March 14, 2022 at 11:04 AMApprovedFighting the Opioid EpidemicSOMA03/14/202204/28/2022Idea: SOMA will be hosting a talk by Dr. Richard Morgan, DO who is currently a clinical faculty instructor at the NYIT College of Osteopathic Medicine in Old Westbury, NY. This will be a virtual event through Zoom from 6-7PM EST in which Dr. Morgan will share his experience navigating addiction in the past and his path of recovery. He will share how to understand the signs and symptoms of addiction in health care professionals, and he will make us more aware of the ongoing opioid epidemic. Why: One of the pillars of SOMA’s overdose prevention task force is harm reduction. Harm reduction is a public health tactic that is used to reduce the consequences of drug misuse and overdose. Dr. Morgan will identify these consequences as they relate to opioid use, and how we, as medical students, can take action to fight the growing opioid epidemic in the United States. It will also allow students to ask any questions that they may have regarding this issue.August 14, 2025 at 8:35 PMRejectedField DayMentoring08/14/202508/27/2025We are planning a field day event at the Erie Heights Kids Club for the two kids clubs in the Erie area. The Sight Center of Northwest PA sorts through the glasses and decides which ones to keep for distribution to people in the community, then they outsource the rest of the donated glasses to other organizations such as the Lions Club international and others. I am in contact with Pam Masi from the Sight Center. Her email is pamm@sightcenternwpa.org. We will empty the bin at the end of each day to ensure it does not get too full. the intention is also to have students earn service hours for donating (1 service hour for 2 items, with a maximum of 2 hours able to be earned). After the week of collection, we will deliver the donated glasses to the Sight Center. Dr. Chris Buzas is the advisor for the club, however he is still not listed under the club advisor drop down menu. I have submitted another support request for this.August 29, 2019 at 2:39 PMRejectedFall fundraiserWomens Health Club08/29/201909/30/2019We will be teaming up with the family medicine club for the system pin sale and the white coat embroidery for MS1s as our fundraisers for Fall 2019.June 5, 2025 at 8:13 PMApprovedFall Doughnut and Apple Cider SaleSAAO06/05/202510/09/2025As a fall fundraiser, SAAO would like to sell fresh apple cider and doughnuts in the Vora Lounge during lunch (11:30-1) on October 9th. Phone number 814-452-3935) Since 1980, 8,839 newcomers have been resettled in the Erie area with assistance from USCRI. Refugees resettled in Erie come primarily from Bhutan, Eritrea, Somalia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Syria, Iraq, Ukraine and Russia. Newly arrived refugees receive a comprehensive set of services including housing placement, cultural orientation, school enrollment, coordination of initial health appointments, and employment preparation and placement. I have reached out to Gretchen Fairly, Development Associate at USCRI and she said she would love to receive new or gently used donations to ensure that each refugee is provided with basic items that are essential to daily life. Some essential items she listed were first aid kits, thermometers, masks, diapers, and baby products. I have attached a full list of needed items to this form. I would love to have a donation box outside the security office where students could drop off essential items! Every item donated will count for 0.5 volunteer hours and students can receive up to a maximum of 3 volunteer hours. I would like to have the drive from September 19th - 28th to ensure enough time for students to get the essential items. The Class of 2025 student council board will collect all donated items and deliver them to the USCRI at a later date.September 12, 2023 at 10:18 AMApprovedErie Zoo's Annual ZooBooSOMA09/12/202310/20/2023SOMA is looking to gather a group to volunteer at Erie Zoo’s ZooBoo event.
