We will be joined by our speaker Kyabeth Torres-Rodriguez, a PhD candidate at the University of Pennsylvania, who will present her research on “The role of the MYCN oncogene in inducing immune evasion in neuroblastoma.” Academic Purpose: With the ever-changing advancements in scientific research, it's important as medical students to stay engaged in developing research topics; however, many may feel overwhelmed by the complexity of cancer research. We hope to give our student body an opportunity to explore a particular research topic and aim to spark interest in cancer research as a whole.

She did her medical school at Al-Ameen Medical College, residency at Austin State Hospital, and completed a Child and Adolescent fellowship from Northwestern University in Chicago, IL. With over 15 years of experience as a privately practicing physician she brings valuable insight for students interested in psychiatry in general and the ins and outs of running your own practice. During the event, Dr. Jafry will answer questions asked by students and provide her understanding on what we as students can see as the “light at the end of the tunnel”. Prior to the event we will open up a google document so students can pose questions for Dr. Jafry to answer. Also, as part of our COVID mitigation strategy we will be hosting the event over Zoom.

Plan is to reserve the LECOM Wellness Center basketball gym and have a a tournament style bracket for players (4v4). Teams would pay as well as individuals can have individual donations. All proceeds will go to the American Diabetes Association.

We plan on sending out an order form on August 3, 2024 and sending the order to My Custom T-shirt (an Erie based company) on August 24, 2024 and receive the shirts on September 24, 2024 and distribute them in the cafeteria during that time before October. We plan on selling the shirts for $15/shirt (price subject to change regarding the cost of manufacturing)and having payment through Venmo, then we would write a check to the T-shirt company and Erie Cancer Wellness. I have already been in touch with the Erie Cancer Wellness Center regarding how to donate the money.
August 29, 2020 at 5:15 PMApprovedBreast Cancer Awareness Pin Sale.Oncology Club08/29/202009/08/2020Oncology Club will be taking orders for Breast Cancer Awareness Pins prior to Breast Cancer Awareness Month (October), then distributing pins contactlessly by mail. We will begin taking orders as soon as approval is granted until mid-September. We will then order pins, and distribute them by mail once shipped. The pins will be sold for $5 each, with an expected profit of 30 cents per pin for Oncology Club. We do not expect to gain much money from this; the point is raising awareness. As such, we will include a small breast cancer fact/prevention/screening sheet with each pin in the package.

This is a great opportunity to practice your BP taking skills and to encourage patients to do routine health monitoring, as a way to prevent hypertension! Furthermore, it is crucial to develop good people skills. Per LECOM guidelines, this event will only be open to fully vaccinated individuals. Please bring your own BP cuff and stethoscope. Dress code is scrubs or professional attire (if you do not own scrubs). Logo use is needed on the flyers made by the Glenwood YMCA to advertise this event. With the current state of the club, the books & boards have not been replenished or updated since 2021. The kids go to their local Kids Club library to check out books, and play with the board games whenever they complete homework in the club. The children coming to the Kids Club live in the Erie Heights complex, a Section 8 housing community. The kids coming to the club range from 5 to 15 years old. Mentoring Club would like to collect books & board games to donate to the club for the upcoming spring & summer for the club. Each item will amount to .5 volunteer hours, with a maximum of 2 hours for 4 items. This event will be co-run with the new e-board, in order to assist with their transition as the new Mentoring Club e-board.

Pathology Club and Radiology Club will be selling Boo-Grams gift bags including candy and squishy skeletons that you can send to your friends (or yourself)! Order forms will be sent out, and the recipient will receive an email telling them they have been boo-ed and to pick up their boo-grams. Orders will be accepted via google form from 10/22/24 to 10/28/24 at noon! Pick up times will be on 10/29, 10/30, and 10/31 from 11:30-12:20! Each bag is $4 and they will include candy, fruit snacks, anatomy-themed stickers, and squishy skeletons!

LECOM APAMSA x CMDAAPAMSA03/20/202604/29/2026APAMSA and CMDA are hosting a bubble tea and fruit tea fundraiser with products from the local boba shop, Tsaocaa. This is a great opportunity for LECOM students to explore popular drinks from a different culture while also helping APAMSA and CMDA to raise funds for future events and keep membership costs at $0. This is also a great opportunity to help support an Asian-run business in the area. LECOM students will be able to order and customize their food and drink based on the attached Google Form. Students must order via the form for delivery onto campus. APAMSA board members available that morning will bring the order from the shop to campus. The orders will be available for pickup on Wednesday, April 29th from 11:30 AM to 12:30 PM, with setup 11:00 AM-11:30 AM and double-checking for any leftovers 12:30 PM-12:45 PM. This will be right before the rotations update (MS1s) and neuro reviews (MS2s). This date and time was selected to maximize sales and streamline distribution. MS1s are required to go to the rotations update later that day, and MS2s can relax after their one-liner exams and refresh before their neuro review afterwards.
March 12, 2025 at 10:12 AMApprovedBLS CertificationEmergency Medicine03/12/202504/12/2025We would like to give our members the opportunity to participate in a Basic Life Support (BLS) Training Course run by Dr. Risavi and other certified instructors. This event will be held on Saturday, April 12, from 8:00 AM – 12:00 PM and will provide students with both skills practice and skills testing required for BLS certification. The American Heart Association (AHA) BLS Course is designed to equip healthcare providers with the essential skills needed to recognize and respond to life-threatening emergencies. Training will cover high-quality CPR for adults, children, and infants, the use of an automated external defibrillator (AED), effective ventilations with a barrier device, relief of choking in responsive and unresponsive victims, and the importance of early recognition and intervention in cardiac arrest situations. Following the hands-on practice session, students will complete the skills testing component necessary for certification. Upon successful completion of the course, participants will receive their AHA BLS Provider e-card certification via email. All necessary equipment for training will be provided by Dr. Risavi. An excel sign-up sheet will be available for students to register, with a maximum of 25 participants allowed. Students will adhere to current LECOM COVID regulations throughout the event. This is an excellent opportunity to develop life-saving skills, interact with fellow students, and gain an essential certification for clinical rotations and future medical practice. We encourage all interested students to sign up and take advantage of this valuable training experience!
