The intended audience is mainly MS1s but also other MS2 students who would like to get involved in research. The aim of this event is to encourage future scholarly activity, and to provide a formal setting to allow LECOM students interested in participating in research at LECOM and other institutions to hear about the different ways fellow students found their research opportunities (between MS1 and MS2 summer) and ask questions about their experiences. The session will last from 3:30pm to 4:30pm in Vora Lounge the agenda for the session is as follows: 3:30-3:40– Introduction + Basics types research students were involved in 3:40-4:10 – 6 selected students will take 5 minutes each to detail: How they found the opportunity How they got the opportunity/Application process What their project was (briefly) – any clinical aspect? What they liked and/or any drawback to the program (organization?) Are you continuing, or were you given the option to continue your research now? 4:10-4:30 – Breakout sessions; one side of the room will be devoted to discussing research at LECOM, and the other will be devoted to discussing research at other institutions. More MS2s who participated in research this past summer, in addition to the 6 who presented, will be in these groups, and students can ask any questions or have discussions individually with any MS2s who participated in research. All three are LECOM alumni/students: Kent Axcell (current MS4 and former radiology club president), Dr. Henry Wei (current resident at AHN), and Dr. Olivia Hallas (current resident at Cleveland Clinic). The goal is to have the speakers talk about why radiology may or may not be a good fit for you, and how to prepare for rotations and residency. Since the speakers have gone through the residency application process fairly recently, it should be a good opportunity to learn about what to expect from a first-hand account. The event will be over zoom and last no more than one hour.November 16, 2023 at 3:17 PMApprovedHow To Be Competitive in General SurgeryACOS-MSS11/16/202312/20/2023Student Dr. Ashton Amos is a LECOM fourth year student who applied General Surgery this year. She will be sharing her journey throughout medical school, including in the classroom and rotations. There will also be a Q&A portion of the event at the end of the talk. Educational purpose: the educational purpose of this event is to provide a first-hand perspective from a current student who is able to closely relate to the ACOS members. This will be a fantastic opportunity to allow students to engage with upperclassman and ask questions about how she approached her medical school career. COVID mitigation protocols: this meeting will be held on zoom.March 8, 2023 at 5:41 PMCompleteHoops for Humanity: Turkey/Syria Earthquake FundraiserAMMSA03/08/202303/20/2023Turkey and Syria were struck by two devastating earthquakes in the month of February this year. The care and education offered by medical students to this population offers invaluable experience and opportunity to practice our osteopathic values. The Homeless Shelter Overflow was developed in response to the growing homeless population in Erie and the limited resources for shelter during the harsh winter months. The program runs from late November through late March. The overflow is sponsored by a local place of worship for 2 weeks and then switches to another participating location. The overflow shelter is staffed by volunteers from the parishes as well as from community organizations in Erie. The "guests" (homeless) staying at the shelter are housed for the night until 7 am the next morning. The guests have access to showers, personal care products, and a cot. Additionally, they have access to health resources (faith community nurses through Erie United Methodist Alliance: Healthcare for the Homeless Partnerships) and other local organizations such as Community Health Net. Barbara Lewis, RN, is a Faith Community Nurse and director of EUMA Healthcare for the Homeless. She has been instrumental in implementing the healthcare advocacy at the overflow clinic. She has created a strong relationship with both LECOM SOMA and Bridging the Gaps to initiate programs allowing LECOM students to work with underserved populations. Barbara can be contacted at blewis@euma-erie.org or 814-806-5253. She is very enthusiastic about this partnership with LECOM SOMA and requested to share her contact information to anyone whom may have questions regarding this program. The Homeless Shelter Overflow Foot Clinic was started by medical student Sarah Edwards under the direction of Professor, Dr. Sarah McCarthy. The foot clinic is an adjunct to the overflow shelter, allowing medical students to have the opportunity to interact with homeless individuals as well as provide one-on-one healthcare. The foot clinic is scheduled for every Monday evening from approximately 6-9 pm. The first Monday we would potentially look to start is January 14, and the last scheduled date is March 25. The schedule of the dates and locations of each overflow shelter are included in the attachment. Alanna and Angela are hoping LECOM SOMA can continue working with EUMA and the Homeless Shelter Overflow. We would like to continue practicing our best safety practices while being overseen by Barbara during our time at the clinic. Three students will be scheduled at each foot clinic along with a faculty advisor and at least one of the SOMA Local Healthcare Disparities Coordinators (the role that Angela and Alanna hold currently). The students will meet in the LECOM main campus parking lot and commute to the overflow shelter location together. The interaction between the medical student and the guest of the shelter includes taking a history of the patient, documenting it in their chart, testing pedal pulses, examining the feet for signs of infection/open sores. Students also clean their feet with gloves and antiseptic wash while also offering the patient clean, dry socks. Throughout the process, volunteers are educating the patients on when to visit a doctor and the importance of diabetic foot care. The information from the session is used by the Faith Community Nurses as well as a rotating podiatrist who attends the overflow shelter on selected weeks to follow up with the guests. Medical students are required to attend a training session prior to attending foot clinic where they are trained on the homeless community, how to provide foot care, how to document the patient history, and relevant health topics to discuss with the guest. We hope to conduct this session the first week of the spring semester, the week of Jan 7-11. We would like to use the 2nd floor, main conference room. Foot care is a very important aspect in this population as their main form of transportation is on foot, often through the snow with improper foot wear. Many of these individuals also do not have access to soap, running water, or dry towels. Some of these individuals are unable to bend forward and reach their feet. Not only is the medical student providing care and delivering knowledge to the homeless individual, but they are also rebuilding a relationship with the healthcare system. Many of these individuals have been mistreated by healthcare practitioners due to stereotypes and a misunderstanding of the unique needs associated with serving this population. Additionally, this experience will also provide medical students with the opportunity to work with an underserved population and further develop a sense of empathy and understanding aligning with the osteopathic profession.May 9, 2019 at 9:52 AMCompleteHolland GarbaczClass of 202205/09/201905/09/2019The Class of 2022 would like to have a fundraiser when we return in the fall of 2022. We request to use a table in the cafeteria this week, Tuesday 12/17 - Friday 12/20 during the lunch hour to sell the cookies.October 25, 2021 at 10:12 PMApprovedHoliday Card Drive for St. Mary's SLCSOMA10/25/202111/29/2021Idea: SOMA will be putting together a Holiday Card drive. This will be a contactless event, and we propose having collection boxes at the entrance to Main Campus. Students will be able to leave the cards for collection. Items will be picked up at the end of the drive by myself (Ellie Schommer) or Co-Chair Garrett Kettle. We will advertise this event to the entire Class of 2024 and class of 2025 so they are able to participate. At the conclusion of the drive, I will arrange a date and time to drop off the supplies to St. Mary’s Senior Living Center. This will be done in a contact-free manner. Why: SOMA wants to create a COVID-safe opportunity for students to get involved in the Erie community. Having this drive creates an event for LECOM students to reach out and be involved with the Erie community. APAMSA’s wants to spread diversity by celebrating one of the popular and significant holidays of the Hindu community. Holi is a vibrant celebration that involves a lot of dancing, singing, and throwing colored powders. APAMSA is partnering up with the LECOM Mentoring Club to celebrate Holi with the kids at the YMCA. We want to educate the children on what Holi means and to celebrate a joyous and colorful holiday by having them interact with colored powders (paints) that are easily washable and environmentally friendly. Both clubs have gotten approval from YMCA in allowing children to partake in this activity. APAMSA will bring all the materials needed for the event to happen. Both APAMSA and Mentoring Club will be responsible for cleaning the aftermath of the event premises. The event will take place on March 28 at 5:30 – 6:30 PM located at Erie Heights Kids Club. Estimated amount of people attending the event: ~20-30 people All participants will undergo a background check beforehand using the following links: https://epatch.pa.gov/home and https://www.compass.state.pa.us/CWIS/Public/Home No child will be left alone with another participant.February 21, 2023 at 12:32 PMApprovedHoli Cultural FestivalAPAMSA02/21/202303/24/2023Holi, also known as the "Festival of colors" or "Festival of Love," is a Hinduism tradition celebrated across every part of India. The festival is celebrated in March of every year that marks the end of winter and welcomes in the arrival of spring. Holding this event for the student body of Asian Americans at LECOM would be a great way to honor and commemorate the tradition. The event will be available to students, staff, and faculty. We will take precaution/abide by LECOM's COVID protocol by limiting the maximum capacity to 80 people. Using our club funds, we will provide/purchase art supplies to create colorful t-shirts in honor of Holi. This interactive event would be a great way to celebrate the tradition and to spread diversity within LECOM's community.
