"DOnuts for DOs" will be a celebratory event in honor of the beginning of National D.O. Week, it will also serve as a thank you for the LECOM community that has helped all of us get to this point in the semester! A survey will be sent out to SOMA members to gain a count as to how many donuts we will need to order. We will make sure the station will be set up in a socially distant way as well as require those helping pass out the items to wear masks and gloves. We will have hand sanitizer available as well!

Students will be donating highly needed items for Grady's Decision non- profit organization that helps families who are experiencing financial, spiritual, and emotional hardships as they care for their premature babies. We are hoping to collect for 20 - 30 families. The items needed/donated include the following supplies: -Rattles -Pacifier / Wubbanub -Gas Gift Card -Food Gift Cards -Books -Burp Cloths -Diapers -Wipes -Children's outfits -Chocolates/gum / candy for Mom -Handwritten Notes -Travel size stuff for an apartment for 30 days / mental health (for mom): Hand sanitizer / lotions / journals 20 - 30 families if possible - Grady's Decision will supplement if we cannot The clubs will purchase bags from our club funds to put all of the donated items into to gift to the families. A spreadsheet will be sent out to the student body to 'sign up' for needed items that together will comprise 20-30 Easter baskets. Ex: 20 spaces for people to sign up for pacifiers/Wubbanub, 20 spaces for people to sign up for rattles, etc. This will ensure we have equal materials for each basket being donated. We will set up a collection box in LECOM's front office during the week so students can drop off their donated items. We wanted to hold a box by security in the front lobby for the week of March 12- March 25th. Then the following week on March 26th we would like to hold an event at LECOM, where members would put the baskets together for the NICU and for the E-boards of the WHMS and Pediatrics club to deliver them to Grady's Decision non-profit for distribution on March 28th. In addition we where hoping to have a zoom event with Ryan Smith to come and talk about his experience of giving these gifts and what it means to the patients family. I think this would be amazing for the students to see their impact on the patients and where their donations are actually going. This event would take place in the Case Room 117 or Overflow room (or any room with zoom/screen access) on March 26th, the day and time we are putting together the Easter Baskets. This fundraiser would lessen the out of pockets costs to try and garner more people to travel and represent at a national level at convocation. This is a "digital" fundraiser. People will use the link we provide and place their order for a dozen donuts online. They'll then receive a confirmation code that can be taken to any Krispy Kreme across the country for them to receive their order. We did this to try and promote SAAO-Erie at a national level.
February 15, 2024 at 1:52 PMApprovedFood For Kids EventLECOM Med Erie - SGA02/15/202404/20/2024Time & Date: April 20, 2024, from 10:00am to 4:00pm. The event consists of a 30-minute setup, followed by two volunteer shifts lasting 2 hours each, and concludes with a 30-minute cleanup. We will be collaborating with Radiology Club to assist us in set up and clean up. Location: Garage West Building Event Overview: To make a strong event for National DO day, we're thrilled to team up again with Food for Kidz, a remarkable organization committed to combating global hunger. They assist groups in hosting mobile food packing events. A comprehensive guide for event organization is available on their website and attached here for reference. In a nutshell, Food for Kidz will supply the dried food and necessary equipment for packing. Our SGA members and Radiology Club members will begin the setup upon the truck's arrival. Volunteers will then form teams to pack rice-soy protein meal packages, each containing six servings. These packages are placed in boxes (36 packages per box), which are sent globally to children in need. For context, our last contribution went to Ukraine. Remarkably, a single box can sustain a child for about 7 months. The event wraps up with volunteers assisting in loading the packed food onto the Food for Kidz truck. The organization then manages the distribution and delivery. Objective: Our aim is to align with LECOM's mission and the principles of osteopathic care by offering an avenue for students to combat global hunger and serve the less fortunate. This event, open to all LECOM students, fosters collaboration and camaraderie, transcending typical academic or group affiliations. Volunteer Info: All LECOM students can participate, with sign-ups facilitated through a Google sheet capped at around 200 packing shifts. To optimize distribution, slots are categorized by packing tables. We will ensure that students will only be designated to the location they are assigned too so that there is less confusion like there was last year. Additionally, a concise PowerPoint will be shared with volunteers to familiarize them with the packing process, ensuring efficiency upon arrival. Budget: Last year's efforts resulted in approximately 42,000 meals, encompassing 194 boxes at around $36 per box, which translated to a $5000 donation from SGA funds. We intend to maintain this benchmark. Furthermore, 12 tables and 8 chairs will be sourced from Crazy Monkey in Erie for roughly $554.91, as listed on their website. These expenses will be covered by SGA funds. Safety Protocols: Participants must adhere to LECOM's prevailing mask guidelines throughout the event. They should also abide by exposure and symptom criteria as specified in the portal screening form. Sanitizers will be accessible, and those packing will be required to wear hair nets.
February 15, 2024 at 9:02 AMApprovedCasting ClinicACOS-MSS02/15/202402/23/2024LECOM surgery club is excited to put on a casting clinic with Dr. Anthony Ferretti and Dr. Eric Goodrich. This event will give members an opportunity to learn from an orthopedic surgeon how to properly cast. The event will also be extended to the orthopedics club as it is an important skill for them to develop. As a resident at Millcreek Hospital, Dr. Goodrich is well versed in casting and has previous experience working with medical students. Earlier that day he will be giving the LDP pathway a lecture in casting so this event will allow students to learn the material in the classroom and then directly implement that knowledge with a hands on event. The anticipated event will be held on February 23th from 5pm-7pm in the OPP Lab. Our advisor, Dr. Brian Risavi will be present. Furthermore, here are the COVID protocols that I ensure are upheld at all ACOS events: 1.) We will have a full roster of every individual who attends the guest lecturer event The educational purpose of this event is to expose students to a critical skill that requires proficiency in a variety of different specialties. As some students may not have been exposed to this technique yet, this will be a fantastic opportunity to allow students to gain hands on experience and knowledge from a practicing orthopedic surgeon within the LECOM Health system.
February 12, 2024 at 10:13 AMApprovedMMS Review NightsSOMA02/12/202402/23/2024SOMA students will lead review sessions to help guide students on study strategies as MMS students work through the rigor of LECOM curriculum. There was high attendance in the Fall Semester and MMS students have requested it again for the Spring. As MMS students work through the semester, SOMA students who are OMS1s/OMS2s will volunteer their time to host a short, virtual review of the material and high yield topics. SOMA student members will coordinate review content with the faculty teaching the subject (i.e. Anatomy and Dr. Kulesza). As discussed with Dr. Lee, one of our Pre-SOMA Co-Directors will double check that the review material has been reviewed with the course director to ensure accuracy. This virtual review will allow MMS students to focus their studies over the weekend for their tests on the following Mondays and access to review materials used. These reviews will be virtual and held through zoom. MMS students will be alerted through email and their Facebook group. This event will be completely virtual and will follow all social distancing because of the virtual nature of the event, with no in-person assembly required.

Additional pins for the following systems will also be offered: MSK (gold femur) and Neurology (brain). Pins are $5 each. They can be bought in the cafeteria February 26th – February 27th from 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm. During this time, we would also like to pass out free SAACOFP merchandise, such as pens and stickers, to encourage more students to join SAACOFP.

February 9, 2024 at 10:14 AMApprovedInternational Trauma Life Support CertificationACOS-MSS02/09/202408/02/2024LECOM ACOS-MSS is excited to give members an opportunity to obtain an International Trauma Life Support Certification. Dr. Risavi will be leading the event which will consist of several lectures as well as hands-on skills stations with a practical at the end. This is an opportunity for members to obtain hands-on experience and to learn new skills that are essential for any specialty. Additionally, this certification is similar to a certification that is required during residency (advanced trauma life support), allowing members to gain valuable knowledge on information for the future. The ITLS certification will last all members 3 years. Members who decide to participate will need to purchase and read ITLS for Emergency Care Providers – 9th edition from VitalSource. Additionally, the certification itself will cost approximately $30. The anticipated event will be held on the following dates and times: August 2: 530pm - 10pm August 3: 7:30am - 5pm August 4: 7:30am - 4pm As there are multiple skills stations, we are requesting lecture hall A and B as well as study rooms 1-3 to be reserved on the second floor. Our advisor, Dr. Dr. Risavi will be present. There will also be several other clinicians to assist Dr. Risavi with the event and help administer the practicals. We are anticipating around 20 participants. The educational purpose of this event is to expose students to critical, life saving skills that can be applied to a variety of specialties. This will be a fantastic opportunity to allow students to gain hands-on experience and knowledge, while also being able to obtain a certification. Furthermore, here are the COVID protocols that I ensure are upheld at all ACOS events: 1.) We will have a full roster of every individual who attends the event. 2.) We will create a screening form for all members that sign up and require that they disclose any signs and symptoms, travel history, and close contact history prior to attending. 3.) We will abide by LECOMs current mask policy at the time of the event.
February 2, 2024 at 1:09 PMApprovedVolunteer Pinning CeremonyLECOM Med Erie - SGA02/02/202402/29/2024This event has been discussed and planned with Dr. Shabloski, Dr. Ferretti, and Dr. Thielman. This event will occur on February 29th, 2024 in the LECOM atrium from about 5-6pm. Individuals will be awarded for their volunteer service in the class of 2026. Set up of chairs/tables will be coordinated with Mr. King. SGA will also be available to help set up and clean up before and after the event. Thirty-five individuals are personally invited for their service, but they are allowed to bring guests. In total, including all of SGA and staff, we are expecting no more than 100 guests. An RSVP form is being sent out, and a more specific number will be gathered by February 20th so that we can properly accommodate with Mr. King as well as Chef Dupree. Dr. Shabloski will be the MC of the event. He will give a brief intro discussing the impact of all the volunteers. He will then award the top 25%, the top 5%, and then the top 3 individuals. Certificates, pins, and monetary awards will be given. In total, 35 individuals will be getting an award. Brief refreshments will be provided by Chef Dupree. He has agreed to do so, and stated that he will have it ready on a. cart for us to roll over to the atrium. I have also attached the form below.
January 31, 2024 at 5:30 PMApprovedTable Talk on Addiction Medicine with Dr. MorganSOMA01/31/202403/05/2024SOMA's Opioid Task Force will be hosting Dr. Richard Morgan, DO over Zoom to present on addiction in medicine. He will be discussing awareness of how the opioid pandemic can adversely affect anyone including physicians and the consequences of addiction. He will share his own story about his struggle with addiction, the consequences of addiction, and how it affects one’s life in addition to sharing the signs of addiction among healthcare workers and sharing how to help those who suffer from chemical dependency. We think this would be a beneficial perspective to provide students as this is an ongoing issue we will face regularly in clinical practice. The event will be over Zoom to properly accomodate any COVID precautions that could develop in the coming months. About Dr. Morgan: Richard Morgan is a D.O. who graduated from the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1998 and completed his residency in PM & R at NYU Medical Center in 2002. A common dental procedure exposed Dr. Morgan to the world of opiates, which changed his life forever. A series of bad choices and unfortunate circumstances fueled by his addiction led Dr. Morgan to a federal indictment and, ultimately, a 14-year federal prison sentence. Dr. Morgan's remarkable story will show how this addiction evolved, the choice that led to incarceration, and the turnaround that had led him to become a full-time clinical instructor at his medical school where it all began. He now spends his time not only educating the future doctors of America, but Dr. Morgan continues to share his story with the student population, as well as clinicians everywhere, in the hope to not only continue to bring awareness to the the "original" pandemic that has plagued our nation for the past twenty years, but to educate other healthcare personnel on how to recognize the signs and symptoms of addiction, and the resources available to help them.

January 24, 2024 at 6:41 PMApprovedWeekly after-school program with the MCRCInternational Medical Society01/24/202402/01/2024Erie's Multicultural Resource Center (MCRC) holds an after school program everyday from 3-5pm. Through this program, they help guide middle to high school students in their academics and social interactions as they adapt to their new life in the U.S. IMS club has been the main club from LECOM to volunteer and collaborate with the MCRC. In the past, there had been recurring volunteer events with the MCRC and IMS club; however due to COVID, these events had come to a hiatus. Now, there has been a new opportunity for IMS club to lend a hand to the MCRC with their after-school program. IMS club volunteers would come in once a week to help tutor students in math, science, and English. We would volunteer on Wednesdays from 3-5pm at the MCRC located at 554 East 10th Street, Erie, PA 16503. During our time there, there will always be at least 3 adult MCRC staff members to supervise, be in control, and take responsibility for the program and the children. Clearances for PA mandated state laws, including background checks and fingerprint checks are required of all volunteers, and will be completed before attending the program. January 16, 2024 at 9:14 AMApprovedTrivia NightLECOM Med Erie - SGA01/16/202402/05/2024I would like to hold a Trivia Night for the students at 6:00 on Monday, February 5th. The event will for students will start at 6:00 for students, but I will be there at 5:30 to ensure set-up. Set-up will consist of logging into Kahoot (an online app that allowed me to set-up the trivia questions). Students will participate in teams 1-5. Prizes will be given out at the end of Rounds 1, 2, and 3. The winners of those prizes will be determined by whichever team accumulated the most amount of points for that round (the team who scores the most at the end of round 1 will get a prize, the team who scores the most during round 2 will win a prize, etc.). A grand prize will be given out to the team who accumulated the most amount of points throughout all three rounds. The prizes are listed in the document below, and have been approved by the LECOM SGA Board. Trivia Questions are also in the attached document. Each round should take 15-30 minutes, and the whole event should take 60-90 minutes. After the event has been concluded, participants will be expected to promptly leave the lecture hall and SGA will ensure that no mess has been made.
January 12, 2024 at 10:05 AMApprovedDonation Drive for Mental Health Association of NW PennsylvaniaNeuropsych Club01/12/202402/12/2024I would like to organize a donation drive for the Mental Health Association (MHA) of NW Pennsylvania with collections lasting for two weeks: Monday 2-12-24 to Friday 2-23-24. Many of the clients at MHA are unhoused individuals and with the coming winter months it is more important than ever to get these folks what they need to endure. Approximately 25-30% of unhoused people face serious mental health or substance use disorders (1). I believe this to be a good opportunity to help out a population of people that we as future practitioners will invariably treat; from the Psychiatrist's office to the ER. MHA has a premade flier asking for socks, underwear, and T-shirts which you will find attached. I would like to expand the scope of the drive to any usable winter gear that people may be willing to donate. Our point of contact at MHA is Mary Sackett (814-452-4462 ext. 132, MSACKETT@mhanp.org) and she has expressed that any little bit will help. For students that donate I would like to provide them with the maximum number of volunteer hours that is appropriate for such an event: 0.5 hrs per item, with a max of 2 hours. He is a LECOM graduate and is currently the president of national ACOS. His experience in the operating room as a trauma surgeon and surgical critical care will allow him to provide a unique experience to the ACOS members. He will be sharing his journey throughout medical school, residency, fellowship and now as an attending. There will also be a Q&A portion of the event at the end of the talk. Educational purpose: the educational purpose of this event is to provide a first-hand perspective on trauma surgery as some students may not have been exposed to this specialty yet. This will be a fantastic opportunity to allow students to engage with and learn from a practicing surgeon. COVID mitigation protocols: this meeting will be held on zoom.
