March 23, 2022 at 12:10 PMRejectedWeight Stigma and Mental HealthMental Health Task Force03/23/202204/13/2021This will be a MHTF-guided discussion on the impact of weight stigma on mental health and health outcomes. We will discuss how weight stigma in medicine has affected our relationship with medical practitioners and could affect our future patients. Using examples from medical and public health literature, we’ll examine our view of obesity as an epidemic and as a measure of mortality risk, and how that has influenced medical perspectives on weight. We will also discuss the genetic and socioeconomic components of weight, and how those might be barriers to thinness. Finally, we will also brainstorm together how we, as future physicians, can help address weight stigma in our practice, such as asking permission to discuss weight and trusting patients to know their own bodies. Those who participate actively will get a $10 gift card, as this event will be in lieu of the monthly breakfast.
August 9, 2022 at 12:04 PMCancelledWeekly volunteeringMentoring08/09/202208/17/2022We would like to formally request that our weekly gathering to work with kids in partnership with the YMCA would be considered volunteering and that students could receive an hour of volunteering time for each time they attend. Outside meetings will still occur for the club but these weekly gatherings are strictly service oriented and volunteer based.
August 15, 2022 at 10:06 AMCancelledWeekly volunteeringMentoring08/15/202208/24/2022We would like to officially ask for what are now considered to be “weekly meetings” to be considered “weekly volunteering” by LECOM. This is because our weekly work with the YMCA kids clubs is constituted of playing with the kids and helping them with anything they might ask of a mentor. We do not discuss club issues at these weekly gatherings but rather spend 1 -1.5 hours volunteering to work with the kids affiliated with the Y and thus our club. Therefore, we would like for these gatherings to be recognized as volunteering by the school.

January 24, 2024 at 6:41 PMApprovedWeekly after-school program with the MCRCInternational Medical Society01/24/202402/01/2024Erie's Multicultural Resource Center (MCRC) holds an after school program everyday from 3-5pm. Through this program, they help guide middle to high school students in their academics and social interactions as they adapt to their new life in the U.S. IMS club has been the main club from LECOM to volunteer and collaborate with the MCRC. In the past, there had been recurring volunteer events with the MCRC and IMS club; however due to COVID, these events had come to a hiatus. Now, there has been a new opportunity for IMS club to lend a hand to the MCRC with their after-school program. IMS club volunteers would come in once a week to help tutor students in math, science, and English. We would volunteer on Wednesdays from 3-5pm at the MCRC located at 554 East 10th Street, Erie, PA 16503. During our time there, there will always be at least 3 adult MCRC staff members to supervise, be in control, and take responsibility for the program and the children. Clearances for PA mandated state laws, including background checks and fingerprint checks are required of all volunteers, and will be completed before attending the program. For further contact and information, you can reach out to Francesca Tronetti, the Director of Youth Services at the MCRC (814-455-0212), and/or Yuri Becerra, the Truancy Team Leader at the MCRC (814-566-3706). August 9, 2022 at 5:53 PMRejectedVolunteering at the Community Blood BankClass of 202508/09/202209/13/2022The Community Blood Bank in Erie is starting a new volunteer program in hopes of generating more follow up donations with the help their volunteers. After donating blood, the donors are sent to the refreshment area of the center or drive so that they can relax for 10 minutes and have a snack. Once the donor is done with their snacks, there are no other interactions with staff, and they leave. There is a very small chance they come back and donate again in 56 days which is the reason why the volunteer program was started. The community blood bank felt that the final step of the donation process was lacking and thought having volunteers greet donors in the refreshment area could greatly impact the donation process. The role of the volunteer will be to thank the donor for their donation, get feedback from the donor, and most important, ask the donor to schedule a follow up donation. A volunteer at the last part of the donation could make a huge difference in getting donors to return for another donation. Asking for a follow-up donation is the most crucial item, because more consistent donors mean a better blood supply. Students will be able to sign up for shifts well in advance and will receive volunteer hours for their participation. Every hour spent volunteering will count towards one volunteer hour. Depending on the blood bank's COVID Mask Rule, masks may be required for anyone volunteering on site.
