Dr. Wilson is a LECOM graduate who now works as a Rheumatologist with the Mount Nittany Physician Group. After his residency in internal medicine, Dr. Wilson waited several years before entering a fellowship in Rheumatology. Dr. Wilson is going to discuss with club members about his path through internal medicine, along with his decision to wait to do a fellowship. Attendees will be able to ask Dr. Wilson about the field of Rheumatology, fellowships, research, and more.
March 16, 2023 at 11:37 PMApprovedCommunity of Caring Donation DriveSpanish Medical Club03/16/202304/10/2023What Is The Volunteer Event: The Medical Spanish Club has recently been in contact with the Community of Caring, which is a wonderful human services agency in Erie, PA, providing shelter and resources for people experiencing homelessness. The CoC is in constant need of everyday items that are provided for the residents at their emergency shelters. Thus, the Medical Spanish Club is hoping to sponsor a donation drive for our club members and other LECOM students to participate in to provide the CoC with a surplus of goods for those in need. When This Will Occur: We are looking to collect donation items throughout the week of April 10-14th. A collection box will be placed inside the security office during this 5-day time period for students to drop off their donation items are their convenience. Angelina Stone, the President of the MSC, will then plan to drop off the donated items to the CoC on that following Saturday, April 15th. Advertisement: An email will be sent out by Dr. Shabloski on behalf of the MSC to MS1s, MS2s, and faculty. The email will contain a short excerpt of the purpose of this donation drive, the drop off dates, and a google spreadsheet to sign up. The signup sheet will display the desired items to be donated to the CoC, and students and faculty will be able to put their name down for what they would be able to provide. We will be offering 0.5 volunteer hours per product, with a cap at 2 volunteer hours per student. Volunteers/Participants: The google document will then give the MSC a headcount on the total number of participants of this donation drive. On April 14th, the end of the collection period, the items donated will be counted by MSC cabinet members in order to confirm the amount donated correlates relative to the number of items expected per the signup sheet. COVID Mitigation Plan: Since all donation items will be collected in a box within the Security Office on LECOM property, all students donating must keep within LECOM’s current COVID guidelines. As of now, students donating are required to wear face masks. Additionally, when Angelina Stone, MSC President, donates the items to the CoC on April 15th, she will be required to wear a face mask in order to abide by the school’s COVID guidelines as well. As the semester concludes, many students are packing up to move to rotation sites or cleaning out for the summer so we think this would be a great opportunity to support the local food bank! Students will be able to donate pantry and non-perishable items for volunteer hours for a maximum of 2 service hours (.5 hours for each item). This will be a contactless event and students will be able to drop off their items by the security office. This will allow students to follow COVID guidelines in place at that time. At the end of the week, items will be picked up by SOMA board members Mia Tornel and Shreeman Nimmagadda. This event will be advertised to the Class of 2025 and 2026. At the conclusion of the event, items will be delivered to Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwestern Pennsylvania.

He is a Pediatric Hematologist and Oncologist at UPMC Children's Hospital in Pittsburgh and will be discussing his path into medicine, application into residency and opportunities, daily routine as a physician working with children diagnosed with cancer, and advice for our fellow LECOM students. He has worked with our clubs for the last few years and has experience on what the LECOM students are interested in and have concerns/questions about regarding his lifestyle, work and home balance, and the struggles he faced during the COVID pandemic and how he adapted to those adverse changes.
March 21, 2023 at 2:42 PMApprovedErie Cancer Wellness Donation DriveOncology Club03/21/202304/03/2023We are hosting a Donation Drive for the Erie Cancer Wellness Center from April 3-April 17. There is a list of items that the Wellness Center is currently in need of: unused scarves/hats, new earrings, plastic/metal wig stands, wig shampoo/conditioner, office supplies (pencils, markers, post-its), hand sanitizers, cancer related books for their library, anti-slip socks, and heating pads. Each item will be worth 0.5 volunteer hours, with a maximum of 2 volunteer hours possible for each student. I have emailed the Security Office asking for their approval to place boxes in the front for the students to place their items in. The Oncology Club will be picking up the donations daily at 5pm and will be placed in Shahnaaz Sakkaria's car. The donations will be dropped off on April 17th at 10 am to the Erie Cancer Wellness Center by Shahnaaz and two of the club members assisting her. We have also partnered with SSP with 2 volunteer hours counting towards that club as well.

She did her medical school at Al-Ameen Medical College, residency at Austin State Hospital, and completed a Child and Adolescent fellowship from Northwestern University in Chicago, IL. With over 15 years of experience as a privately practicing physician she brings valuable insight for students interested in psychiatry in general and the ins and outs of running your own practice. During the event, Dr. Jafry will answer questions asked by students and provide her understanding on what we as students can see as the “light at the end of the tunnel”. Prior to the event we will open up a google document so students can pose questions for Dr. Jafry to answer. Also, as part of our COVID mitigation strategy we will be hosting the event over Zoom.

He will be giving a talk on the mesolimbic pathway via Zoom. The purpose of this lecture is to help students understand the widespread and important effects of opioids on the brain structure and function in greater detail than typically learned in class. Since the lecture will be held over zoom, students will be able to social distance and follow LECOM's COVID guidelines at that time.

This event will be an opportunity for the students who attended convocation to practice their newly learned OMT skills and also provide students a setting to ask questions about convocation. The goal is that after this evening interest will be built among the members of SAAO to plan to attend convocation in the Spring of 2023. The event will be on April 12th at 5 pm in the OPP lab.

We would like to host this celebration on April 28th at 7:00 PM at the Hammocks at Millcreek (4554 Hammocks Dr, Erie, PA 16506). We will be catering food from an outside vendor for dinner and are planning on charging $10 per person to help cover some of the expenses, and would like to use our budget to cover the remaining expenses. Educational purpose: Educate the campus about Eid traditions, celebrate an important Muslim holiday, and help diversify the community COVID mitigation plan: The event will take place in a space big enough for people to be spread out and mask enforcement will be followed based on the COVID case numbers. Vendor choices: As-Salam, Cleveland Grocers, Desi Khabba, or Paradise Biryani Pointe (we have not decided on a restaurant yet but these are our options)

Pins for each of the following systems will be offered: Anatomy (full body), MSK (gold femur), Neurology (brain). Pins are $5 for the 1st one and $4 for any additional. Online orders via Google Form will be accepted starting April 7th, 2023 until Friday, May 13, 2023. Payment will be accepted via cash. For pickup, we will have multiple contactless pickup dates/times available. Currently we would like to have pick up dates on April 18th, 24th, 25th, and 26th between 12 pm and 12:50 pm in the cafeteria. During this time we would also like to encourage new members to join SAACOFP by handing out free SAACOFP merchandise such as pens and pins.

Funding: No funding is necessary for this event. The general breakdown of the event will include a 30 minute introduction from Dr. Ryan Lynch. He can discuss bread and butter cases, unique cases that appeared during practice, etc. In the last 30 minutes, students may ask specific specialty questions. SGA board members will assist in leading the Q&A panels.

Volunteers would be removing invasive Buckthorn saplings and shrubs from the area to keep the trails and grounds accessible for the community. Work gloves and shovels would be provided. We would like to provide volunteers with lunch after cleanup. Asbury woods has given us permission to use their picnic tables on site. Pizza will be purchased and we will submit a reimbursement form. For safe distribution, gloves would be used for distribution of the food and those handling the food would be wearing masks as well. We will also have disinfectant on hand to clean down surfaces and hand sanitizer in the event bathrooms are unavailable. All beverages will be individually packaged.

The general breakdown is that within the timeframe is that the thank you cards will be dropped off to the SGA members via a box by the security office. After 4/24/2023, the SGA members will package the cards and send them to address listed in the attached document. COVID concerns will be mitigated by not having a large number of people present in a small area.

We will be selling waterproof ‘survival bags’ which will contain items such as an emergency blanket, cold pack, whistle, bandages, flashlight, etc. This bag will make a nice gift for student’s family members to keep on hand for daily emergencies, it will also be great for students to keep in their cars to be better prepared for everyday life. Our club advisor, Dr. Risavi, is on board with the event and we will be using the updated and approved LECOM logo. Since this is an online sale, all correspondence will be done over email via a spreadsheet. We will do marketing via social media to promote the sale and masks will be worn on the day of distribution in concordance with the school’s COVID mitigation plan. The sale will take place from August 7th – September 7th 2023 over email. Each bag will cost 50 dollars and Distribution will occur in the Fall. We will use the Vora Lounge to distribute orders after all have been placed & fulfilled.

This preparation is being done by raising awareness and teaching people how to learn three quick actions to control serious bleeding. The EM Club advisor, Dr. Risavi, will be giving this training to students. We will have a sign up sheet and cap the limited number of participants at 45 to adhere to the capacity of Kearsarge. We also will require masks at the event to maintain COVID safety. This event will take place on Tuesday July 25th at Kearsarge Fire Hall from 6pm -9pm.
May 1, 2023 at 1:02 PMApprovedInternational Trauma Life Support CertificationACOS-MSS05/01/202307/28/2023LECOM ACOS-MSS is excited to give members an opportunity to obtain an International Trauma Life Support Certification. Dr. Risavi will be leading the event which will consist of several lectures as well as hands-on skills stations with a practical at the end. This is an opportunity for members to obtain hands-on experience and to learn new skills that are essential for any specialty. Additionally, this certification is similar to a certification that is required during residency (advanced trauma life support), allowing members to gain valuable knowledge on information for the future. The ITLS certification will last all members 3 years. Members who decide to participate will need to purchase and read ITLS for Emergency Care Providers – 9th edition from VitalSource. Additionally, the certification itself will cost approximately $30. The anticipated event will be held on the following dates and times: July 28: 530pm - 10pm July 29: 7:30am - 5pm July 30: 7:30am - 4pm As there are multiple skills stations, we are requesting lecture hall C and D as well as study rooms 1-3 to be reserved on the second floor. Our advisor, Dr. Dr. Risavi will be present. There will also be several other clinicians to assist Dr. Risavi with the event and help administer the practicals. We are anticipating around 20 participants. The educational purpose of this event is to expose students to critical, life saving skills that can be applied to a variety of specialties. This will be a fantastic opportunity to allow students to gain hands-on experience and knowledge, while also being able to obtain a certification. Furthermore, here are the COVID protocols that I ensure are upheld at all ACOS events: 1.) We will have a full roster of every individual who attends the event. 2.) We will create a screening form for all members that sign up and require that they disclose any signs and symptoms, travel history, and close contact history prior to attending. 3.) We will abide by LECOMs current mask policy at the time of the event.

Dr. Pauline Phung would like to come to talk to EM club members about Emergency Medicine as a career and answer any questions students may have. Dr. Phung will present to us about the field of Emergency Medicine, followed by a short interactive activity for students to participate in. It will give our members the chance to interact with healthcare providers within the community and understand the skills that residents in these programs are learning. All equipment for the interactive activity will be provided by the St. Elizabeth Boardman Residency program. We anticipate an activity for intubation, bleeding control, splinting, etc. A sign-up sheet will be provided for students to participate, and masks will be worn to adhere to COVID Regulations. Our Club Advisor, Dr. Risavi, has approved of the event and will be in attendance. This event will be held on Friday September 8th at the Kearsarge Fire Department from 1800-2100.
