The Patagonia's allowed for custom embroidery and will feature the school crest logo (attached). Event will take place remotely (with pick up at the school), in the early Fall Semester. Remote Fundraiser - Pick Up location at school. A Google Form will be sent out as soon upon event approval, and the sale will run through late August. The company we will be using is Threadfellows. Multiple types of Patagonia jackets will be offered, including vests, full zip jackets, and quarter zip jackets. Pick up will be COVID-safe in the LECOM cafeteria as students passing out and picking up orders will follow COVID protocols set forth by administration at the time of pick-up.

July 20, 2024 at 8:59 PMApprovedGuest Speaker Dr Shauna Berry, DO Ophthalmologist, Speaking on Ophthalmology and Medical SpanishSpanish Medical Club07/20/202408/30/2024This event will be a dual event with the both the ENT/Ophthalmology Club and Medical Spanish Club where Dr Shauna Berry, DO Ophthalmologist, will be answering questions pertaining to both clubs. Dr Berry is a pediatric ophthalmologist who graduated from NOVA Southeastern University and practices at Florida Lions Eye Clinic in Naples, Florida. This clinic does outreach work in Immigrant communities in southwest Florida where they see primarily Cuban and Puerto Rican Patients. She will be speaking on the challenges and experiences she's had providing care in Spanish speaking outreach settings and as well as how we can get involved in this line of work as physicians in our future. She will also be discussing her career path in Ophthalmology, her fellowships, and recommendations of how to to best pursue ophthalmology as a medical student. We will open it up for questions at the end. The event will be held over Zoom. I have created the meeting link and attached in the announcement below.

Sports available would include volleyball, spikeball, and flag football, and ultimate frisbee.
July 23, 2024 at 12:34 PMApprovedWeekly Mentoring Club VolunteeringMentoring07/23/202409/04/2024We are formally submitting our annual request to resume weekly volunteering with the kids on Wednesdays from 5:30-6:30, starting September 4th. One adult staff member from the YMCA (usually 2-3 are present on a regular basis) will be present at every meeting to be in control and take responsibility for the program and children. As usual, a child will never be alone with a volunteer (there must be at least 3 people in a room/outside for safety and liability reasons. The purpose of the presence of the LECOM students once a week at the Kids Club is to help mentor and facilitate personal growth in the children of the program. We intend on continuing our weekly activities of fun & games while also maintaining a positive atmosphere for everyone to feel safe & welcomed by those from LECOM. The sale will be through Steeles Supply Company. The sale will be completed via an online link (https://www.steeles.com/products/lecom-soma-student-discount-order-form) where students can choose what they would like to buy, pay for the purchase online with credit or debit card. The order will be a bulk order, shipped to the school, and then dispersed to the students. The link, along with a description of the products, will be sent to students via email to let them know of the sale.

July 31, 2024 at 12:38 PMApprovedZooBooPediatrics Club07/31/202410/17/2024LECOM students will have the opportunity to be an assistant volunteer coordinator, stand in front of the entrance gates to direct visitors with tickets, sell buttons to visitors, be a train assistant, be a carousel assistant, dress up as the Erie Zoo Troll, be a booth worker to hand out candy to children, dress up in an animal costume to dance in front of the DJ booth, be a miscellaneous fill-in worker, or be on call during any of the Erie Zoo Boo (trick-or-treating in the Erie Zoo) dates from 5:15-9:15 pm between Thursday October 17th - Wednesday October 30th (including every day between these dates). Students may sign up for as many dates they would like, but may not necessarily be called in to volunteer if they opt for a miscellaneous fill-in or on-call worker.

Seeing how osteopathic medical students face numerous hurdles to overcome until graduation, it is easy to become lost in the curriculum and forget what the end goal for this journey is. SOMA is proud to present Dr. Nichols, as she helps guide students through what it means to be an osteopathic physician, and how to approach leadership roles as students, helping us better prepare for our future as members of the osteopathic community. We welcome students to please join us and learn, from a true pillar of the community, what it means to be a leader in Osteopathic Medicine.

Students will prepare questions to ask Dr. Rapkin ahead of time via a google form, and the Pediatrics and Oncology clubs will have other general questions prepared ahead of time, as well. We will be asking Dr. Rapkin about his journey to becoming a physician, including: medical school, residency, fellowship, as well as his time in his respective specialty of Pediatric Hematology Oncology.

This event will be held on a Saturday to talk to EM club members about respiratory emergencies and airway management as an important clinical skill. There will be a presentation to discuss the importance of airway management, and to familiarize students with protocols and techniques. There will then be a hands-on learning opportunity for students to practice techniques. It will give our members the chance to interact with one another while learning valuable skills they will learn more about on rotations. All equipment for the interactive activity will be provided by Dr. Risavi. A sign-up sheet will be provided for students to participate with a maximum of 30 students allowed to sign-up. Our Club Advisor, Dr. Risavi, has approved of the event and will be in attendance. This event will be held on Saturday September 21st in Lecture Hall A and the OPP Lab from 8:00am – 4:00pm.

We will have our first clinic on 9/11, with each subsequent clinic being on the first Wednesday of every month. They will be from 5:30-7:30 PM in the at the Plaza 38 medical center. This will give students first hand experience with patient interactions while also giving them a chance to practice OMM under the supervision of LECOM Faculty. This clinic will adhere to applicable state, federal, and local regulations. More information is included in the attached document.

Speaking at the event will be Dr Destiny Gmelch, who works in Inpatient peds, newborn nursery, and NICU. The second speaker will be Dr Melinda Liddle, who runs her own practice at an outpatient clinic. The third speaker will be Dr Kristina McKinley, who is a hospitalist in an academic setting. We will open up for questions after each speaker and at the end.

Dr. Coughlin will then walk students through how to close different size surgical incisions, using basic suturing techniques. Students will use kits provided by the Simulation club. These kits will be bought off of amazon by the club, then the students attending the event will repay the club. These kits are $10.00 each. The clinic will be held in the red barn at the Student Learning Center.
August 13, 2024 at 12:14 PMApprovedDry Bag Survival Kit SaleEmergency Medicine08/13/202409/09/2024We would like to host a LECOM Emergency medicine sale to promote and raise funds for the club. We will be selling waterproof ‘survival bags’ which will contain items such as an emergency blanket, cold pack, whistle, bandages, flashlight, etc. This bag will make a nice gift for student’s family members to keep on hand for daily emergencies, it will also be great for students to keep in their cars to be better prepared for everyday life. Our club advisor, Dr. Risavi, is on board with the event and we will be using the updated and approved LECOM logo. Since this is an online sale, all correspondence will be done over email via a spreadsheet. We will do marketing via social media to promote the sale. The sale will take place from September 9th – October 9th 2024 over email. Each bag will cost 50 dollars and distribution will occur in the Fall. We will use the Vora Lounge to distribute orders after all have been placed & fulfilled.
August 16, 2024 at 7:38 PMApprovedMonthly Meditation WorkshopLECOM Med Erie - SGA08/16/202408/26/2024SGA would like to hold monthly meditation workshops led by Dr. Hendryx on the last Monday of every month at 6pm in the yoga room at the wellness center. The goal of this event is to contribute to the new "LECALM" initiative. We aim to provide a space for students to decompress and practice meditation techniques in hopes of improving mental health and wellness. Each month will feature a different type of meditation practice. Students will begin by learning about the meditation topic and then doing a group practice. Topics will be chosen by Dr. Hendryx. The first topic is "an introduction to meditation". It will cover benefits of meditation, goals of meditation, and different basic breathing techniques. Each session will be 30mins-1hr. Students will sign up via a google sheets form as to limit the number of students in the yoga room. The max number of students is 20. In terms of COVID risk mediation, students will be asked to not attend if they have any of the following symptoms (fever, cough, sore throat, headache, GI upset). Additionally, yoga mats will be adequately spaced out. The event will follow all wellness center protocol as instructed by Ms. Zemenak.
