March 9, 2025 at 8:09 PMApprovedInternational Trauma and Life Support Training CertificationACOS-MSS03/09/202507/31/2025LECOM ACOS-MSS is excited to provide members an opportunity to obtain an International Trauma Life Support Certification. Dr. Risavi will be leading the event which will consist of several lectures as well as hands-on skills stations with a practical assessment at the end. This is an opportunity for members to obtain hands-on experience and to learn new skills that are essential for any specialty. The training covers vitals trauma skills such as trauma assessment, neck and spine stabilization, and airway stabilization. Additionally, this certification is similar to a certification that is required during Emergency Medicine and General Surgery residency (advanced trauma life support), allowing members to gain valuable knowledge on information for the future. This certification and skillset will contribute to developing students into well-rounded physicians and add to their unique resume during residency interviews. This will be an amazing opportunity to allow students to gain hands-on experience and knowledge, while also being able to obtain a certification. The ITLS certification will last all members 3 years. Members who decide to participate will need to purchase and read ITLS for Emergency Care Providers – 9th edition from VitalSource or Amazon. Additionally, the certification itself will cost approximately $30. The anticipated event will be held on the following dates and times: July 31st: 530pm - 10pm August 1st: 7:30am - 5pm August 2nd: 7:30am - 3pm As there are multiple skills stations and lectures, we are requesting lecture hall A in addition to the OPP lab to be reserved on the second floor. We will work with Dr. Kalmey’s office to ensure that the training does not overlap with the MS1 orientation. Our advisor, Dr. Risavi will be present. There will also be several other clinicians to assist Dr. Risavi with the event and help administer the practicals. We are capping the participation at 25 students to allow for a meaningful experience for all. Furthermore, here are the COVID protocols that I ensure are upheld at all ACOS events: 1.) We will have a full roster of every individual who attends the event. 2.) We will create a screening form for all members that sign up and require that they disclose any signs and symptoms, travel history, and close contact history prior to attending. 3.) We will abide by LECOMs current mask policy at the time of the event.

August 9, 2022 at 6:22 PMApprovedEssential Items Drive for USCRI ErieClass of 202508/09/202209/19/2022International Institute of Erie/ USCRI (517 E 26th St, Erie, PA 16504. Phone number 814-452-3935) Since 1980, 8,839 newcomers have been resettled in the Erie area with assistance from USCRI. Refugees resettled in Erie come primarily from Bhutan, Eritrea, Somalia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Syria, Iraq, Ukraine and Russia. Newly arrived refugees receive a comprehensive set of services including housing placement, cultural orientation, school enrollment, coordination of initial health appointments, and employment preparation and placement. I have reached out to Gretchen Fairly, Development Associate at USCRI and she said she would love to receive new or gently used donations to ensure that each refugee is provided with basic items that are essential to daily life. Some essential items she listed were first aid kits, thermometers, masks, diapers, and baby products. I have attached a full list of needed items to this form. I would love to have a donation box outside the security office where students could drop off essential items! Every item donated will count for 0.5 volunteer hours and students can receive up to a maximum of 3 volunteer hours. I would like to have the drive from September 19th - 28th to ensure enough time for students to get the essential items. The Class of 2025 student council board will collect all donated items and deliver them to the USCRI at a later date.
October 19, 2018 at 3:37 PMApprovedYMCA Blood Pressure ScreeningInternal Medicine Club11/11/201811/11/2018Internal Medicine Club would like to host a blood pressure screening event with YMCA Glenwood on 11/11/2018 from 10AM to 12PM. As future primary care physicians, blood pressure is one of the most crucial vital signs to monitor. Blood pressure is one of the most important screenings because high blood pressure usually has no symptoms so it can’t be detected without being measured. High blood pressure greatly increases your risk of heart disease and stroke. If your blood pressure is below 120/80 mm Hg, be sure to get it checked at least once every two years, starting at age 20. If your blood pressure is higher, your doctor may want to check it more often. High blood pressure can be controlled through lifestyle changes and/or medication. Internal Medicine Club hopes to host monthly blood pressure screenings in order to bring awareness and promote preventative health screenings under the help of LECOM students.
