This event will give students opportunities to network and interact with physicians in the Erie area. Each physician and a group of students will get 5 to 10 minutes of Q/A time. We will provide general suggestion questions via email to students of possible topics to discuss with physicians. During this one-hour session at the cafeteria, students will ask physicians questions regarding their specialties. Physicians will be gifted Starbucks gift cards for their generous time (out of the SGA budget). We are in the process of contacting physicians. Covid Protocol: Maintain a log of attendees at the event for contact tracing if possible exposure occurs Students, attendees, and speed dating stations will maintain a social distance of 6 feet. The cafeteria tables will be sanitized during set up and closure of the event. Create a screening form for all members that sign up and require that they disclose any signs and symptoms, travel history, and close contact history prior to attending All attendees will be required to remain masked for the entirety of their time volunteering. Attendees will follow all guidelines for exposure and symptoms as outlined in the portal screening form Hand sanitizer will be provided
April 4, 2022 at 10:26 AMApprovedDiversity in Medicine Roundtable DiscussionSOMA04/04/202204/20/2022After our monthly meeting, SOMA would like to host a roundtable discussion with SNMA and APAMSA clubs. This event will include questions created by our Diversity Chair, Rucha, in order to promote discussion about the problems in medicine regarding diversity. This topic is very important to us as an advocacy group, and we take pride in knowing that we can make a difference in the lives of future patients who may face adversity. Without going into hospitals extensively yet, we have not been able to experience the diversity we will experience when we are practicing. SOMA Is hoping that this roundtable discussion will welcome conversations and open discussion about diversity and how we as future physicians can better promote this in our fields. We aim to do this in a nonjudgemental safe space. The SOMA monthly meeting will conclude at 7:00 or earlier, and then this roundtable discussion will take place. Participants will be encouraged to follow COVID safety protocols, and all unvaccinated individuals will be required to wear a mask. Attendance will be taken at this event with a Google Form submitted prior by each participant.

Dr. Hasty has been the Founding Dean at Idaho College of Osteopathic Medicine, soon to be the founding Dean of the Orlando College of Osteopathic Medicine, and has been a Clinical Associate Professor and Program Director at several institutions, giving him copious experience in medical education in both pre- and post-graduate settings. As part of their Visiting Professors series, the American College of Osteopathic Internists (ACOI) will also be raffling off two books for those in attendance! The items included will hopefully help students relieve some stress as we move into the second half of the semester (Neuroanatomy coloring book, a gift card to local business for coffee or lunch, recipe ideas and/or coffee & tea packets). All items are individually wrapped for COVID safety. Students will be able to come into the Vora lounge during the lunch hour of April 11-13 and choose their items (Maintaining social distancing and room capacity rules).
March 7, 2022 at 12:54 PMApprovedCommunity of Caring Supply DriveSpanish Medical Club03/07/202204/07/2022I am requesting to do a community service event for the Spanish Medical Club – a community drive to benefit the Community of Caring organization as it fits into our mission of wanting to provide and aid to minorities within the local area. We would provide supplies that are needed for those at this organization. I would like everyone that wants to participate to get an hour of service for each item that they donate (a max of 3 hours total). I will create a google drive that students can sign up for and the students can drop off their donations at security. Once the drive ends, my e-board and I will drop off the items at the organization. The purpose of this drive is to provide those less fortunate and the community organization with needed supplies to ensure others well-being and health.

Our plan is to have a group of students offer tutoring during school or after hours for high school level Spanish class students at the local Erie High School. We have been approved by the principal, Dr. Gary Magorien, along with the high school teachers that will be involved with our students. This will set the foundation for medical Spanish later this summer for LECOM students, as well as improve high school student performance in their Spanish courses.

He will be speaking about the Saint Vincent Family Medicine Residency program on Monday, April 4th at 5:30PM over Zoom. He will be sharing general information on the program including curriculum, schedule, and the community. The info session will be followed by a Q&A session. Anyone is welcome to come prepared with questions about the residency program, questions about applications, or just come ready to listen.
March 8, 2022 at 3:40 PMApprovedMaxwell HansenACOS-MSS03/08/202204/03/2022The Surgery Club is planning to host a SIM club skills clinic on Sunday, April 3rd, and Monday April 4th for all 2nd year students to be able to sharpen skills that will be extremely important for their clinical rotations. we plan to have 3 rotating groups that will be using 3 seperate facilities. Lecture hall D (which we checked and has no class that day), Lecture hall C (the 1st years do not have classes that afternoon), and the OPP lab (there are no labs that afternoon). we plan to do a sunday night case study/review night for 2 hours, and then monday from 4 pm to 7 pm we plan to do the skills clinic. the following COVID guidelines will be strictly followed and enforced: 1.) We will have a full roster of every individual who has signed up for the clinic 2.) We will have a check-in for all members and staff who attend the suturing clinic 3.) We will require masks, and uphold social distancing of at least 6 feet 4.) We will sanitize before and after the suturing clinic to avoid the potential spread of COVID 5.) We will create a screening form for all members that sign up and require that they disclose any signs and symptoms, travel history, and close contact history prior to attending 6.) Unvaccinated individuals will be allowed to attend, but they will be placed at a separate table/section in the lecture hall, again maintaining at least 6 feet for proper social distancing.
March 9, 2022 at 12:55 PMApprovedCharity Miles FundraiserChristian Medical and Dental Association03/09/202204/01/2022We (CMDA) are working together with Radiology Club to hold a fundraiser through the free app called Charity Miles. We are going to make a team on the app that anyone in LECOM (students and faculty) can join. Then on April 1st, we are going to start tracking everyone’s miles on the team. To use the free app, people will just hit “outdoor walk” or “outdoor run” (other options on the app as well) and their miles will be tracked by the app. While they walk or run, the app calculates how much money that person made while they were working out and directly sends the money to charity. The app is free to download and use, and the money is all from sponsors of the company, so there are no sponsors needed for the event. We will send out instructions on how to use the app and how to start a workout. We are also going to keep track of the miles that people walk/run and the top five participants from our school are going to get a twenty dollar gift card. Both of our clubs are going to send out a weekly update of the top five and how much money we have raised as a group. We are going to ask people to raise money for Save the Children and Unicef since they are sending relief to Ukraine, but the app has lots of amazing charities and each individual can choose which one they want to personally support. We know that we are a little late on the one month policy, so if we have to start later in April that is fine, but we are going to be holding the event for a month. Since it is just when people work out, it is a COVID safe event that can be done remotely and all through the app. We are also hoping that this will encourage our fellow students and the faculty to get out and move more in the nicer weather. This is part of our clubs mission, to provide cultural awareness and enlighten students on topics and scenarios that could occur in the medical field. I feel this would be beneficial for all students, even those who are not even in the club as we will come into contact with patients from all different backgrounds.

The items include but are not limited to diapers, bottles, blankets, and easter stuffed animals. Then, the E-Board members will assemble "easter baskets" using the donated items and deliver them with the cash donations to Grady's Decision non-profit for distribution. Ryan Smith will be a guest speaker via zoom to explain the mission of the non-profit to members, and give his personal story and inspiration for starting his organization.

Students at LECOM will be donating non-perishable food items in a contactless manner. Food items to be collected include canned goods, pasta, and water. Donations will be collected by Health Disparities director Austen Rankin and dropped off at Second Harvest Food Bank. This drive will run from March 28th to April 1st with a box left in the security office for donations. A sign up sheet will be sent out prior to the event to specify what goods are needed to be donated.

Students will be donating highly needed items for Grady's Decision non-profit organization that helps families who are experiencing financial, spiritual, and emotional hardships as they care for their premie babies. The items needed include Blankets, Rattles, Binky, Gas cards, A book, Burp clothes. Diapers, Wipes, Wubanubs, Little outfit, Chocolate for mommy, Hand written note, Food cards. A spreadsheet will be sent out to the student body to 'sign up' for needed items that together will comprise 5 Easter baskets. Ex: 5 spaces for people to sign up for blankets, 5 spaces for people to sign up for rattles, ect. This will ensure we have equal materials for each basket being donated. We will set up a collection box in LECOM's cafeteria during the week so students can drop off their donated items. Then, the E-Board members will assemble "easter baskets" using the donated items and deliver them to Grady's Decision non-profit for distribution. March 11, 2022 at 11:51 AMApprovedNeuroanatomy Review SessionsSOMA03/11/202203/25/2022As we have done with Gross Anatomy and MMS review nights, SOMA would like to start hosting review nights for Neuroanatomy. Basic neuroscience is notoriously one of the most difficult classes in medical school, and our Eboard feels it would be extremely beneficial to start hosting review sessions. These sessions will be over Zoom starting whenever the event is approved. We will have a sign up sheet for MS1 and MS2 Students to sign up to make review Powerpoints for basic neuroanatomy in exchange for community service hours. Making the presentations will be available to SSP and SOMA members, and the review nights will only be open to SOMA students. We hope this will bridge the gap that MS1's have had with transitioning into more difficult content and systems.
