After hearing him talk at SOMA's Summer Leadership Meeting (SLM) in Chicago in July, I have invited Dr. Kevin Klauer, CEO of the AOA, to come speak to our campus on Mentorship in Medicine. Dr. Klauer is a board certified EM Physician who has held many leadership positions with various medical organizations (ACEP, ACOEP, AOA). He has earned numerous awards for his mentorship and leadership, including the 2018 ACOEP Educator of the Year award. Dr. Klauer knows what it is like to be a physician, friend, and mentor, and he shares his experiences so well with students. As part of a panel at SOMA's SLM, Dr. Klauer emphasized the importance of the Mentor-Mentee relationship in medical school as well as while practicing medicine. This talk will be given immediately prior to the Big training session to kick off the Big/Little program for the year. As of now, we are requesting to have this be an in person talk in Lecture Hall D, and will be open to any first or second year student who wants to attend. We will require masks and practice appropriate social distancing. If the COVID climate changes and we need to switch our event to Zoom, we are willing to do so to accommodate the safety of all attendees.

She is board certified in internal medicine, integrative medicine, and palliative care and is currently the medical director of Hospice at Windber. She will be speaking to the students about her journey into medicine, how to navigate being a female physician while raising four children, and will answer any questions about her career and family planning.

Seeing how osteopathic medical students face numerous hurdles to overcome until graduation, it is easy to become lost in the curriculum and forget what the end goal for this journey is. SOMA is proud to present Dr. Nichols, as she helps guide students through what it means to be an osteopathic physician, and how to approach leadership roles as students, helping us better prepare for our future as members of the osteopathic community. We welcome students to please join us and learn, from a true pillar of the community, what it means to be a leader in Osteopathic Medicine.

He has presented at the American Association of Family Physicians (AAFP) Family Experience (FMX) Conference and American Academy of Family Physicians Global Health Summit. He was awarded 3rd place for the American College of Family Physicians (ACOFP) Jeffrey Grove, DO Minority/LGBTQI+ Health Disparity & Wellness Poster Competition, the 2019 APAMSA National Conference Poster Competition Best Poster in Community Health with Asian and Pacific Islander American (APIA) Focus and the Best Scientific Research Poster at the 2019 APAMSA National Hepatitis Conference Poster Competition. Dr. Chin will be discussing his path to a Family Medicine Residency, his previous and current research, as well as general advice from a recent graduate on Tuesday, October 26th at 3PM. Dr. Kalata will be speaking to us on Tuesday, April 9th at 5:30 PM in person about the residency application process, to offer us tips on how to better our residency applications (i.e. what to write/not to write, what to do/not to do on interview day, etc.). The speaking event will be followed by a Q&A session. *All SAACOFP members are welcomed to come prepared with questions, or just come ready to listen. This event will help aspiring family medicine medical students to learn more about the field itself as well as the residency application process from a current osteopathic physician that also serves as a program director. Food will be served in this event.

Pizza will also be served to help promote SAACOFP to students and recruit new members. The pizza will be served in the cafeteria. We will be purchasing pizza from Maria's Pizza and will submit a reimbursement form. For safe distribution, we will make sure that the pizza is precut. Additionally, we will have one person distributing the slices while wearing cloves and a mask. All beverages will be individually packaged.

She did her medical schooling at Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine and completed her Internal Medicine residency at The Ohio State University. She will speak about how to match into a successful top residency program and her experience being a cardiology fellow. Dr. Jasneet is also currently applying for an electrophysiology fellowship, so she will speak about that as well. This event will be happening on zoom (link to be made). Dr. Harris is board certified in Internal Medicine and Hematology and Oncology. He received his medical degree from Kentucky College of Osteopathic Medicine at University of Pikeville, completed residency at Michigan State University Genesys Regional Medical Center; Grand Blanc, MI in Internal Medicine. Then, he completed his fellowship at Michigan State University Genesys Regional Medical Center; Grand Blanc, MI in Hematology and Oncology. Dr. Harris is going to speak to club members about his path to Internal Medicine and Hem/Onc. He will also be answering questions including but not limited to medical school, residency, fellowships, or any other general questions the students may have! The event itself will be happening on November 7th at 6:00pm via Zoom.

Dr. Wilson is a LECOM graduate who now works as a Rheumatologist with the Mount Nittany Physician Group. After his residency in internal medicine, Dr. Wilson waited several years before entering a fellowship in Rheumatology. Dr. Wilson is going to discuss with club members about his path through internal medicine, along with his decision to wait to do a fellowship. Attendees will be able to ask Dr. Wilson about the field of Rheumatology, fellowships, research, and more.
