February 20, 2022 at 3:07 PMApprovedTyler Christian DobratzLECOM SGA - Medicine - Erie02/20/202204/30/2022Food for Kidz Packing Event Time & Date: 12:00pm -6pm (1 hour set up, two 2 hour volunteer shifts, 1 hour clean up) Location: LECOM Cafeteria (or larger location if volunteer turnout exceeds capacity) Description: Food for Kidz is an awesome organization that helps groups of all sizes set up mobile food packing events to help address and fight hunger around the world. On their website, they have a detailed packet of all instructions and recommendations to set up an event and this packet is attached with this description. In summary, Food for Kidz will deliver the dried food in bulk and all of the equipment needed to set up packing stations. Our volunteers will help set up all the packing stations and supplies. Volunteers then work in teams to pack individual, sealed, fortified rice-soy protein meal packages. Each of these packages provides six servings. These packages are then packed into boxes (216 packages per box) which will then be sent to a child in need somewhere in the world. One box of food will feed a child for approximately 7 months. At the end of the packing session, volunteers will then help load the boxes of packed food and supplies onto the Food for Kidz truck, and the Food for Kidz organization will handle the rest of the distribution and delivery of the food to its destination. Purpose: To provide an opportunity for LECOM to help fight world hunger and volunteer our time to help those in need in our world, and to foster the caring and giving attitude embedded in LECOM’s mission. We hope to hold this event as a large volunteer opportunity open to all LECOM students and faculty, that encourages students and faculty from all disciplines, pathways, and clubs to work together and get to know each other outside of the classroom or otherwise defined roles within other groups/clubs. Volunteers: Open to all LECOM students and faculty Funding: Food for Kidz recommends raising approximately $20 per adult per hour of packing, to cover the costs of the food, supplies, and costs of running the event. After approval of the event, we will send out sign up forms in which volunteers can sign up for the shift(s) they would like. Based on the total amount of people signed up to volunteer for each hour, we can calculate the total amount of money needed to hold the event, which we hope to use SGA funding for. Ex. 50 people volunteering each hour x 4 hours x $20 = $4000 Covid Protocol: All attendees will be required to remain masked for the entirety of their time volunteering. Attendees will follow all guidelines for exposure and symptoms as outlined in the portal screening form. Hand sanitizer will be provided.

March 9, 2022 at 12:55 PMApprovedCharity Miles FundraiserChristian Medical and Dental Association03/09/202204/01/2022We (CMDA) are working together with Radiology Club to hold a fundraiser through the free app called Charity Miles. We are going to make a team on the app that anyone in LECOM (students and faculty) can join. Then on April 1st, we are going to start tracking everyone’s miles on the team. To use the free app, people will just hit “outdoor walk” or “outdoor run” (other options on the app as well) and their miles will be tracked by the app. While they walk or run, the app calculates how much money that person made while they were working out and directly sends the money to charity. The app is free to download and use, and the money is all from sponsors of the company, so there are no sponsors needed for the event. We will send out instructions on how to use the app and how to start a workout. We are also going to keep track of the miles that people walk/run and the top five participants from our school are going to get a twenty dollar gift card. Both of our clubs are going to send out a weekly update of the top five and how much money we have raised as a group. We are going to ask people to raise money for Save the Children and Unicef since they are sending relief to Ukraine, but the app has lots of amazing charities and each individual can choose which one they want to personally support. We know that we are a little late on the one month policy, so if we have to start later in April that is fine, but we are going to be holding the event for a month. Since it is just when people work out, it is a COVID safe event that can be done remotely and all through the app. We are also hoping that this will encourage our fellow students and the faculty to get out and move more in the nicer weather. We would love to answer any questions that you might have!
March 11, 2022 at 11:51 AMApprovedNeuroanatomy Review SessionsSOMA03/11/202203/25/2022As we have done with Gross Anatomy and MMS review nights, SOMA would like to start hosting review nights for Neuroanatomy. Basic neuroscience is notoriously one of the most difficult classes in medical school, and our Eboard feels it would be extremely beneficial to start hosting review sessions. These sessions will be over Zoom starting whenever the event is approved. We will have a sign up sheet for MS1 and MS2 Students to sign up to make review Powerpoints for basic neuroanatomy in exchange for community service hours. Making the presentations will be available to SSP and SOMA members, and the review nights will only be open to SOMA students. We hope this will bridge the gap that MS1's have had with transitioning into more difficult content and systems.

March 14, 2022 at 11:04 AMApprovedFighting the Opioid EpidemicSOMA03/14/202204/28/2022Idea: SOMA will be hosting a talk by Dr. Richard Morgan, DO who is currently a clinical faculty instructor at the NYIT College of Osteopathic Medicine in Old Westbury, NY. This will be a virtual event through Zoom from 6-7PM EST in which Dr. Morgan will share his experience navigating addiction in the past and his path of recovery. He will share how to understand the signs and symptoms of addiction in health care professionals, and he will make us more aware of the ongoing opioid epidemic. Why: One of the pillars of SOMA’s overdose prevention task force is harm reduction. Harm reduction is a public health tactic that is used to reduce the consequences of drug misuse and overdose. Dr. Morgan will identify these consequences as they relate to opioid use, and how we, as medical students, can take action to fight the growing opioid epidemic in the United States. It will also allow students to ask any questions that they may have regarding this issue.
