Cultural clubs will be making various food dishes to share with the LECOM community to foster community and camaraderie while also helping educate about the many cultures our students come from! Participating clubs include International Medicine, Spanish Club, American Medical Muslim Student Association, Student National Medical Association, and Asian Pacific American Medical Student Association. We confirmed with Dupree that he is okay with individuals bringing in dishes and would be okay utilizing the Vora Lounge and attached the form he signed. We also plan on making any allergen information regarding the dishes known to those who attend.April 4, 2022 at 10:26 AMApprovedDiversity in Medicine Roundtable DiscussionSOMA04/04/202204/20/2022After our monthly meeting, SOMA would like to host a roundtable discussion with SNMA and APAMSA clubs. This event will include questions created by our Diversity Chair, Rucha, in order to promote discussion about the problems in medicine regarding diversity. This topic is very important to us as an advocacy group, and we take pride in knowing that we can make a difference in the lives of future patients who may face adversity. Without going into hospitals extensively yet, we have not been able to experience the diversity we will experience when we are practicing. SOMA Is hoping that this roundtable discussion will welcome conversations and open discussion about diversity and how we as future physicians can better promote this in our fields. We aim to do this in a nonjudgemental safe space. The SOMA monthly meeting will conclude at 7:00 or earlier, and then this roundtable discussion will take place. Participants will be encouraged to follow COVID safety protocols, and all unvaccinated individuals will be required to wear a mask. Attendance will be taken at this event with a Google Form submitted prior by each participant.November 4, 2022 at 3:54 PMExpiredDiscussion on Endocrinology with Dr. Nicole TemofonteInternal Medicine Club11/04/202211/16/2022Dr. Nicole Temofonte, an endocrinologist from the LECOM Seton Hill campus, joins the IM Club to discuss her pathway to a career in endocrinology, what types of patients an endocrinologist sees and their various complexities, and everything else that makes the specialty unique. Dr. Melanie Dunbar will be present for the duration of the meeting as a facilitator along with the members of the mental health task force. We know that medical students are more likely to live with depression, anxiety, and mood disorders (Maser et al., 2019), and that having discussions about our experiences works to destigmatize and reduce stress around seeking treatment (Hankier et al., 2014). An additional reason to have the coinciding painting session will give students a physical activity to focus on to make students feel more comfortable contributing to the discussion and sitting through silent periods. We will discuss different barriers that one might encounter to seeking mental health care, including cultural, geographical, financial, and other societal barriers. We will discuss stigma around mental health illness and treatments, including medications, and ways we can work to break down those stigmas. This will not be a therapy session, it will be a discussion on the difficulties medical students face and the associated stigma and barriers to mental health care. It will also be a place to remind students of the resources and support that they have available to them. This session will be held October 27th at 6pm in the Vora lounge. An RSVP form will be created to determine how many materials to purchase for the event. Materials will be purchased in bulk off Amazon, and unused materials will be saved for a future Goody bag event. Plastic tablecloths will be purchased to protect the tables, the paint will be washable for easy removal, and cleaning materials will be purchased to ensure that the lounge is left spotless after our session. Cleaning up will be done by the members of the Mental Health Task Force, and leftover materials will be added to SGA storage for continued use. “Relative to the general population of postsecondary graduates aged 20–34, medical students aged 20–34 had significantly higher rates of diagnosed mood disorders, diagnosed anxiety disorders, suicidal ideation, and psychological distress.” Maser, Brandon MD; Danilewitz, Marlon MD; Guérin, Eva PhD; Findlay, Leanne PhD; Frank, Erica MD, MPH.
