Our efforts will be focused on mentoring and guiding these students towards understanding anatomy in their own way, with the intent to foster an environment that promotes collaborative learning with open feedback responses from medical students who have already completed anatomy. We believe this could be a great opportunity for MMS students as an opportunity to learn how they will shape their study habits, and for our volunteers it will be an opportunity to reinforce our future physician skills of mentorship and educating.March 27, 2019 at 11:03 AMApprovedWildMedWilderness Med03/27/201905/03/2019Wilderness Medicine, Emergency Medicine, and Military Medicine Clubs are partnering to host an event called WildMed. This is a fantastic opportunity for osteopathic medical students to advocate to congress on behalf of the profession, as well as network and meet physicians from their home state. There is a training provided by the AOA prior to the congressional meetings to educate students about the issues that will be discussed in the meetings. This year, it is incredibly important to have a good LECOM representation at DO Day, as two LECOM students will be seated on the National SOMA Board of Trustees. Rebecca Wolff will be serving as the next National SOMA President, and I will be serving as the Region I Trustee. Having LECOM students support the mission of National SOMA by advocating at DO day on the Hill would highlight the importance of student participation, and by having a large student representation we will be showing support for Rebecca in this role. I have attached a tentative memorandum provided by the AOA in the additional documents section of this request. The hotel is DoubleTree by Hilton in Silver Springs. There will be a sign up sheet provided to determine those eligible for attending. As per the LECOM policy on conference travel, any student wishing to attend the conference must have a 3.0 GPA, which will be verified by student affairs prior to accepting a student on the trip. Other eligibility will be determined based on class attendance requirements. If there are still students in excess of how many people we are able to transport, priority will be given to current SOMA officers, previous SOMA officers, and SGA officers. Students will be required to fund their own meals while at the conference unless otherwise provided by the AOA. It will be the responsibility of each student to verify their eligibility status with their advisor, as well as academic standing with Student Affairs, prior to attending. Each student will also be responsible for filling out their own excused absence form and submitting it to the appropriate personnel. The CoC is in constant need of everyday items that are provided for the residents at their emergency shelters. Thus, the Medical Spanish Club is hoping to sponsor a donation drive for our club members and other LECOM students to participate in to provide the CoC with a surplus of goods for those in need. When This Will Occur: We are looking to collect donation items throughout the week of April 10-14th. A collection box will be placed inside the security office during this 5-day time period for students to drop off their donation items are their convenience. Angelina Stone, the President of the MSC, will then plan to drop off the donated items to the CoC on that following Saturday, April 15th. Advertisement: An email will be sent out by Dr. Shabloski on behalf of the MSC to MS1s, MS2s, and faculty. The email will contain a short excerpt of the purpose of this donation drive, the drop off dates, and a google spreadsheet to sign up. The signup sheet will display the desired items to be donated to the CoC, and students and faculty will be able to put their name down for what they would be able to provide. We will be offering 0.5 volunteer hours per product, with a cap at 2 volunteer hours per student. Volunteers/Participants: The google document will then give the MSC a headcount on the total number of participants of this donation drive. On April 14th, the end of the collection period, the items donated will be counted by MSC cabinet members in order to confirm the amount donated correlates relative to the number of items expected per the signup sheet. COVID Mitigation Plan: Since all donation items will be collected in a box within the Security Office on LECOM property, all students donating must keep within LECOM’s current COVID guidelines. As of now, students donating are required to wear face masks. Additionally, when Angelina Stone, MSC President, donates the items to the CoC on April 15th, she will be required to wear a face mask in order to abide by the school’s COVID guidelines as well. Our Primary Contact at the CoC: If there are any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to the interim director of the CoC, Chris Tombaugh, at (814)-456-6661. Education Purpose: To build camaraderie and foster an altruistic spirit amongst our classmates, while becoming educated on the needs of our local community. We will be asking Dr. Shabloski to send out an email to MS1/MS2 and faculty, using the following message: (Sent on behalf of the Medical Spanish Club) Paging all students doctors, Medical Spanish Club is working with the Community of Caring to host a donation drive and provide an opportunity for students to earn volunteer hours! Both forms of advertisement can be found on the next page of this document. Volunteers/Participants: The club is inviting everyone who attends or works at LECOM to join the celebration at Chipotle. Nevertheless, it is expected for approximately 15-40 students to partake in this fundraiser (hopefully more attend!). Sal comes from a Latino family and grew up speaking Spanish; additionally, he has had plenty of knowledge on the importance of speaking Spanish as a healthcare worker. Thus, he is a perfect candidate to teach beginner Spanish to LECOM students! The workshop will be held over zoom, and Sal will focus on teaching Spanish phrases commonly used in a clinical setting and will expand on his experience as a Spanish-speaking medical student to better prepare students for rotations and residency. When This Will Occur: We are looking to hold the zoom session on March 28th, 2024, from 5-6 PM. Advertisement: An email will be sent out by Dr. Shabloski on behalf of the MSC to MS1s and MS2s. The email will contain a short excerpt of the purpose of this Spanish workshop, the date and time it will be occurring, and the zoom information for students to join. Additionally, a message will be sent out on the MS1 and MS2 GroupMe chats for further advertisement. Volunteers/Participants: MSC is expecting to have roughly about 25-50 students attend the zoom session. COVID Mitigation Plan: Since this will be held entirely over zoom, no one participating in the workshop would be at risk of being exposed to COVID-19. Our Primary Contact: If there are any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to Salvador Hernandez at shernandez88575@med.lecom.edu or (626)-297-5015. Education Purpose: This workshop aims to expand students’ Spanish vocabulary, help students become more comfortable speaking Spanish so as to be prepared to implement what they’ve learned during rotations, and to teach students the importance of learning Spanish to establish better doctor-patient-relationships later on in their careers. The e-mail that Dr. Shabloski will send out to MS1/MS2 students and faculty: (Sent on behalf of the Medical Spanish Club) Hi everyone, Medical Spanish Club is excited to be hosting a Spanish workshop on March 28th, from 5-6 PM! The workshop will be held over zoom, and it will be taught by MS4, Salvador Hernandez. Sal grew up in a Latino family and speaks fluent Spanish. Through the last year-and-a-half of his rotations, he’s gained significant knowledge regarding the importance of implementing Spanish in a clinical setting to prevent miscommunication citation errors and provide the best care possible for Spanish-speaking patients. Not only will he discuss this, but he will also be teaching basic Spanish phrases that are commonly used in a doctor-patient interaction. This will give students the basics and help them become more comfortable speaking Spanish during rotations and residency, as well as help to prepare MS1s for the Spanish summer course coming up in just a few months!
