Masks are required to donate blood. Here is the website for more info: https://www.ourdonorssavelives.org/donor/schedules/center/1 Address of donation center: 2646 Peach Street Erie, PA 16508April 14, 2025 at 7:18 PMApprovedNeedles & NamasteMental Health Task Force04/14/202505/12/2025This event will offer students the opportunity to participate in guided meditation and acupuncture sessions led by Dr. Esper and Dr. Hendryx who are both licensed in acupuncture. NMDP is an organization that helps people who desperately need stem cell transplants who are unable to find a donor with an HLA match. There is only a 0.001% of a patient finding an HLA match of all six HLA genes from an unrelated donor. If by chance a student is someone’s match, they always have the choice to decline donating. However, donating stem cells is described to be very similar to donating plasma, and through the process students could potentially save someone’s life. The National Marrow Donor Program is willing to provide all necessary cheek-swabbing supplies for this event.February 15, 2025 at 9:05 PMApprovedNational DO Day of Service- Spring CelebrationLECOM Med Erie - SGA02/15/202504/12/2025Purpose: This event is to create a volunteer opportunity for LECOM students to serve their community, specifically the residents at the LECOM Senior Living Center. We also will be using this opportunity to participate in National DO Day of Service. Location: LECOM Senior Living Center (5535 Peach Street Erie, PA 16509) We will be using the common cafeteria area. Tables and Chairs will be provided by the facility. Schedule: 12pm-1pm Setup 1pm-3pm Event with residents 1-2pm West Side Residents 2-3pm East Side Residents 3pm-3:30pm Cleanup Event Plan: We will be participating in different group activities with the residents. There will be stations that the residents will participate in and move throughout. The group activities include arts and crafts, nail painting, card games and a snack station. We will be buying pre-packaged snack items including novelty ice-cream, cupcakes, pre-packed water and juice. The facility will provide popcorn and puff corn for those that have swallowing issues. We will be bringing some spring decoration such as flower patterned tablecloth and flower patterned paper plates/napkins. Due to the size of the venue and the high number of residents, we will separate the residents into two waves based on location and their lunch time. The first wave will be the West Side, and the second wave will be the East Side. We will be opening the event to the DO students to come and volunteer. There will be four different shifts available; set up, the first wave of residents, the second wave of residents and clean-up. SGA will be there to facilitate the event with Dr. Melodie. We are hoping for enough students to create a buddy system with the residents to help with the transporting of the residents from place to place and to ensure that each resident is looked after and interacted with. For those that are not able to participate in the Spring Celebration Event – students can come into the OPP lab April 11th to make Spring cards for the residents and SGA will bring them to the event.March 14, 2025 at 4:09 PMApprovedNational Dance Honors Society WorkshopSports Medicine Club03/14/202504/05/2025The Sports Medicine club will lead an anatomy/stretching workshop for the local National Dance Honor Society. The advisor of the society is Alicea Chudzinski. The volunteers will help lead an anatomy lesson, including stretching, visual aids, and coloring sheets. The workshop will be in place to help the dancers learn anatomy important for learning flexibility and longevity in the sport. Stretching will include flexibility exercises that the dancers can do to warm up for practice, competition, or improve movement to reduce injuries or enhance abilities. Anatomy will be included in the event as well to provide a more detailed basis for as to why stretching is important for dance. As for volunteers, walking around and helping the dancers with anatomy and stretches will prove to reinforce anatomy lessons learned earlier in the year, as well as getting sports medicine club members experience working with athletes. I believe NAMIWalks carries a powerful message, inspiring and advocating "Mental Health for All,” and our club at LECOM envisions a future where all physicians stand together to promote and prioritize mental health as an essential part of every patient's healthcare journey. The fundraiser walk will take place on Sunday, September 14th, 2025, and will be located at Penn State Behrend - Junker Center Parking Lot 5285 Station Rd, Erie, PA 16510. Volunteers will help with passing out refreshments and by being walk guides for the participants. The volunteering period will span from 7:00am - 11am. The session will be a one-hour presentation that will discuss introduction to opioids, history of the opioid epidemic, and the current overdose statistics in the United States. Those who attend the event will be able to respond to an opioid-related overdose with naloxone. Following the event, all participants will receive a certificate of participation and information on how to obtain Naloxone through NEXT Distro. The certificate will be associated with Student Osteopathic Medical Association (SOMA). By the time of this training session, I will have completed the Naloxone Trainer course through Overdose Lifeline, Inc. and I will be certified to provide Naloxone Training sessions to students. This training will be through Zoom as part of our COVID mitigation plan. The Zoom link for the event is attached below: https://us06web.zoom.us/j/86190051793?pwd=bVdqUHU5aHcrS2RlSFdBTXVZdXgxZz09 Why: One of the pillars of SOMA’s overdose prevention task force is naloxone training and distribution. As medical students, it is imperative to advance our education and learn about the various substance use treatment services that are available to us. Through this training, we, as medical students, can take action to fight the growing opioid epidemic in the United States. It will also allow students to ask any questions that they may have regarding this issue.August 21, 2023 at 12:53 PMApprovedNaloxone Administration TrainingSOMA08/21/202309/23/2023On behalf of SOMA's Opioid Task Force, Mili Patel will be hosting a virtual naloxone training event that has been requested by many clubs on campus.
