and identifying cuts/ bruises/ signs of infection. A H&P is taken of each individual and recorded in files that are monitored by Faith Community Nurse, Barbara Lewis, who uses the information for podiatrist and physician follow-ups. Additionally, other nurses are on staff during the entire duration of the foot clinic for consultation by the medical student. Not only are the medical students providing care to the individual, but they are also conveying a fresh, empathetic perception of the healthcare system (as most of these individuals have been burnt by the system). A training session will be held on Wednesday, November 28th at 6:30pm. Students will be introduced to the community and specific problems faced by the homeless population and what is expected of them at the foot clinic. Attendance at this training is required for participation. The first foot clinic will be held on December 3rd and the event runs from 7-9:30pm. The last scheduled date is March 25. A group of 3-4 students (plus myself or Alanna Grafius: Local Healthcare Disparities Coordinators) will volunteer two Mondays in a row followed by a new group of students.
January 11, 2019 at 12:29 PMRejectedRochester SNMA 10th Annual Pre-Medicine ConferenceAllies02/02/201902/02/2019This conference is designed to provide high school students and undergraduate students, many of whom would not otherwise have the opportunity to learn about a medical career, exposure to medicine and an opportunity to talk with medical students and doctors directly about their interests. The conference is organized and run by medical students from the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry Student National Medical Association (SNMA) and has been a huge success over the past years. This year is no exception and we are expecting another 300 students to visit our school for the day. The conference will be Saturday February 2nd, 2019 from 8 AM until 3:00PM PM. The event will include interactive learning modules, meet-and-greet with physicians and medical students, as well as a keynote address by Dr. Ian Wilson, a diagnostic radiologist and alumnus of the Univ. of Rochester. http://www.ursnma.org/
February 11, 2019 at 4:01 PMRejectedJo Coffee FundraiserSOMA02/11/201902/21/2019I would place a bulk order for coffee once the fundraiser ends and then the coffee would be shipped to LECOM. I will then distribute it to students who have purchased. Forty two percent of the proceeds will go to us. Then half of the money can be donated to Love and Hope Children's Home in El Salvador via their website to help buy medication for the children there. The other half will go to Dr. Mendez, an infectious disease physician, at the San Rafael Hospital in San Salvador. She will use the money to buy baby formula for HIV positive mothers and toward installing indoor plumbing for them.
February 11, 2019 at 4:10 PMRejectedBlaze Pizza FundraiserSOMA02/11/201902/25/2019This is the second fundraiser I wanted to organize for my health disparities coordinator position. The first one is the Jo Coffee fundraiser. Since we are raising money for 2 organizations, I thought 2 fundraiser events would raise enough money to donate to both. This one is simple. Students simply show up to Blaze Pizza and show them the flyer for our fundraiser and then Blaze will send a check back to us to donate to our causes. We will receive 20% of the sales profit.

There will also be raffle baskets at the brunch with donations directly going to The Michael J. Fox foundation which is a foundation dedicated to fundraising money for Parkinson’s, which is a condition MS1s are learning about in Neuroanatomy this month. The expenses will be paid for by the class up to $2000 and any other expenses will be split amongst the members joining, however the total amount of spending will be close to $2000. This will happen the first weekend of May in the morning with faculty at a location that has been sought out known as The Cork. The goal of the event is to network, meet senior LECOM students, talk to faculty, donate to the cause of Parkinson’s research, and have brunch together hosted by the Class of 2022.

They provide free counseling, support, burial services, and financial help in these difficult times. They also spread awareness and bring people in the community who have dealt with the same tragedy together to create a local support system. Last year, WHC got involved with this organization and will be volunteering with them again this year. Emma's Footprints is going to talk about their mission since we will be working with them as well as their personal stories of losing a child so we can better understand how to handle these sensitive subjects when we are physicians and maybe even parents someday.
