August 19, 2024 at 8:40 PMApprovedMMS Review NightsSOMA08/19/202408/30/2024With the combined effort of SOMA member volunteers and the Pre-SOMA directors at LECOM we would like to host review night Q & A sessions for the MMS students here at our LECOM campus. Our efforts will be focused on mentoring and guiding these students towards understanding anatomy in their own way, with the intent to foster an environment that promotes collaborative learning with open feedback responses from medical students who have already completed anatomy. We believe this could be a great opportunity for MMS students as an opportunity to learn how they will shape their study habits, and for our volunteers it will be an opportunity to reinforce our future physician skills of mentorship and educating.

August 30, 2024 at 6:17 PMApprovedThe Trevor Project Pin Sale FundraiserAllies08/30/202410/01/2024Recently in the US and across the world, there has been increased hate and violence towards the LGBT community, particularly towards the transgender community. Pauly Likens was a 14 year old transgender girl who was brutally murdered this summer about an hour away from Erie in Sharon, PA. This was the 19th violent killing of a transgender person, and the fourth killing of a transgender teenager, since the beginning of 2024. In her memory and to support future LGBT youth, Allies Club will be selling pins during the entire month of October to raise money for The Trevor Project. The Trevor Project is a nonprofit organization that does important advocacy work by supporting transgender youth, campaigning to end conversion therapy, and providing resources for LGBT people. Among the many resources they provide, The Trevor Project is also known for being the leading suicide prevention and crisis intervention organization for LGBTQ+ young people. There will be three pin options for students to choose from. The first is a pin with a rainbow that states "you are safe with me", the second is a heart shaped pin with the progress pride flag on it, and the third is a transgender pride flag that states “protect trans youth”. The pins will be sold for $25 each. The orders will be placed on a google form with money sent via venmo or cash and then Allies club will order the pins and hand them out to students at the end of the fundraiser. Allies Club will reach out to Pauly Likens’ family to obtain permission to make a donation in her honor. If they do not respond or do not allow permission, Allies Club will simply make the donation in memory of the lives of LGBT people who have been lost to anti-LGBT hate. For more information about Pauly Likens from the Human Rights Campaign: https://www.hrc.org/news/remembering-pauly-likens-14-year-old-transgender-girl-killed-in-pennsylvania

This is a great opportunity for LECOM students to explore a popular drink from a different culture while also helping APAMSA to raise funds for future events. This is also a great opportunity to promote an Asian-run business in the area. Fundraising is also a great way to keep membership costs at $0 and encourage students to join and support APAMSA. LECOM students will be able to order and customize their drinks as they’d like at the shop. Students must order in person at the cashier and show the APAMSA flyer to the cashier to show that their purchase is supporting the APAMSA fundraiser. As per the agreement between APAMSA and the Tsaocaa management, 20-25% of the entire order (including food and drink), will go towards APAMSA. The event date would occur October 21st from 5 PM - 10 PM. This date was selected to allow MS2s to relax after their Cardiovascular exam and for MS1s to relax after their Anatomy exams.

Volunteers will help with set-up, passing out refreshments, help with advocacy efforts, promise garden flowers, and cheer along walk participants. The vision of this organization is to "become a vehicle to inspire young people to become active, socially engaged and united upon our shared Islamic and humanitarian values. Raising money to help countless Orphans and Needy Children across the World is just one outcome. Whatever the problem, no matter how complex or how longstanding, we will always find it easier to solve when we all work together." I have provided the following link of the organization for more details: https://charityweek.com/about/. A $10 fee will be charged to each person interested in participating in the tournament. 100% of the funds raised will go towards the organization. We will use our own club's funds to purchase water, cups, and trophies for the winning team. The tournament will work as a bracket 2-3 point system, first to 21. We will request teams of 3 and have 2 tournaments happening at the same time playing half-court games. A $5 fee will be charged to anyone interested in participating in a free-throw contest happening after the tournament, and a $3 fee for anyone interested in watching the event from the stands. We will have referees and board members to keep track of points and the bracket tournament. We were hoping to host this event on Saturday, October 26th from 9:00 AM-3:00 PM at the LECOM Wellness Center (5401 Peach St, Erie, PA 16509).
