The book is titled "A Black Man in a White Coat" written by Dr. Damon Tweedy. Dr. Tweedy is a psychiatrist and associate professor of psychiatry at Duke. In his memoir, he highlights the effects of health disparities in medicine from a student, physician, and patient perspective. The purpose of these sessions is to gain a better grasp on equality in medicine and the importance of reforms in public health. It is intended to be a session where members can learn from others' experiences and get a taste of other aspects of medicine that are not as well represented in textbooks.August 26, 2025 at 4:12 PMApprovedWellness WalkDO2 Max Club08/26/202509/26/2025On September 26 at 6pm, we will be conducting a wellness walk in collaboration with the Mental Health Task Force. The organizers of the event are calling for as many volunteers as possible to help with "set-up, clean-up, registration, water stops, Promise Garden and so much more" for their upcoming event (Walk to End Alz website). I think this would be a great opportunity for the members of the NeuroPsych club to give back to the community and engage in a population of folks we are sure to encounter as future Neurologists/Psychiatrists. Also, as a LECOM health sponsored event it would be a pleasure to show our bright smiling faces to the people of Erie. The site coordinator and contact for the Walk to End Alz is as follows: Sr. Director of Development, Sara Giammarise | 814-636-6390 | sgiammarise@alz.org As far as COVID mitigation is concerned, this is an outdoor event and we will practice social distancing as much as possible. I will make sure the club provides hand sanitizer for at least our members if none is already available on-site.August 12, 2022 at 2:58 PMApprovedAddiction in Medicine DiscussionSOMA08/12/202210/18/2022On October 18th, SOMA would like to host an informational session about Addiction Medicine. This event will be given via Zoom by Dr. Elizabeth Zona. She is an addiction medicine specialist who was recommended to us by one of our MMS students! Some example topics that will be covered are: -her background and why she chose to pursue Addiction Med -current fellowship programs available and their general curriculum -the Neurobiology of Addiction -her average work day -potential practice options (inpatient vs outpatient models). Given that one of SOMA's pillars is to educate on opioid use and addiction in general, we thought this would be a good topic to have a presentation on! We will send out a sign up sheet, Zoom link, and form to submit questions for Dr. Zona as soon as this event is approved. The event will be via Zoom on 10/18 (already checked and coordinated with MMS, MS1, and MS2 exam schedules) from 6-7:30PM. Dr. Thielman and Dr. Lee have already consulted and agreed to this event.October 4, 2023 at 5:15 PMApprovedBlaze Pizza FundraiserPathology Club10/04/202311/14/2023On November 14th, 2023 from 4:00PM to 8:00PM, Pathology Club would like to hold a fundraiser through Blaze Pizza located at 1930 Douglas Pkwy, Erie, PA 16509. 20% of total order proceeds, from both online and in-store orders (not delivery), will go directly to the club. Dr. Stillman received her medical degree and Master of Health Services Administration from LECOM and completed her residency at Millcreek Community Hospital. She is an adjunct clinical assistant professor at LECOM and an attending physician at MCH, working closely with resident physicians in psychiatry. Dr. Stillman currently works through LECOM at: -Millcreek Community Hospital -LECOM Institute for Behavioral Health -Barber Forensic -Erie Homes for Children and Adults -LECOM's 8 long-term care facilities (assisted living, skilled nursing, and secure memory care) -LECOM's Medical Cannabis Research for Generalized Anxiety and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Because of her history as a LECOM alumni and her current work experience in multiple aspects of psychiatry, Dr. Stillman is the ideal speaker as the first year medical students transition into summer. A conversation with her would give students food for thought on how they should invest in their clinical careers in the following months and beyond. Prior to the event we will open up a google document so students can pose questions for Dr. Belinda Stillman D.O. to answer. The event will be hosted over Zoom, with a link to the meeting emailed a week in advance.
