We will discuss how weight stigma in medicine has affected our relationship with medical practitioners and could affect our future patients. Using examples from medical and public health literature, we’ll examine our view of obesity as an epidemic and as a measure of mortality risk, and how that has influenced medical perspectives on weight. We will also discuss the genetic and socioeconomic components of weight, and how those might be barriers to thinness. Finally, we will also brainstorm together how we, as future physicians, can help address weight stigma in our practice, such as asking permission to discuss weight and trusting patients to know their own bodies. Those who participate actively will get a $10 gift card, as this event will be in lieu of the monthly breakfast.March 23, 2022 at 1:18 PMApprovedPediatrics Club Virtual Speaker Event with Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh Pediatric AnesthesiologistPediatrics Club03/23/202204/05/2022Pediatrics Club will be hosting virtual guest speakers with Dr. Koha Nguyen (Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh), and Dr. Philip Adams and Dr. Paul Hoffmann (UPMC).March 22, 2022 at 12:15 PMApprovedSAACOFP Recruitment Meet and GreetFamily Medicine Club03/22/202203/28/2022The goal of this event is to promote SAACOFP to students and recruit new members. This will be a virtual event through Zoom from 6-7PM EST in which Dr. Morgan will share his experience navigating addiction in the past and his path of recovery. He will share how to understand the signs and symptoms of addiction in health care professionals, and he will make us more aware of the ongoing opioid epidemic. Why: One of the pillars of SOMA’s overdose prevention task force is harm reduction. Harm reduction is a public health tactic that is used to reduce the consequences of drug misuse and overdose. Dr. Morgan will identify these consequences as they relate to opioid use, and how we, as medical students, can take action to fight the growing opioid epidemic in the United States. It will also allow students to ask any questions that they may have regarding this issue.March 13, 2022 at 7:35 PMCancelledFatphobia in MedicineMental Health Task Force03/13/202204/13/2022This will be a MHTF-guided discussion on the impact of weight stigma in medicine and the mental health consequences of that stigma on patients and their health outcomes. We will discuss how fatphobia has impacted us personally and continues to be present in our medical journey, and how that has affected our relationship with medical practitioners and could affect our future patients. Using examples from medical and public health literature, we’ll examine our view of obesity as an epidemic and as a measure of mortality risk, and how that has influenced medical perspectives on weight. We will also discuss the genetic and socioeconomic components of weight, and how those might be barriers to thinness. Basic neuroscience is notoriously one of the most difficult classes in medical school, and our Eboard feels it would be extremely beneficial to start hosting review sessions. These sessions will be over Zoom starting whenever the event is approved. We will have a sign up sheet for MS1 and MS2 Students to sign up to make review Powerpoints for basic neuroanatomy in exchange for community service hours. Making the presentations will be available to SSP and SOMA members, and the review nights will only be open to SOMA students. We hope this will bridge the gap that MS1's have had with transitioning into more difficult content and systems.March 9, 2022 at 12:55 PMApprovedCharity Miles FundraiserChristian Medical and Dental Association03/09/202204/01/2022We (CMDA) are working together with Radiology Club to hold a fundraiser through the free app called Charity Miles. We are going to make a team on the app that anyone in LECOM (students and faculty) can join. Then on April 1st, we are going to start tracking everyone’s miles on the team. To use the free app, people will just hit “outdoor walk” or “outdoor run” (other options on the app as well) and their miles will be tracked by the app. While they walk or run, the app calculates how much money that person made while they were working out and directly sends the money to charity. The app is free to download and use, and the money is all from sponsors of the company, so there are no sponsors needed for the event. We will send out instructions on how to use the app and how to start a workout. We are also going to keep track of the miles that people walk/run and the top five participants from our school are going to get a twenty dollar gift card. Both of our clubs are going to send out a weekly update of the top five and how much money we have raised as a group. We are going to ask people to raise money for Save the Children and Unicef since they are sending relief to Ukraine, but the app has lots of amazing charities and each individual can choose which one they want to personally support. We know that we are a little late on the one month policy, so if we have to start later in April that is fine, but we are going to be holding the event for a month. Since it is just when people work out, it is a COVID safe event that can be done remotely and all through the app. We are also hoping that this will encourage our fellow students and the faculty to get out and move more in the nicer weather. We would love to answer any questions that you might have!March 9, 2022 at 3:50 PMRejectedSpanish Medical Club High School TutoringSpanish Medical Club03/09/202204/05/2022Spanish medical club would like to do tutoring.
