This is a great opportunity for students to practice taking blood pressures, while also providing an opportunity to encourage patients to do routine health monitoring and prevention. Student volunteers will bring their own BP cuff and stethoscope. Educational resources for blood pressure reduction will be passed out to anyone interested. Masks will be worn in order to protect ourselves and others from COVID and other similar illnesses, and our advisor, Dr. Carmine D’Amico, will be present too.

SAAO is excited to present an event featuring two physicians and faculty members, Dr. Erick Esper and Dr. Melodie Chludzinski, who will delve into the ways of employing various techniques when patients seek care. This event will take place within the OPP lab and offers what we hope to be a valuable learning experience for those eager to explore the practical applications of the knowledge we amass in our lab sessions. COVID mitigation plan: We will follow the current protocols in place by the school. There are also hand sanitizer all over the OPP lab.

October 3, 2024 at 1:14 PMApprovedRegion 1 Smiles for Smile DaySOMA10/03/202410/28/2024In honor of International Smile Day being in October, as a region we have decided to have each COM's SOMA Chapter in Region 1 do a community service project to put a smile on others faces. For our SOMA Chapter, we would like to make homemade cards for the residents at LECOM at Village Square. We would like to do this during our lunch breaks from 11:20 - 12:20 on October 28th and 29th, and SOMA would provide all participants with the materials necessary to make the cards. We plan to call LECOM at Village Square ahead of time in order to know what restrictions they have on what can be included in the cards, and how many residents they have to ensure there is a card for each resident. At the time of the event, we plan to provide participants with prompts of what they can include in the card along with a list of what cannot be included in the cards. We hope to be able to carry out this small task and give a smile to the elders in our community.

The CEO of Voices for Independence (VFI), Shona Eakins, will come and give a presentation about has as future providers we can provide care that is accessible to people with all ranges of abilities. Three nurses who work at VFI will attend the event with her to demonstrate how to use a hoyer lift to transport people with physical diabilities. All in all, this event will be a way for students to learn about how to better care for this population of people.
July 9, 2025 at 12:59 PMCompleteBarber Beast on the BaySports Medicine Club07/09/202509/06/2025In Conjunction with the orthopedics club we will be volunteering at the barber beast on the bay 10 mile/1mile obstacle course. Club members will have the choice to run the obstacle course as a sponsor of the event, run as a LECOM team, or volunteer as an obstacle monitor to provide assistance to the participants. The 1 mile adapted course is for individuals with physical/intellectual disabilities and the 10 mile is open for the general public. The website says volunteers will help with the 10 mile general event. This event will help support a great cause of raising funds to educated those with disabilities at the barber center and get students involved in a sports medicine related event.

WHO: YogaErie Instructors and LECOM students WHAT: A 60 minute yoga class; $10/ student. All funds will go to Lydia's Love Moments to raise money for children at Ronald McDonald's House. WHERE: LECOM Wellness Center Gymnasium. All yogies will be positioned 6 feet apart and be instructed to bring their own mat or towel. All students will check in and sign a liability waiver if not a member already prior to class beginning, wearing a mask. Once on the mat and ready to start class 6 feet apart, they will be allowed to remove their mask for the duration of the workout. Once class is over, masks will be put back on promptly. WHEN: Saturday, December 3 at 9:30-10:30am WHY: As DO medical students, we know how important it is to exercise and keep our hearts healthy. While raising money for children in need of healthcare, we thought this would be a great way to get actively involved in our fundraiser while also benefitting our student body. Yoga Erie has graciously offered us a class and we feel it would form a great relationship between YogaErie and LECOM while helping support a beautiful cause. We feel that hosting an event at our own location would be easy and convenient for LECOM students, and a great way to utilize our facilities. If there is an issue with hosting at lecom wellness center, we will look into having the event at YogaErie's studio. Thank you!

Since all members paid dues upon joining the club, all of these official members who have paid dues from both first and second year will be receiving this shirt for all of their hard work at volunteering events, fundraisers, and guest speaker networking. For anyone who isn't able to pick up their shirts on December 2nd, between 11:30am-12:30pm, we will be reaching out to them directly to schedule a different time for their shirt pick ups. This will be a contactless event, and we propose having collection boxes at the entrance to Main Campus. Students will be able to leave the cards for collection. Items will be picked up at the end of the drive by myself (Ellie Schommer) or Co-Chair Garrett Kettle. We will advertise this event to the entire Class of 2024 and class of 2025 so they are able to participate. At the conclusion of the drive, I will arrange a date and time to drop off the supplies to St. Mary’s Senior Living Center. This will be done in a contact-free manner. Why: SOMA wants to create a COVID-safe opportunity for students to get involved in the Erie community. Having this drive creates an event for LECOM students to reach out and be involved with the Erie community. March 14, 2022 at 11:04 AMApprovedFighting the Opioid EpidemicSOMA03/14/202204/28/2022Idea: SOMA will be hosting a talk by Dr. Richard Morgan, DO who is currently a clinical faculty instructor at the NYIT College of Osteopathic Medicine in Old Westbury, NY. This will be a virtual event through Zoom from 6-7PM EST in which Dr. Morgan will share his experience navigating addiction in the past and his path of recovery. He will share how to understand the signs and symptoms of addiction in health care professionals, and he will make us more aware of the ongoing opioid epidemic. Why: One of the pillars of SOMA’s overdose prevention task force is harm reduction. Harm reduction is a public health tactic that is used to reduce the consequences of drug misuse and overdose. Dr. Morgan will identify these consequences as they relate to opioid use, and how we, as medical students, can take action to fight the growing opioid epidemic in the United States. It will also allow students to ask any questions that they may have regarding this issue.

Purpose Students will gain hands-on experience interacting with patients and apply osteopathic manipulative medicine techniques to diagnose and treat musculoskeletal dysfunctions. II. Background Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (Erie campus) is renowned for its osteopathic medical education. Despite its strong educational framework, there is a lack of extracurricular opportunities to interact directly with patients during the preclinical years, which would be essential for medical student professional development and preparation for clerkship years. This lack of accessible clinical experiences prompted the idea for this clinic. It aims to bridge the gap by offering real-world practice opportunities for osteopathic medical students. Exposure to osteopathic manipulative treatment in practice can reinforce their understanding and appreciation of osteopathic principles, thereby fostering a deeper commitment to the methods and practices they are taught. Furthermore, the establishment of this clinic is not only beneficial for the students but also for the community. It provides an essential service to underserved populations, improving healthcare access and outcomes. By integrating osteopathic practices into community healthcare, the clinic promotes the growth and recognition of osteopathy as a vital component of modern medicine. III. Goals and Objectives  Goals: 1. Create a dynamic learning environment where osteopathic medical students can apply their knowledge and hone their clinical skills under the guidance of experienced DOs. 2. Implement best practices for clinic administration, including efficient patient flow, accurate record-keeping, and compliance with healthcare regulations. 3. Provide accessible, high-quality osteopathic manipulative treatment to underserved populations, improving overall health outcomes within the community. 4. Position the clinic as a leading example of osteopathic care within the community, fostering greater acceptance and utilization of osteopathic medical practices.  Objectives: 1. Enhance community health by providing osteopathic manipulative treatment to 10 patients per clinic session. 2. Organize 1 clinic session per month, potentially increasing the number of monthly sessions after the first year. IV. Description  Duration: Each clinic visit will span approximately one hour, allowing time for students and preceptors to engage in practice and patient care.  Location: On campus or Plaza 38 Medical Center  Patient visit: • Mass emails will be sent to invite LECOM faculty, staff, and students as clinic patients. • Prior to each clinic session, all students will participate in preparatory sessions. These sessions will ensure uniformity in approach and readiness among students. • Patient records will be kept as e-charts • One first-year and one second-year student will work together for each visit: o First-year student: Observes and assists with documentation o Second-year student: Conducts history/physical examination, formulates diagnoses, and develops a treatment plan based on findings • The attending physician reviews the students' findings and guides the treatment process. They will provide feedback and reassessment of patient dysfunctions. • The second-year student will perform osteopathic manipulative treatments on the patient and reassess dysfunctions with the attending physician. • Plan for future visit Clinic dates for The 2026 academic year are as follows: 1/7, 2/4, 3/4, 4/1, 5/6. Students will arrive to the clinic by 17:00 to prepare for patients to arrive at 17:30 for the start of the clinic.
February 11, 2019 at 4:01 PMRejectedJo Coffee FundraiserSOMA02/11/201902/21/2019I would place a bulk order for coffee once the fundraiser ends and then the coffee would be shipped to LECOM. I will then distribute it to students who have purchased. Forty two percent of the proceeds will go to us. Then half of the money can be donated to Love and Hope Children's Home in El Salvador via their website to help buy medication for the children there. The other half will go to Dr. Mendez, an infectious disease physician, at the San Rafael Hospital in San Salvador. She will use the money to buy baby formula for HIV positive mothers and toward installing indoor plumbing for them.
December 6, 2022 at 9:53 AMApprovedSAAO Forums Spring 2023SAAO12/06/202201/10/2023I would like to request SAAO forums for every Tuesday night during the 2023 Spring semester. We will meet every other Tuesday, but having all Tuesdays reserved will let us make changes in the our schedule depending on the practical schedule. Students will have the opportunity to practice and ask any questions they may have before the practicals that will be occurring the following day, Wednesdays, in class lab. Both will take place in the OPP lab at the LECOM-ERIE main building. The MS1 forum will take place from 5:30-6:30pm. The MS2 forum will follow from 6:30-7:30 pm. All in attendance are required to be SAAO members and have their local and national dues paid.
