February 27, 2019 at 4:39 PMCancelledJaci SummersSOMA02/27/201903/07/2019This is a follow up proposal for my International Health Disparities project which I've been elected to complete for SOMA class of 2021. I'd like to nominate our support for International Rescue Committee. This organization is very well known and has been around for quite some time. They are based out of New York and they have received 4 stars from Charity Navigator. Their primary goal is to respond to humanitarian crises all over the world as well as in the U.S, including bringing primary care to refugees and at risk populations. Here is the website if you would like further information: https://www.rescue.org/what-we-do. This organization spends 89% of its budget on programs, which mean the majority of our funds raised for them will go to helping people in need. I would still like to use the coffee fundraiser as mentioned before from Jo Coffee, since we will be getting 42% of sales toward our fundraiser. Other fundraisers I've looked into do not offer this much turn around on sales. Once the orders are finished being placed, I would submit the order and then the coffee would be delivered to LECOM for me to distribute to students who have purchased. Then once LECOM has recieved the fundraiser check from the coffee company we can easily make the payment to IRC online. Please let me know if there is anything I can clarify and I welcome any feedback on this project. Thank you for considering my request.

Dr. Risavi would like to come in on a Saturday to talk to EM club members about respiratory emergencies and intubation as an important clinical skill. There will be a presentation to discuss the importance of airway management, and to familiarize students with protocols and techniques. There will then be a hands-on learning opportunity for students to participate in practicing intubation techniques. It will give our members the chance to interact with one another while learning valuable skills they will learn more about on rotations. All equipment for the interactive activity will be provided by Dr. Risavi. A sign-up sheet will be provided for students to participate with a maximum of 30 students allowed to sign-up. Students will adhere to current COVID Regulations set by LECOM. Our Club Advisor, Dr. Risavi, has approved of the event and will be in attendance. This event will be held on Saturday November 11th in Pharmacy Lecture Hall A and the OPP Lab from 8:00am – 4:00pm.

December 12, 2018 at 11:16 AMCancelledHomeless Shelter Overflow Foot ClinicSOMA12/11/201801/14/2019LECOM SOMA would like to continue participating in the foot care clinic at the Homeless Shelter Overflow sponsored by Erie United Methodist Alliance. The care and education offered by medical students to this population offers invaluable experience and opportunity to practice our osteopathic values. The Homeless Shelter Overflow was developed in response to the growing homeless population in Erie and the limited resources for shelter during the harsh winter months. The program runs from late November through late March. The overflow is sponsored by a local place of worship for 2 weeks and then switches to another participating location. The overflow shelter is staffed by volunteers from the parishes as well as from community organizations in Erie. The "guests" (homeless) staying at the shelter are housed for the night until 7 am the next morning. The guests have access to showers, personal care products, and a cot. Additionally, they have access to health resources (faith community nurses through Erie United Methodist Alliance: Healthcare for the Homeless Partnerships) and other local organizations such as Community Health Net. Barbara Lewis, RN, is a Faith Community Nurse and director of EUMA Healthcare for the Homeless. She has been instrumental in implementing the healthcare advocacy at the overflow clinic. She has created a strong relationship with both LECOM SOMA and Bridging the Gaps to initiate programs allowing LECOM students to work with underserved populations. Barbara can be contacted at blewis@euma-erie.org or 814-806-5253. She is very enthusiastic about this partnership with LECOM SOMA and requested to share her contact information to anyone whom may have questions regarding this program. The Homeless Shelter Overflow Foot Clinic was started by medical student Sarah Edwards under the direction of Professor, Dr. Sarah McCarthy. The foot clinic is an adjunct to the overflow shelter, allowing medical students to have the opportunity to interact with homeless individuals as well as provide one-on-one healthcare. The foot clinic is scheduled for every Monday evening from approximately 6-9 pm. The first Monday we would potentially look to start is January 14, and the last scheduled date is March 25. The schedule of the dates and locations of each overflow shelter are included in the attachment. Alanna and Angela are hoping LECOM SOMA can continue working with EUMA and the Homeless Shelter Overflow. We would like to continue practicing our best safety practices while being overseen by Barbara during our time at the clinic. Three students will be scheduled at each foot clinic along with a faculty advisor and at least one of the SOMA Local Healthcare Disparities Coordinators (the role that Angela and Alanna hold currently). The students will meet in the LECOM main campus parking lot and commute to the overflow shelter location together. The interaction between the medical student and the guest of the shelter includes taking a history of the patient, documenting it in their chart, testing pedal pulses, examining the feet for signs of infection/open sores. Students also clean their feet with gloves and antiseptic wash while also offering the patient clean, dry socks. Throughout the process, volunteers are educating the patients on when to visit a doctor and the importance of diabetic foot care. The information from the session is used by the Faith Community Nurses as well as a rotating podiatrist who attends the overflow shelter on selected weeks to follow up with the guests. Medical students are required to attend a training session prior to attending foot clinic where they are trained on the homeless community, how to provide foot care, how to document the patient history, and relevant health topics to discuss with the guest. We hope to conduct this session the first week of the spring semester, the week of Jan 7-11. We would like to use the 2nd floor, main conference room. Foot care is a very important aspect in this population as their main form of transportation is on foot, often through the snow with improper foot wear. Many of these individuals also do not have access to soap, running water, or dry towels. Some of these individuals are unable to bend forward and reach their feet. Not only is the medical student providing care and delivering knowledge to the homeless individual, but they are also rebuilding a relationship with the healthcare system. Many of these individuals have been mistreated by healthcare practitioners due to stereotypes and a misunderstanding of the unique needs associated with serving this population. Additionally, this experience will also provide medical students with the opportunity to work with an underserved population and further develop a sense of empathy and understanding aligning with the osteopathic profession.

Cards will be made by students to bring joy to residents, so these cards will include writing from students. Students will make or fill out cards to be distributed to SLC Residents. This will be a contactless event, and we propose having collection boxes near the security doors. Students will be able to leave their cards for collection. Cards will be picked up at the end of the drive by Paarth Sharma or Co-Chair Smaran Teru. We will advertise this event to the entire Class of 2025 and class of 2026, so they are able to participate. Cards should be dropped off at the security office or at Colleen's desk on the second floor. This will be done in a contact-free manner. As has been done in other clubs, service hours will be provided with 3 cards = 1 hour of service. Cards will be dropped off at the LECOM Living Center - coordinated with Emily Carver - ecarver@lecomslc.org. Why: SOMA wants to create a COVID-safe opportunity for students to get involved in the Erie community. Having this card drive creates an event that allows LECOM students to reach out and be involved with the school and community. As this event has been very successful in the past, and Dr. Silvia Ferretti commented on what a nice event it was last year when we had the cards at Colleen’s desk, we really would like the opportunity to have it again. Here is the request for the drive that was approved last year: Idea: SOMA will be putting together a Holiday Card drive. This will be a contactless event, and we propose having collection boxes at the entrance to Main Campus. Students will be able to leave the cards for collection. Items will be picked up at the end of the drive by myself (Ellie Schommer) or Co-Chair Garrett Kettle. We will advertise this event to the entire Class of 2024 and class of 2025 so they are able to participate. At the conclusion of the drive, I will arrange a date and time to drop off the supplies to St. Mary’s Senior Living Center. This will be done in a contact-free manner. Why: SOMA wants to create a COVID-safe opportunity for students to get involved in the Erie community. Having this drive creates an event for LECOM students to reach out and be involved with the Erie community. Proposed dates: Monday November 29 – Friday December 3 Alternate dates: Monday December 6 – Friday December 10 Here is the request for the same drive that was approved in the Spring for Saint Patrick’s Day: Proposed dates: Monday March 7th through March 11th Alternate dates: Monday March 14th through Wednesday March 16th Idea: SOMA will be putting together a St. Patrick’s Card Drive. This will be a contactless event, and we propose having collection boxes in the cafeteria. Students will be able to leave their cards for collection. Cards will be picked up at the end of the drive by Co-Chair Paarth Sharma or Co-Chair Smaran Teru. We will advertise this event to the entire Class of 2024 and class of 2025, so they are able to participate. At the conclusion of the card drive, we will arrange a date and time to drop off the cards to St. Mary’s Senior Center. This will be done in a contact-free manner. March 13, 2022 at 7:35 PMCancelledFatphobia in MedicineMental Health Task Force03/13/202204/13/2022This will be a MHTF-guided discussion on the impact of weight stigma in medicine and the mental health consequences of that stigma on patients and their health outcomes. We will discuss how fatphobia has impacted us personally and continues to be present in our medical journey, and how that has affected our relationship with medical practitioners and could affect our future patients. Using examples from medical and public health literature, we’ll examine our view of obesity as an epidemic and as a measure of mortality risk, and how that has influenced medical perspectives on weight. We will also discuss the genetic and socioeconomic components of weight, and how those might be barriers to thinness. Finally, we will also brainstorm together how we, as future physicians, can help address fatphobia in our practice and make patients more comfortable, such as asking permission to discuss weight and trusting patients to know their own bodies. Those who participate actively will get a $10 gift card, as this event will be in lieu of the monthly breakfast.

April 29, 2025 at 10:21 PMCancelledFaculty vs Students Kickball Tournament 2025DO2 Max Club04/29/202505/22/2025Hosting a fun and friendly kickball event for all students at LECOM. As DO2 Max has been experiencing inconsistent participation, events, and campus presence we want to use this as an opportunity to bring all of LECOM together before many of us go away for the summer, while also using it as an opportunity to increase future interest for the club again! Thus we are planning on hosting a kickball tournament against with willing faculty to lift the spirits of all participants after a long semester. If all things go accordingly, it can also be a social event where we can have food or sell t-shirts as a fundraising opportunity with everyone not participating just coming to watch the tournament and socialize! We envision this event launching the excitement needed for one of a couple event ideas we have for the upcoming academic year.

October 5, 2022 at 7:25 PMCancelledErie Otters NightClass of 202510/05/202211/05/2022We want to use our class funds to buy tickets for the Nov 5th otters game. The purpose of this event is to allow for a break from our studies and facilitate a mental health break for our students. Additionally, this would help enhance the camaraderie of the class of 2025 as we head into our final semester of didactic learning. Details: I was thinking 30 tickets based upon a current ongoing poll within the class (could be less). Once the results of the poll is finalized later this week, I will have a set interest of the number of students interested in tickets. The prospective date is Nov 5th at 7 pm. I have spoken with an Otters representative and he said: "Our ticket prices are $14 center ice, $12 west end or $10 east end." If we reserve 30 tickets the cheapest option would be $300 with the most expensive being $420. CARP plan: as this is an event during the (hopefully) low covid incidence rate in erie county, we would not have a specific COVID plan in place. However, each student will be sitting in a designated section surrounded by other lecom students to ensure that the spread of any potential diseases can be limited. Additionally, we will have an exact list of students that attended the event in case there is a need to contact them afterwards. Again, this would be an excellent way for LECOM students to get out and enjoy the many great events that Erie has to offer while also serving as a mental health escape for a few hours!
