September 2, 2022 at 9:56 AMApprovedNaloxone TrainingSOMA09/02/202211/07/2022Proposed date: Monday, November 7 th , 2022 from 6-7PM Idea: SOMA’s OPTF will be hosting a Naloxone Training that will be lead by Mili Patel, the Opioid Task Force Director. The session will be a one-hour presentation that will discuss introduction to opioids, history of the opioid epidemic, and the current overdose statistics in the United States. Those who attend the event will be able to respond to an opioid-related overdose with naloxone. Following the event, all participants will receive a certificate of participation and information on how to obtain Naloxone through NEXT Distro. The certificate will be associated with Student Osteopathic Medical Association (SOMA). By the time of this training session, I will have completed the Naloxone Trainer course through Overdose Lifeline, Inc. and I will be certified to provide Naloxone Training sessions to students. This training will be through Zoom as part of our COVID mitigation plan. The Zoom link for the event is attached below: https://us06web.zoom.us/j/86190051793?pwd=bVdqUHU5aHcrS2RlSFdBTXVZdXgxZz09 Why: One of the pillars of SOMA’s overdose prevention task force is naloxone training and distribution. As medical students, it is imperative to advance our education and learn about the various substance use treatment services that are available to us. Through this training, we, as medical students, can take action to fight the growing opioid epidemic in the United States. It will also allow students to ask any questions that they may have regarding this issue.
October 25, 2022 at 12:29 PMExpiredErie Oncology Wellness Center - Wig & Beauty Salon Item DriveOncology Club10/25/202211/07/2022The Erie Oncology Wellness Center is an independent non-profit devoted to helping patients undergoing radiation and/or chemotherapy. One aspect of their care is a Wig & Beauty Salon. They have plenty of wonderful wigs, but lack in the 'beauty' side of make-up and skin care patients. We are planning on gathering supplies to help these oncology patients dealing with hair and skin problems. As for the products gathered, I have this baseline from the clinic: "It seems that the makeup line that would be best is NYX. They are vegan-free and priced fair compared to some of the other brands. For lotions and such, Neutrogena is recommended. Both brands are sold at Ulta. The products we would like to have on hand are face soap/cleaners, face lotion, foundation, powder, blush, eye shadows, eye liners, brow pencils or temp tattoos, lip balms/sticks. Because we have women of all colors, a variety would be great. We don’t expect you to get everything, but any donation of these products would be most helpful as we stock the ‘beauty’ portion of our Wig & Beauty Salon. We are most appreciative of your willingness to help. We would be happy to provide a tax receipt to you if you give us a value on what you’ve donated since we are a non-profit." The drive would run from November 7th to November 14th. Every item donated will count as 0.5 hours for a maximum of 3 hours (as per previous events).
October 5, 2022 at 7:25 PMCancelledErie Otters NightClass of 202510/05/202211/05/2022We want to use our class funds to buy tickets for the Nov 5th otters game. The purpose of this event is to allow for a break from our studies and facilitate a mental health break for our students. Additionally, this would help enhance the camaraderie of the class of 2025 as we head into our final semester of didactic learning. Details: I was thinking 30 tickets based upon a current ongoing poll within the class (could be less). Once the results of the poll is finalized later this week, I will have a set interest of the number of students interested in tickets. The prospective date is Nov 5th at 7 pm. I have spoken with an Otters representative and he said: "Our ticket prices are $14 center ice, $12 west end or $10 east end." If we reserve 30 tickets the cheapest option would be $300 with the most expensive being $420. CARP plan: as this is an event during the (hopefully) low covid incidence rate in erie county, we would not have a specific COVID plan in place. However, each student will be sitting in a designated section surrounded by other lecom students to ensure that the spread of any potential diseases can be limited. Additionally, we will have an exact list of students that attended the event in case there is a need to contact them afterwards. Again, this would be an excellent way for LECOM students to get out and enjoy the many great events that Erie has to offer while also serving as a mental health escape for a few hours!
