February 28, 2024 at 8:48 PMApprovedSpanish Workshop for BeginnersSpanish Medical Club02/28/202403/28/2024What Is The Event: The Medical Spanish Club is planning to host a Spanish workshop, taught by MS4, Salvador Hernandez. Sal comes from a Latino family and grew up speaking Spanish; additionally, he has had plenty of knowledge on the importance of speaking Spanish as a healthcare worker. Thus, he is a perfect candidate to teach beginner Spanish to LECOM students! The workshop will be held over zoom, and Sal will focus on teaching Spanish phrases commonly used in a clinical setting and will expand on his experience as a Spanish-speaking medical student to better prepare students for rotations and residency. When This Will Occur: We are looking to hold the zoom session on March 28th, 2024, from 5-6 PM. Advertisement: An email will be sent out by Dr. Shabloski on behalf of the MSC to MS1s and MS2s. The email will contain a short excerpt of the purpose of this Spanish workshop, the date and time it will be occurring, and the zoom information for students to join. Additionally, a message will be sent out on the MS1 and MS2 GroupMe chats for further advertisement. Volunteers/Participants: MSC is expecting to have roughly about 25-50 students attend the zoom session. COVID Mitigation Plan: Since this will be held entirely over zoom, no one participating in the workshop would be at risk of being exposed to COVID-19. Our Primary Contact: If there are any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to Salvador Hernandez at shernandez88575@med.lecom.edu or (626)-297-5015. Education Purpose: This workshop aims to expand students’ Spanish vocabulary, help students become more comfortable speaking Spanish so as to be prepared to implement what they’ve learned during rotations, and to teach students the importance of learning Spanish to establish better doctor-patient-relationships later on in their careers. The e-mail that Dr. Shabloski will send out to MS1/MS2 students and faculty: (Sent on behalf of the Medical Spanish Club) Hi everyone, Medical Spanish Club is excited to be hosting a Spanish workshop on March 28th, from 5-6 PM! The workshop will be held over zoom, and it will be taught by MS4, Salvador Hernandez. Sal grew up in a Latino family and speaks fluent Spanish. Through the last year-and-a-half of his rotations, he’s gained significant knowledge regarding the importance of implementing Spanish in a clinical setting to prevent miscommunication citation errors and provide the best care possible for Spanish-speaking patients. Not only will he discuss this, but he will also be teaching basic Spanish phrases that are commonly used in a doctor-patient interaction. This will give students the basics and help them become more comfortable speaking Spanish during rotations and residency, as well as help to prepare MS1s for the Spanish summer course coming up in just a few months! August 18, 2022 at 5:52 PMRejectedSOMA's Big TrainingSOMA08/18/202209/09/2022This event has already been discussed with Dr. Lee and Dr. Thielman! As requested by Dr. Ferretti, we will be having a mandatory training for anyone who was selected as a Big for SOMA's Big/Little program. We will have Dr. Kevin Klauer give a talk for the first hour (a separate event request has been submitted for this!), and then we will take the second hour (this event request) to cover the overview of the Big program. We will be instructing Bigs on what to do and what not to do, what advice to share with their littles, and what topics to avoid as they are out of our scope as Bigs. The agenda for the meeting will be developed with Dr. Lee, who will be in attendance for the training to ensure we have appropriate faculty oversight. We feel this is an important event to have in person, which is why we have requested reserving Lecture Hall D. We will require all attendees to wear masks, and will practice appropriate social distancing, and follow all other COVID protocols. Attendance will be taken, and a post-event recap will be sent to Dr. Shabloski when the event is complete.
March 29, 2021 at 2:08 PMApprovedSOMA Virtual Cooking NightSOMA03/29/202105/14/2021SOMA wants to encourage members to remain as interconnected as possible during COVID and foster meaningful relationships with their peers. Additionally, we want to provide ample opportunities to attend stress-relieving events and connect with the SOMA club. SOMA wants to host a Zoom Baking event as a social night for our members. This event will remain contactless, as members will be sent a list of ingredients prior, join a Zoom call held by SOMA, and follow along with the instructions provided by SOMA representatives. SOMA also wants to propose having the option to receive ingredients provided by us, as we can buy and pre package these ingredients. An RSVP will be sent out to the members, where they can let us know if they want to receive ingredients from us, and we will set up times that these members can stop by a predetermined location for a no-contact drop off. Based on the RSVP response from this, SOMA will be able to calculate the cost of this event based on the supplies purchased, currently approximated to be less than $100. For the first session, members attending will be able to vote on the baked goods that we cook during the event, and cost can be calculated.

October 25, 2021 at 10:39 PMApprovedSOMA Toiletry DriveSOMA10/25/202111/15/2021Proposed dates: Monday November 15 – Friday November 19 Alternate dates: Monday November 8 – Friday November 12 Idea: SOMA will be putting together a toiletry drive. When communicating with local Erie schools for the school supply drive, admin stated that there was a great need for toiletries and cleaning supplies at the local community pantry for students and their families. This will be a contactless event, and we propose having collection boxes at the entrance to Main Campus. Students will be able to leave toiletry items for collection. Items will be picked up at the end of the drive by myself (Ellie Schommer) or Co-Chair Garrett Kettle. We will advertise this event to the entire Class of 2024 and class of 2025 so they are able to participate. At the conclusion of the drive, I will arrange a date and time to drop off the supplies to an Erie Community Pantry in need. This will be done in a contact-free manner. Why: SOMA wants to create a COVID-safe opportunity for students to get involved in the Erie community. Having this drive creates an event for LECOM students to reach out and be involved with the Erie community.
October 5, 2025 at 8:21 PMApprovedSOMA Sweet Tooth SocialSOMA10/05/202510/30/2025SOMA is excited to announce the SOMA Sweet Tooth Social! After speaking with Dr. Ferretti, we’re thrilled to bring her incredible idea to life: collaborating with local bakeries in Erie to showcase a variety of cultural desserts. This event will provide students with the chance to not only try delicious treats from local bakeries but also learn about the cultural backgrounds behind these baked goods. For just $5, students will receive a ticket to sample 3 desserts, while also getting the opportunity to socialize and connect with others. This is a fantastic way to support local businesses, celebrate cultural diversity, and bring the student community together! Through collaboration with Dr. Ferretti, who has contacted Mr. Dupree, there will be coffee and tea provided by the school as well as a table arrangement for the event. I have been advised by Ms. Spinazzola to submit this form with this note.
