September 26, 2022 at 1:52 PMApprovedDecompression Session: Painting and a Discussion on Barriers to Mental Health CareMental Health Task Force09/26/202210/27/2022This will be a painting session with a discussion on barriers to mental health care hosted by the SGA Mental Health Task Force that seeks to act as a place to decompress and engage in a hobby as stress relief practice, as well as a space to discuss mental health in medical students. Dr. Melanie Dunbar will be present for the duration of the meeting as a facilitator along with the members of the mental health task force. We know that medical students are more likely to live with depression, anxiety, and mood disorders (Maser et al., 2019), and that having discussions about our experiences works to destigmatize and reduce stress around seeking treatment (Hankier et al., 2014). An additional reason to have the coinciding painting session will give students a physical activity to focus on to make students feel more comfortable contributing to the discussion and sitting through silent periods. We will discuss different barriers that one might encounter to seeking mental health care, including cultural, geographical, financial, and other societal barriers. We will discuss stigma around mental health illness and treatments, including medications, and ways we can work to break down those stigmas. This will not be a therapy session, it will be a discussion on the difficulties medical students face and the associated stigma and barriers to mental health care. It will also be a place to remind students of the resources and support that they have available to them. This session will be held October 27th at 6pm in the Vora lounge. An RSVP form will be created to determine how many materials to purchase for the event. Materials will be purchased in bulk off Amazon, and unused materials will be saved for a future Goody bag event. Plastic tablecloths will be purchased to protect the tables, the paint will be washable for easy removal, and cleaning materials will be purchased to ensure that the lounge is left spotless after our session. David James Seastone, DO, PhD, is a medical oncologist and treats all medical oncology and hematology cases. Dr. Seastone is board-certified in internal medicine and medical oncology. He received his PhD degree from Louisiana State University Health Sciences in Shreveport, Louisiana, and his doctorate of osteopathic medicine from Lake Erie College in Erie, Pennsylvania. Dr. Seastone completed a residency in internal medicine at Cleveland Clinic and a fellowship in hematology/oncology at Cleveland Clinic Tausig Cancer Institute. Dr. Seastone is a member of the American Society for Hematology, American Society for Clinical Oncology, American Osteopathic Association, and American Medical Association. Dr. Amrita Chakraborty, MD is a palliative medicine attending at St. Vincent Hospital in Erie, PA. She is a graduate from St. George's University in 2013.

The CEO of Voices for Independence (VFI), Shona Eakins, will come and give a presentation about has as future providers we can provide care that is accessible to people with all ranges of abilities. Three nurses who work at VFI will attend the event with her to demonstrate how to use a hoyer lift to transport people with physical diabilities. All in all, this event will be a way for students to learn about how to better care for this population of people.
September 30, 2024 at 7:59 PMApprovedCustom FIGS scrubs saleLECOM Med Erie - SGA09/30/202411/01/2024LECOM SGA would like to host a figs scrubs sale where students can customize their name on the scrubs as well as the LECOM logo. This will be beneficial to students so they can wear figs scrubs on their rotations and also to lab if required. The offered scrubs colors are navy blue and ceil blue (both colors attached). The scrubs will have the LECOM logo that is already provided by Mr. Bresee and will be white. The scrub sale will start 11/1/2024 and will continue for a month. Orders will take place through a google form that automatically tracks orders. Payment will be made via Zelle to the LECOM SGA account. LECOM SGA will be able to make a profit because there is a 15% discount for bulk orders over 10. Scrubs will be passed out to students in the Vora Lounge the first week back to school after winter break during lunch period (11:30am-1pm) on Wednesday and Friday (1/8/25, 1/10/25).

The event will be on Tuesday, January 20 at 5:30 PM for an engaging discussion on the importance of cultural competency in healthcare, as our speakers share real-world experiences and insights from their clinical practice. The evening will wrap up with a 15-minute Q&A session, giving students the chance to ask questions and connect directly with our panelists.

January 11, 2026 at 8:54 AMApprovedCrafts & ConnectMental Health Task Force01/11/202602/11/2026The Mental Health Task Force is requesting approval to host Crafts & Connect on February 11th in the LECOM cafeteria from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm. We are requesting permission to use the nine tables located on the far left side of the cafeteria. We plan to provide pizza and juice for attendees, as the event will take place during evening hours and offering food helps ensure students are able to eat during an otherwise busy academic week. A signup sheet will be used for students to register for the event, which will be open to 1st- and 2nd-year LECOM medical students on a first-come, first-served basis with a maximum capacity of 40 students. Crafts & Connect is intended to provide students with a relaxed and welcoming environment to decompress, connect with peers, and engage in creative activities such as coloring, general arts and crafts, and a decorate-your-Anki-remote station, where students may create a keychain or personalize their Anki remote. This event aims to promote mental wellness, creativity, and social connection during a busy academic period. Dr. Awale has agreed to be present for the entirety of the event to provide faculty supervision and ensure appropriate oversight.
February 19, 2026 at 11:39 AMApprovedCPR Certification CourseEmergency Medicine02/19/202603/18/2026We would like to give our members the opportunity to participate in a CPR certification class run by Dr. Risavi. This event will be held on a Wednesday evening to train EM members on how to perform CPR with proper technique and efficacy. At the event, Dr. Risavi will give a presentation and show videos to discuss the importance of, and demonstrate, high-quality CPR. Then, there will be a hands-on learning opportunity for students to practice and be assessed on techniques. Upon successful completion of the course, Dr. Risavi will issue students a CPR license from the National CPR Foundation. It will give our members the chance to interact with one another while earning a valuable certification. All equipment and mannequins for the interactive activity will be provided by Dr. Risavi. An email with an Excel sign-up sheet will be sent to Emergency Medicine Club members, with a maximum of 25 students allowed to sign up. Students will adhere to all current regulations set by LECOM. Our club advisor, Dr. Risavi, has approved the event and will be in attendance. This event will be held on Wednesday, March 18th, in the OPP Lab from 6 pm to 8 pm.
