She will be sharing general information on her path to become a family medicine physician, her osteopathic training, and offering advice to students. The speaking event will be followed by a Q&A session. Anyone is welcome to come prepared with questions about her life, questions about tips, or just come ready to listen. This event will help aspiring family medicine medical students learn more from a current osteopathic physician. Also, it will be a great meeting for those not sure of a specialty to learn more about the field. No person-person contact will occur. No food will be involved in this event. He graduated from Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1997 and completed his residency in internal medicine at Lehigh Valley Health Network in Allentown, PA. At this Q&A session for Internal Medicine Club members, Dr. Graeca is going to discuss his experience in office practice and hospitalist work over his 23 years of clinical practice. Dr. Graeca currently serves as the medical director for behavioral health at Penn Highlands Hospital in DuBois, PA and as the medical director for care in multiple nursing homes, which he is also going to discuss during this session, in addition to student questions.

He completed his internship and residency in family medicine at LECOM Health Millcreek Community Hospital, and then completed his fellowship in geriatric medicine at LECOM Health Millcreek Community Hospital. Dr. Carter is going to speak to club members about his path to Geriatrics. He will also be answering questions including but not limited to medical school, residency, fellowships, Geriatrics or any other general questions you may have! The event itself will be happening on November 12th at 6:00pm via Zoom.

As IMS club is full of students who have either served on medical mission trips before or are passionate to serve in the future, we believe that this would be a great opportunity to learn from an experienced medical missionary. Our IMS club advisor, Dr. Sarah McCarthy will be present for this event and all students will comply with LECOM's COVID-19 policies/guidelines. Dr. Hasty has been the Founding Dean at Idaho College of Osteopathic Medicine, soon to be the founding Dean of the Orlando College of Osteopathic Medicine, and has been a Clinical Associate Professor and Program Director at several institutions, giving him copious experience in medical education in both pre- and post-graduate settings. As part of their Visiting Professors series, the American College of Osteopathic Internists (ACOI) will also be raffling off two books for those in attendance! She currently practices as a Hospitalist at Wellspan Health and is the System Medical Director and head of Patient Logistics and Transfer Center. She has previously worked as a family physician. When not working, she enjoys spending time with her family and rescue dogs! This will be a Virtual Q&A style panel, with questions submitted in advance. The questions will surround the topics of professionalism, health disparities, diversity in healthcare, advocacy for DOs, research, community service, and preventative medicine. The questions will be created in advance by SOMA Eboard and Board of Directors. There will also be a GoogleForm sent to SOMA members allowing them to submit questions in advance for Dr. Taffera to answer, should there be extra time at the end. This event will be open to all members of the LECOM community and will take place as a contactless, virtual event.

September 19, 2022 at 6:23 PMExpiredMentorship Seminar and Skills Clinic with Dr. Marcin JankowskiACOS-MSS09/19/202210/21/2022Dr. Marcin Jankowski, a Trauma surgeon based in Newark, Delaware would like to offer mentorship advice and skills training to our medical students. The previous board members, Max and Ashton, and I have developed a good relationship with the surgeon and his wife (a urologist; however, she cannot attend due to her schedule) and he would love to visit Erie to teach our aspiring surgeons. Drs. Marcin and Meredith Jankowski visited campus last Spring and the event was a huge success with the student body. The outline is as follows: October 21st from 6pm-7pm: Forum led by Dr. Jankowski discussing seeking mentorship as a medical student with an open Q/A following. This portion would take place in lecture hall D, and we would ideally like to open the event to the student body as this topic would greatly benefit everyone—not just members of surgery club. October 22nd from 10am-1:30pm: Educational discussion regarding OR etiquette for 30 minutes in Lecture Hall D. Following this, we would hold a two-part skills training session; a FAST ultrasound exam (lecture hall D) and suturing clinic (Microbiology lab) that the students will rotate between. This event is nearly identical to the event held in the spring which was approved by the administration, aside from opening the Friday forum up to the general student body and focusing on suturing instead of central line placement. I have attached Dr. Jankowski's CV to this event request. Furthermore, here are the COVID protocols that I ensure are upheld at all ACOS events: 1.) We will have a full roster of every individual who has signed up for the clinic 2.) We will have a check-in for all members and staff who attend the suturing clinic 3.) We will require masks, and uphold social distancing of at least 6 feet 4.) We will sanitize before and after the suturing clinic and mentorship discussion to avoid the potential spread of COVID 5.) We will create a screening form for all members that sign up and require that they disclose any signs and symptoms, travel history, and close contact history prior to attending The educational purpose of this event is to expose students to the importance of mentorship in medicine and teach critical skills needed for rotations and beyond. Dr. Jankowski is a very well-distinguished Trauma surgeon that can teach many clinical skills—however, he has chosen to focus on the FAST Ultrasound Exam and suturing for this event. He will be bringing an ultrasound device and professional training mannequin to teach us this skill.

Students will prepare questions to ask Dr. Rapkin ahead of time via a google form, and the Pediatrics and Oncology clubs will have other general questions prepared ahead of time, as well. We will be asking Dr. Rapkin about his journey to becoming a physician, including: medical school, residency, fellowship, as well as his time in his respective specialty of Pediatric Hematology Oncology.

After hearing him talk at SOMA's Summer Leadership Meeting (SLM) in Chicago in July, I have invited Dr. Kevin Klauer, CEO of the AOA, to come speak to our campus on Mentorship in Medicine. Dr. Klauer is a board certified EM Physician who has held many leadership positions with various medical organizations (ACEP, ACOEP, AOA). He has earned numerous awards for his mentorship and leadership, including the 2018 ACOEP Educator of the Year award. Dr. Klauer knows what it is like to be a physician, friend, and mentor, and he shares his experiences so well with students. As part of a panel at SOMA's SLM, Dr. Klauer emphasized the importance of the Mentor-Mentee relationship in medical school as well as while practicing medicine. This talk will be given immediately prior to the Big training session to kick off the Big/Little program for the year. As of now, we are requesting to have this be an in person talk in Lecture Hall D, and will be open to any first or second year student who wants to attend. We will require masks and practice appropriate social distancing. If the COVID climate changes and we need to switch our event to Zoom, we are willing to do so to accommodate the safety of all attendees.
