March 14, 2022 at 11:04 AMApprovedFighting the Opioid EpidemicSOMA03/14/202204/28/2022Idea: SOMA will be hosting a talk by Dr. Richard Morgan, DO who is currently a clinical faculty instructor at the NYIT College of Osteopathic Medicine in Old Westbury, NY. This will be a virtual event through Zoom from 6-7PM EST in which Dr. Morgan will share his experience navigating addiction in the past and his path of recovery. He will share how to understand the signs and symptoms of addiction in health care professionals, and he will make us more aware of the ongoing opioid epidemic. Why: One of the pillars of SOMA’s overdose prevention task force is harm reduction. Harm reduction is a public health tactic that is used to reduce the consequences of drug misuse and overdose. Dr. Morgan will identify these consequences as they relate to opioid use, and how we, as medical students, can take action to fight the growing opioid epidemic in the United States. It will also allow students to ask any questions that they may have regarding this issue.
December 26, 2025 at 8:50 AMExpiredStudent OMM ClinicSAAO12/26/202501/07/2026I. Purpose Students will gain hands-on experience interacting with patients and apply osteopathic manipulative medicine techniques to diagnose and treat musculoskeletal dysfunctions. II. Background Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (Erie campus) is renowned for its osteopathic medical education. Despite its strong educational framework, there is a lack of extracurricular opportunities to interact directly with patients during the preclinical years, which would be essential for medical student professional development and preparation for clerkship years. This lack of accessible clinical experiences prompted the idea for this clinic. It aims to bridge the gap by offering real-world practice opportunities for osteopathic medical students. Exposure to osteopathic manipulative treatment in practice can reinforce their understanding and appreciation of osteopathic principles, thereby fostering a deeper commitment to the methods and practices they are taught. Furthermore, the establishment of this clinic is not only beneficial for the students but also for the community. It provides an essential service to underserved populations, improving healthcare access and outcomes. By integrating osteopathic practices into community healthcare, the clinic promotes the growth and recognition of osteopathy as a vital component of modern medicine. III. Goals and Objectives  Goals: 1. Create a dynamic learning environment where osteopathic medical students can apply their knowledge and hone their clinical skills under the guidance of experienced DOs. 2. Implement best practices for clinic administration, including efficient patient flow, accurate record-keeping, and compliance with healthcare regulations. 3. Provide accessible, high-quality osteopathic manipulative treatment to underserved populations, improving overall health outcomes within the community. 4. Position the clinic as a leading example of osteopathic care within the community, fostering greater acceptance and utilization of osteopathic medical practices.  Objectives: 1. Enhance community health by providing osteopathic manipulative treatment to 10 patients per clinic session. 2. Organize 1 clinic session per month, potentially increasing the number of monthly sessions after the first year. IV. Description  Duration: Each clinic visit will span approximately one hour, allowing time for students and preceptors to engage in practice and patient care.  Location: On campus or Plaza 38 Medical Center  Patient visit: • Mass emails will be sent to invite LECOM faculty, staff, and students as clinic patients. • Prior to each clinic session, all students will participate in preparatory sessions. These sessions will ensure uniformity in approach and readiness among students. • Patient records will be kept as e-charts • One first-year and one second-year student will work together for each visit: o First-year student: Observes and assists with documentation o Second-year student: Conducts history/physical examination, formulates diagnoses, and develops a treatment plan based on findings • The attending physician reviews the students' findings and guides the treatment process. They will provide feedback and reassessment of patient dysfunctions. • The second-year student will perform osteopathic manipulative treatments on the patient and reassess dysfunctions with the attending physician. • Plan for future visit Clinic dates for The 2026 academic year are as follows: 1/7, 2/4, 3/4, 4/1, 5/6. Students will arrive to the clinic by 17:00 to prepare for patients to arrive at 17:30 for the start of the clinic.

January 12, 2024 at 10:05 AMApprovedDonation Drive for Mental Health Association of NW PennsylvaniaNeuropsych Club01/12/202402/12/2024I would like to organize a donation drive for the Mental Health Association (MHA) of NW Pennsylvania with collections lasting for two weeks: Monday 2-12-24 to Friday 2-23-24. Many of the clients at MHA are unhoused individuals and with the coming winter months it is more important than ever to get these folks what they need to endure. Approximately 25-30% of unhoused people face serious mental health or substance use disorders (1). I believe this to be a good opportunity to help out a population of people that we as future practitioners will invariably treat; from the Psychiatrist's office to the ER. MHA has a premade flier asking for socks, underwear, and T-shirts which you will find attached. I would like to expand the scope of the drive to any usable winter gear that people may be willing to donate. Our point of contact at MHA is Mary Sackett (814-452-4462 ext. 132, MSACKETT@mhanp.org) and she has expressed that any little bit will help. For students that donate I would like to provide them with the maximum number of volunteer hours that is appropriate for such an event: 0.5 hrs per item, with a max of 2 hours. Contactless drop-off, while collecting items and while dropping them off will be our COVID mitigation strategy. 1: Padgett DK. October 11, 2024 at 12:16 PMApprovedROTC standbyEmergency Medicine10/11/202411/09/2024I am writing to formally request approval for the participation of our student organization in providing first aid support at the AFJ-ROTC Commandos Competition, which will take place on November 9, 2024, at McDowell Intermediate High School. The AFJ-ROTC Commandos Competition is a physically demanding military-style athletic event featuring activities such as ropes courses, tire flipping, people carrying, and running. Last year, the responsibility for both first aid and scoring were handled by a single individual (Dr. Chludzinski), which caused delays in event results. This year, she has requested additional assistance specifically for first aid coverage. Our role will be to provide basic first aid services for event participants, such as bandaging, applying ice, and addressing minor injuries. A first aid kit, stocked with essential supplies, has already been donated for use by the club. Additionally, the AFJ-ROTC has requested support in the form of a donation of basic first aid supplies, including bandages, splints, ace wraps, and other items for use during their practices and future competitions. If club funds are available, we would like to explore the possibility of contributing to this request. Dr. Chludzinski will be present to supervise all first aid efforts, ensuring appropriate oversight throughout the event. We believe this is an excellent opportunity for students to engage with the community while gaining practical experience in providing medical support in a real-world setting.

As DO2 Max has been experiencing inconsistent participation, events, and campus presence we want to use this as an opportunity to bring all of LECOM together before many of us go away for the summer, while also using it as an opportunity to increase future interest for the club again! Thus we are planning on hosting a kickball tournament against with willing faculty to lift the spirits of all participants after a long semester. If all things go accordingly, it can also be a social event where we can have food or sell t-shirts as a fundraising opportunity with everyone not participating just coming to watch the tournament and socialize! We envision this event launching the excitement needed for one of a couple event ideas we have for the upcoming academic year.
February 21, 2023 at 12:32 PMApprovedHoli Cultural FestivalAPAMSA02/21/202303/24/2023Holi, also known as the "Festival of colors" or "Festival of Love," is a Hinduism tradition celebrated across every part of India. The festival is celebrated in March of every year that marks the end of winter and welcomes in the arrival of spring. Holding this event for the student body of Asian Americans at LECOM would be a great way to honor and commemorate the tradition. The event will be available to students, staff, and faculty. We will take precaution/abide by LECOM's COVID protocol by limiting the maximum capacity to 80 people. Using our club funds, we will provide/purchase art supplies to create colorful t-shirts in honor of Holi.
