This is a fantastic opportunity for osteopathic medical students to advocate to congress on behalf of the profession, as well as network and meet physicians from their home state. There is a training provided by the AOA prior to the congressional meetings to educate students about the issues that will be discussed in the meetings. This year, it is incredibly important to have a good LECOM representation at DO Day, as two LECOM students will be seated on the National SOMA Board of Trustees. Rebecca Wolff will be serving as the next National SOMA President, and I will be serving as the Region I Trustee. Having LECOM students support the mission of National SOMA by advocating at DO day on the Hill would highlight the importance of student participation, and by having a large student representation we will be showing support for Rebecca in this role. I have attached a tentative memorandum provided by the AOA in the additional documents section of this request. We also will issue a sign up sheet to organize housing rooms, making sure to keep male and female students in separate rooms. The proposed bus company is Anderson Coach and Travel. The hotel is DoubleTree by Hilton in Silver Springs. There will be a sign up sheet provided to determine those eligible for attending. As per the LECOM policy on conference travel, any student wishing to attend the conference must have a 3.0 GPA, which will be verified by student affairs prior to accepting a student on the trip. Other eligibility will be determined based on class attendance requirements. If there are still students in excess of how many people we are able to transport, priority will be given to current SOMA officers, previous SOMA officers, and SGA officers. Students will be required to fund their own meals while at the conference unless otherwise provided by the AOA. It will be the responsibility of each student to verify their eligibility status with their advisor, as well as academic standing with Student Affairs, prior to attending. When This Will Occur: We are looking to collect donation items throughout the week of April 10-14th. A collection box will be placed inside the security office during this 5-day time period for students to drop off their donation items are their convenience. Angelina Stone, the President of the MSC, will then plan to drop off the donated items to the CoC on that following Saturday, April 15th. Advertisement: An email will be sent out by Dr. Shabloski on behalf of the MSC to MS1s, MS2s, and faculty. The email will contain a short excerpt of the purpose of this donation drive, the drop off dates, and a google spreadsheet to sign up. The signup sheet will display the desired items to be donated to the CoC, and students and faculty will be able to put their name down for what they would be able to provide. We will be offering 0.5 volunteer hours per product, with a cap at 2 volunteer hours per student. Volunteers/Participants: The google document will then give the MSC a headcount on the total number of participants of this donation drive. On April 14th, the end of the collection period, the items donated will be counted by MSC cabinet members in order to confirm the amount donated correlates relative to the number of items expected per the signup sheet. COVID Mitigation Plan: Since all donation items will be collected in a box within the Security Office on LECOM property, all students donating must keep within LECOM’s current COVID guidelines. As of now, students donating are required to wear face masks. Additionally, when Angelina Stone, MSC President, donates the items to the CoC on April 15th, she will be required to wear a face mask in order to abide by the school’s COVID guidelines as well. One thing they expressed that they are in need of are new backpacks. We plan to hold a fundraiser to collect new backpacks to donate to the USCRI. We will be asking for adult-size backpacks so even as the children grow they will still be able to use them. The goal of this is to provide a thoughtful donation to better the lives of our new community members by enabling them to get an education or travel with ease as they adjust to their new life here in Erie. There will be donation boxes set up in the main entrance lobby of LECOM Main. SOMA members will check the boxes once a day to ensure donation collection and neatness of the area and at the end of the drive deliver donated backpacks to USCRI. Since donations will be able to be made individually, students will be able to social distance and will be required to follow LECOM recommendations on masking during the duration of the drive.March 21, 2023 at 2:42 PMApprovedErie Cancer Wellness Donation DriveOncology Club03/21/202304/03/2023We are hosting a Donation Drive for the Erie Cancer Wellness Center from April 3-April 17. Food for Kidz is an awesome organization that helps groups of all sizes set up mobile food packing events to help address and fight hunger around the world. On their website, they have a detailed packet of all instructions and recommendations to set up an event and this packet is attached with this description. In summary, Food for Kidz will deliver the dried food in bulk and all of the equipment needed to set up packing stations. SGA members will arrive when the truck arrives to start setting up and the first shift of volunteers will help set up anything else we need help with. Volunteers then work in teams to pack individual, sealed, fortified rice-soy protein meal packages. Each of these packages provides six servings. These packages are then packed into boxes (36 packages per box) which will then be sent to a child in need somewhere in the world (last year we were notified that our food was sent to Ukraine!). One box of food will feed a child for approximately 7 months. At the end of the packing session, volunteers will then help load the boxes of packed food and supplies onto the Food for Kidz truck, and the Food for Kidz organization will handle the rest of the distribution and delivery of the food to its destination. Purpose: To provide an opportunity for LECOM to help fight world hunger and volunteer our time to help those in need in our world, and to foster the caring and giving attitude embedded in LECOM’s mission and the foundations of osteopathic care. We hope to hold this event as a large volunteer opportunity open to all LECOM students, that encourages students from all disciplines, pathways, and clubs to work together and get to know each other outside of the classroom or otherwise defined roles within other groups/clubs. Volunteers: Open to all LECOM students, students will sign up on a google sheet in advance which will be limited to approximately 200 packing shifts total. This year, the sheet will have slots separated by each of the five packing tables to ensure volunteers spread out and fill each table evenly. Similarly, less staging/box assembly/loading shift volunteers will be available as discussed with Dr. Shabloski. Please see google sheet example from last year below for reference: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1smdm2KuW2hFjxWuJLnEqmc31rrsIVpk5v3corD4BUEM/edit#gid=0 In addition, as discussed with Dr. Shabloski, we will make a brief powerpoint for volunteers to review prior to coming to their shift, which will outline the steps and roles at each table. This will ensure volunteers will arrive ready to start packing and will not need too much coaching prior to getting started. Funding: Last year we packed nearly 42,000 meals, at 216 meals per box and 194 boxes, priced at ~$36 per box. This equates to a $7000 donation from SGA funds. We plan to stick with this packing amount as our goal, and the $7000 will again come from SGA funds. Additionally 12 tables and 8 folding chairs will be rented from Crazy Monkey in Erie who will deliver and pick up the tables and chairs. This will allow us to form five tables of two for each packing station (one more than last year), one table for check in, and one table for the loading and box making area, with the chairs for check in and one for each station. This will cost approximately $110.80 per the Crazy Monkey website, which will also come from SGA funds. Covid Protocol: All attendees will be required to follow current LECOM masking protocols for the entirety of their time volunteering. Attendees will follow all guidelines for exposure and symptoms as outlined in the portal screening form. Hand sanitizer will be provided. Students who are actively packing at the stations will be required to wear hair nets as well.February 21, 2023 at 11:56 AMApprovedDOnuts for DO'sSOMA02/21/202303/30/2023SOMA will be handing out donuts from Mighty Fine Doughnuts and coffee from the LECOM cafe- free to students, faculty and staff that stop by the LECOM cafeteria the morning of March 30th paid for by SOMA and SAAO.
