November 9, 2018 at 12:29 PMRejectedOverflow Shelter Foot ClinicSOMA11/09/201811/28/2018Over the past few years, LECOM SOMA has conducted a foot clinic at the overflow homeless shelters on Monday evenings between December and late March. The overflow shelter is sponsored by a local place of worship that switches locations every 2 weeks. These shelters offer overnight shelter to the homeless of Erie during the winter months. The overflow shelter is run by volunteers from the sponsoring church as well as local community organizations including Community Health Net and EUMA: Healthcare for the Homeless Partnerships. The role of the volunteering LECOM student includes providing foot care to individuals. This includes washing and drying of the feet, pulse measurements, testing for paresthesias, and identifying cuts/ bruises/ signs of infection. A H&P is taken of each individual and recorded in files that are monitored by Faith Community Nurse, Barbara Lewis, who uses the information for podiatrist and physician follow-ups. Additionally, other nurses are on staff during the entire duration of the foot clinic for consultation by the medical student. Not only are the medical students providing care to the individual, but they are also conveying a fresh, empathetic perception of the healthcare system (as most of these individuals have been burnt by the system). A training session will be held on Wednesday, November 28th at 6:30pm. Students will be introduced to the community and specific problems faced by the homeless population and what is expected of them at the foot clinic. Attendance at this training is required for participation. The first foot clinic will be held on December 3rd and the event runs from 7-9:30pm. The last scheduled date is March 25. A group of 3-4 students (plus myself or Alanna Grafius: Local Healthcare Disparities Coordinators) will volunteer two Mondays in a row followed by a new group of students.November 8, 2018 at 1:42 PMApprovedSamantha FridayLECOM SGA - Medicine - Erie11/08/201812/03/2018SGA will be hosting an event in the LECOM atrium to offer an opportunity for the students and student club executive boards to celebrate the successes in each of the individual clubs. As future primary care physicians, blood pressure is one of the most crucial vital signs to monitor. Blood pressure is one of the most important screenings because high blood pressure usually has no symptoms so it can’t be detected without being measured. High blood pressure greatly increases your risk of heart disease and stroke. If your blood pressure is below 120/80 mm Hg, be sure to get it checked at least once every two years, starting at age 20. If your blood pressure is higher, your doctor may want to check it more often. High blood pressure can be controlled through lifestyle changes and/or medication. Internal Medicine Club hopes to host monthly blood pressure screenings in order to bring awareness and promote preventative health screenings under the help of LECOM students.October 17, 2018 at 12:38 PMApprovedFall Doughnut & Apple Cider SaleSAAO10/17/201811/07/2018As a fall fundraiser, the Student American Academy of Osteopathy (SAAO) would like to sell fresh apple cider doughnuts ($1 each) and apple cider ($1 per cup) in the cafeteria on 11/7 during lunch.
