September 26, 2022 at 1:52 PMApprovedDecompression Session: Painting and a Discussion on Barriers to Mental Health CareMental Health Task Force09/26/202210/27/2022This will be a painting session with a discussion on barriers to mental health care hosted by the SGA Mental Health Task Force that seeks to act as a place to decompress and engage in a hobby as stress relief practice, as well as a space to discuss mental health in medical students. Dr. Melanie Dunbar will be present for the duration of the meeting as a facilitator along with the members of the mental health task force. We know that medical students are more likely to live with depression, anxiety, and mood disorders (Maser et al., 2019), and that having discussions about our experiences works to destigmatize and reduce stress around seeking treatment (Hankier et al., 2014). An additional reason to have the coinciding painting session will give students a physical activity to focus on to make students feel more comfortable contributing to the discussion and sitting through silent periods. We will discuss different barriers that one might encounter to seeking mental health care, including cultural, geographical, financial, and other societal barriers. We will discuss stigma around mental health illness and treatments, including medications, and ways we can work to break down those stigmas. This will not be a therapy session, it will be a discussion on the difficulties medical students face and the associated stigma and barriers to mental health care. It will also be a place to remind students of the resources and support that they have available to them. This session will be held October 27th at 6pm in the Vora lounge. An RSVP form will be created to determine how many materials to purchase for the event. Materials will be purchased in bulk off Amazon, and unused materials will be saved for a future Goody bag event. Plastic tablecloths will be purchased to protect the tables, the paint will be washable for easy removal, and cleaning materials will be purchased to ensure that the lounge is left spotless after our session. Cleaning up will be done by the members of the Mental Health Task Force, and leftover materials will be added to SGA storage for continued use. “Relative to the general population of postsecondary graduates aged 20–34, medical students aged 20–34 had significantly higher rates of diagnosed mood disorders, diagnosed anxiety disorders, suicidal ideation, and psychological distress.” Maser, Brandon MD; Danilewitz, Marlon MD; Guérin, Eva PhD; Findlay, Leanne PhD; Frank, Erica MD, MPH. March 23, 2022 at 12:10 PMRejectedWeight Stigma and Mental HealthMental Health Task Force03/23/202204/13/2021This will be a MHTF-guided discussion on the impact of weight stigma on mental health and health outcomes. We will discuss how weight stigma in medicine has affected our relationship with medical practitioners and could affect our future patients. Using examples from medical and public health literature, we’ll examine our view of obesity as an epidemic and as a measure of mortality risk, and how that has influenced medical perspectives on weight. We will also discuss the genetic and socioeconomic components of weight, and how those might be barriers to thinness. Finally, we will also brainstorm together how we, as future physicians, can help address weight stigma in our practice, such as asking permission to discuss weight and trusting patients to know their own bodies. Those who participate actively will get a $10 gift card, as this event will be in lieu of the monthly breakfast.

We will discuss how fatphobia has impacted us personally and continues to be present in our medical journey, and how that has affected our relationship with medical practitioners and could affect our future patients. April 20, 2023 at 2:33 PMExpiredAMMSA-LECOM: Eid CelebrationAMMSA04/20/202304/28/2023This was an already approved event. We decided to go forward with a guest speaker for our event and change the location. The guest speaker is Dr. Salman Muazzam Muddassir, the program director for the Internal Medicine Residency Program from Oak Hill Hospital, Brooksville, FL. He will be joining us through Zoom to provide us with some words on Islam in Medicine. His contact information and CV are attached to this request and the new location is updated. During the Islamic month called Ramadan, Muslims fast from dawn to sunset for 30 days and end with a celebration called Eid ul Fitr. We would like to host this celebration on April 28th at 7:00 PM at the Hammocks at Millcreek (4554 Hammocks Dr, Erie, PA 16506). We will be catering food from an outside vendor for dinner and are planning on charging $10 per person to help cover some of the expenses, and would like to use our budget to cover the remaining expenses. Educational purpose: Educate the campus about Eid traditions, celebrate an important Muslim holiday, and help diversify the community COVID mitigation plan: The event will take place in a space big enough for people to be spread out and mask enforcement will be followed based on the COVID case numbers. Vendor choices: As-Salam, Cleveland Grocers, Desi Khabba, or Paradise Biryani Pointe (we have not decided on a restaurant yet but these are our options)

February 11, 2019 at 4:10 PMRejectedBlaze Pizza FundraiserSOMA02/11/201902/25/2019This is the second fundraiser I wanted to organize for my health disparities coordinator position. The first one is the Jo Coffee fundraiser. Since we are raising money for 2 organizations, I thought 2 fundraiser events would raise enough money to donate to both. This one is simple. Students simply show up to Blaze Pizza and show them the flyer for our fundraiser and then Blaze will send a check back to us to donate to our causes. We will receive 20% of the sales profit. Then half of the money can be donated to Love and Hope Children's Home in El Salvador via their website to help buy medication for the children there. The other half will go to Dr. Mendez, an infectious disease physician, at the San Rafael Hospital in San Salvador. She will use the money to buy baby formula for HIV positive mothers and toward installing indoor plumbing for them.

February 27, 2019 at 4:39 PMCancelledJaci SummersSOMA02/27/201903/07/2019This is a follow up proposal for my International Health Disparities project which I've been elected to complete for SOMA class of 2021. I'd like to nominate our support for International Rescue Committee. This organization is very well known and has been around for quite some time. They are based out of New York and they have received 4 stars from Charity Navigator. Their primary goal is to respond to humanitarian crises all over the world as well as in the U.S, including bringing primary care to refugees and at risk populations. Here is the website if you would like further information: https://www.rescue.org/what-we-do. This organization spends 89% of its budget on programs, which mean the majority of our funds raised for them will go to helping people in need. I would still like to use the coffee fundraiser as mentioned before from Jo Coffee, since we will be getting 42% of sales toward our fundraiser. Other fundraisers I've looked into do not offer this much turn around on sales. Once the orders are finished being placed, I would submit the order and then the coffee would be delivered to LECOM for me to distribute to students who have purchased. Then once LECOM has recieved the fundraiser check from the coffee company we can easily make the payment to IRC online. Please let me know if there is anything I can clarify and I welcome any feedback on this project. Thank you for considering my request.
