February 26, 2026 at 8:22 AMApprovedSOMA & Allies Card DriveSOMA02/26/202604/06/2026SOMA & Allies club are excited to announce the collaboration of a card drive from April 6th at 8 am to 10th at 5pm. SOMA and Allies Club will be holding a card drive where students can create or donate handwritten cards with uplifting messages. The cards will be delivered to local nursing home residents to help brighten their days and remind them they are valued and remembered. A drop box labeled for card collections will be placed in the lobby where cards can be placed. Cards made will can be counted towards service hours(1 hour for 5 cards donated for a maximum of 2 hours/10 items). When donating cards, students should put their items in a bag clearly labeled with their name and year (MS1, MS2, etc.). Instagram Spread some kindness SOMA & Allies Club are hosting a Card Drive (April 6th–10th) to help brighten the days of local nursing home residents! You can make your cards and drop them off in the collection box located in the lobby. Cards can be counted towards volunteering with 5 cards = 1 hour of service (maximum of 2 hours total). Make sure to place your cards in a bag or clipped together clearly labeled with your name and year. A small card can make a big difference. Let’s come together to spread positivity, connection, and community!

We are hosting a winter clothing drive to support the Erie US Committee for Refugees and Immigrants. We are hoping to setup a box on campus for students to drop of their donations so that we can gather them for donation.
October 2, 2024 at 5:35 PMApprovedSNMA Hispanic Heritage Month Physician Speaker Q&ASNMA10/02/202410/15/2024Hispanic Heritage Month is from September 15th to October 15th and Dr. David Figueroa has accepted the invitation to speak to students on his experience into and within medicine as an underrepresented minority. SNMA is focused on supporting current and future underrepresented minority medical students and we believe it is important to highlight different cultures to give students increased medical cultural competency. Dr. David Figueroa is a psychiatrist and is affiliated with Millcreek Community Hospital in Erie. He obtained his medical degree from Western University of Health Sciences and his Master of Science in medical education from Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine. He completed his fellowship in child and adolescent psychiatry and his residency at LECOM. Dr. David Figueroa will discuss his path to medicine and discuss the influence of Hispanic Culture on treatment of care. There will be an opportunity for students to ask any questions of interest as well!

The H&P required items are all located in the package and include: reflex hammer, tuning forks, penlight, eye chart, hospital gown, and draping sheet. We will also sell an equipment bag and Maxwell Pocket Reference as optional items. The company we will be using is Steele's Supply Company. We have already contacted the company and gotten an estimate on how much everything will cost. Kit = $26.70 (includes 2 tuning forks, Dejerine hammer, Rosenbaum eye chart, penlight) Medical reference book = $8.95 Total = $35.65 Bag = $50 (initials for free) Additional $7 for full name (The LECOM logo will also be on the front of the bag) Attached is the order form that will go out to first year students. Once the equipment comes in we will distribute it in the cafeteria. Last year the Small Equipment was distributed on November 29th and barring any delivery issues we are expecting the same time frame for this year.

We have done this event before. Every resident gets a nail kit, a lip balm, hand lotion, and use our OPP skills to do hand massages and carpal tunnel relief!

We will be hosting a Halloween celebration at the senior living center on October 31st from 3:30-6:30pm. Residents of the center who wish to participate will be encouraged to paint a pumpkin, play soft pumpkin/ring toss, and trick or treat around the atrium with booths created and staffed by LECOM club members. Invitations are being sent to different clubs currently and if necessary, the event can be downsized or upsized depending on student response and we are working with the recreation coordinator at the SLC to verify activities are acceptable for all residents who wish to join.

He is a Pediatric Hematologist and Oncologist at UPMC Children's Hospital in Pittsburgh and will be discussing his path into medicine, application into residency and opportunities, daily routine as a physician working with children diagnosed with cancer, and advice for our fellow LECOM students. He has worked with our clubs for the last few years and has experience on what the LECOM students are interested in and have concerns/questions about regarding his lifestyle, work and home balance, and the struggles he faced during the COVID pandemic and how he adapted to those adverse changes.

Attendees will enjoy an evening of skating with friends and classmates, contributing to a local senior living center through gift donations. The money collected from the event will be used as funds to purchase any remaining gifts for the seniors Capacity & Registration: The event is limited to 150 attendees due to venue capacity. Registration will be on a first-come, first-served basis via a sign-up form. Students must sign up in advance to secure their spot. The gifts will be at the event and there will be a signup sheet to keep track of gifts and attendance. Waiver forms and proper skating safety will be distributed as per LECOM Sports park policy

Gift signups will close approximately one week prior to the event so that SGA can fill in the remainder of the gifts. SGA will then purchase the remaining gifts in that time to ensure that all residents will receive a gift.
