March 14, 2022 at 11:04 AMApprovedFighting the Opioid EpidemicSOMA03/14/202204/28/2022Idea: SOMA will be hosting a talk by Dr. Richard Morgan, DO who is currently a clinical faculty instructor at the NYIT College of Osteopathic Medicine in Old Westbury, NY. This will be a virtual event through Zoom from 6-7PM EST in which Dr. Morgan will share his experience navigating addiction in the past and his path of recovery. He will share how to understand the signs and symptoms of addiction in health care professionals, and he will make us more aware of the ongoing opioid epidemic. Why: One of the pillars of SOMA’s overdose prevention task force is harm reduction. Harm reduction is a public health tactic that is used to reduce the consequences of drug misuse and overdose. Dr. Morgan will identify these consequences as they relate to opioid use, and how we, as medical students, can take action to fight the growing opioid epidemic in the United States. It will also allow students to ask any questions that they may have regarding this issue.March 23, 2022 at 11:32 AMApprovedDuke Heme/Onc Fellowship Q&A with Dr. Richard RiedelOncology Club03/23/202204/28/2022Oncology Club would like to welcome all members to attend a Q&A session with returning speaker Dr. Richard Riedel, who is currently the Program Director for the Hematology-Oncology Fellowship at Duke University. This event will include questions created by our Diversity Chair, Rucha, in order to promote discussion about the problems in medicine regarding diversity. This topic is very important to us as an advocacy group, and we take pride in knowing that we can make a difference in the lives of future patients who may face adversity. Without going into hospitals extensively yet, we have not been able to experience the diversity we will experience when we are practicing. SOMA Is hoping that this roundtable discussion will welcome conversations and open discussion about diversity and how we as future physicians can better promote this in our fields. We aim to do this in a nonjudgemental safe space. The SOMA monthly meeting will conclude at 7:00 or earlier, and then this roundtable discussion will take place. Participants will be encouraged to follow COVID safety protocols, and all unvaccinated individuals will be required to wear a mask. Attendance will be taken at this event with a Google Form submitted prior by each participant.March 18, 2022 at 10:53 AMApprovedStop The BleedEmergency Medicine03/18/202204/19/2022The purpose of the STOP THE BLEED® campaign is to make our nation more resilient by better preparing the public to save lives if people nearby are severely bleeding. We will discuss how fatphobia has impacted us personally and continues to be present in our medical journey, and how that has affected our relationship with medical practitioners and could affect our future patients. Using examples from medical and public health literature, we’ll examine our view of obesity as an epidemic and as a measure of mortality risk, and how that has influenced medical perspectives on weight. We will also discuss the genetic and socioeconomic components of weight, and how those might be barriers to thinness. Finally, we will also brainstorm together how we, as future physicians, can help address fatphobia in our practice and make patients more comfortable, such as asking permission to discuss weight and trusting patients to know their own bodies. Those who participate actively will get a $10 gift card, as this event will be in lieu of the monthly breakfast.March 25, 2022 at 2:28 PMApproved"How to Get Into Residency" with Robert Hasty, DO, FACOIInternal Medicine Club03/25/202204/13/2022Dr. Robert Hasty, DO, FACOI, will be speaking to the Club about how to get into the residency of your choice, what you can be doing now and in clinical rotations to stand out from your peers, and anything else you can think of when it comes to the post-merger Match. We are going to make a team on the app that anyone in LECOM (students and faculty) can join. Then on April 1st, we are going to start tracking everyone’s miles on the team. To use the free app, people will just hit “outdoor walk” or “outdoor run” (other options on the app as well) and their miles will be tracked by the app. While they walk or run, the app calculates how much money that person made while they were working out and directly sends the money to charity. The app is free to download and use, and the money is all from sponsors of the company, so there are no sponsors needed for the event. We will send out instructions on how to use the app and how to start a workout. We are also going to keep track of the miles that people walk/run and the top five participants from our school are going to get a twenty dollar gift card. Both of our clubs are going to send out a weekly update of the top five and how much money we have raised as a group. We are going to ask people to raise money for Save the Children and Unicef since they are sending relief to Ukraine, but the app has lots of amazing charities and each individual can choose which one they want to personally support. We know that we are a little late on the one month policy, so if we have to start later in April that is fine, but we are going to be holding the event for a month. Since it is just when people work out, it is a COVID safe event that can be done remotely and all through the app. We are also hoping that this will encourage our fellow students and the faculty to get out and move more in the nicer weather. We would love to answer any questions that you might have!March 21, 2022 at 10:50 AMApprovedSarah SnyderSSP03/21/202204/01/2022We would like to sell a variety of LECOM and SSP specific apparel through Sports Locker which has approved logos that have been used previously by other LECOM Erie and Seton Hill clubs.
