October 25, 2021 at 10:39 PMApprovedSOMA Toiletry DriveSOMA10/25/202111/15/2021Proposed dates: Monday November 15 – Friday November 19 Alternate dates: Monday November 8 – Friday November 12 Idea: SOMA will be putting together a toiletry drive. When communicating with local Erie schools for the school supply drive, admin stated that there was a great need for toiletries and cleaning supplies at the local community pantry for students and their families. This will be a contactless event, and we propose having collection boxes at the entrance to Main Campus. Students will be able to leave toiletry items for collection. Items will be picked up at the end of the drive by myself (Ellie Schommer) or Co-Chair Garrett Kettle. We will advertise this event to the entire Class of 2024 and class of 2025 so they are able to participate. At the conclusion of the drive, I will arrange a date and time to drop off the supplies to an Erie Community Pantry in need. This will be done in a contact-free manner. Why: SOMA wants to create a COVID-safe opportunity for students to get involved in the Erie community. Having this drive creates an event for LECOM students to reach out and be involved with the Erie community.
October 8, 2021 at 7:46 PMApprovedIntercultural Awareness TrainingSOMA10/08/202111/14/2021The Health Disparities Task Force of LECOM SOMA will be hosting an Intercultural Awareness Training. This event will be geared toward students wishing to learn more about how to be culturally aware, and able to serve and effectively communicate with various populations as a doctor. Students will engage in thought-provoking activities, will learn about the populations that they will be serving, and have the opportunity for questions and discussion in a safe environment. We hope this training session provides a foundation and framework for students to begin their journeys in developing their understanding of diversity, inclusion, and cross-cultural appreciation.

November 7, 2021 at 10:32 PMExpiredManaging Emotions While in Medical School During a PandemicMental Health Task Force11/07/202111/12/2021We will be hosting speaker Bridget DuBrey who has presented a similar talk for Cornell and currently works with Campus Groups. She will do activities with the students and discuss techniques for managing emotions during a stressful time. We would like to use part of our budget to offer students a gift card for lunch if they participate in this workshop. This would be to help take the place of the student breakfasts that were previously offered to students but have not been due to the pandemic. We also recognize that this request is not greater than 30 days prior to the event, but we will not need any LECOM spaces to host the event and the speaker has agreed to present on this date so we are hopeful that we can get this event approved and give students this opportunity to work on stress management techniques going forward.
