On October 13th, Participants ruck, walk, or run a 10K with a bag filled with donations (canned food, clothes, coins etc). LECOM Military Medicine would like to collect supplies from the student body to carry and then donate on the day of the event, starting on Aug 30th. We would like the ability to set up a collection box to collect donations during Lunch and in the mornings in the LECOM Cafeteria. The collections will take place from August 30th to October 11th. Due to the size of the event, the press will be expected to be present, but we did not contact them ourselves. On the day of the event , members of LECOM's Military Medicine club will be wearing club shirts with the LECOM name on them as well as carrying the donated items to the final collection point.

Dogs provided by Dr. Dunbar will be there as well to make the table more approachable. We also plan on asking these individuals about their experience with healthcare in order to improve ourselves as future physicians.

I'd like to nominate our support for International Rescue Committee. This organization is very well known and has been around for quite some time. They are based out of New York and they have received 4 stars from Charity Navigator. Their primary goal is to respond to humanitarian crises all over the world as well as in the U.S, including bringing primary care to refugees and at risk populations. This organization spends 89% of its budget on programs, which mean the majority of our funds raised for them will go to helping people in need. I would still like to use the coffee fundraiser as mentioned before from Jo Coffee, since we will be getting 42% of sales toward our fundraiser. Other fundraisers I've looked into do not offer this much turn around on sales. Once the orders are finished being placed, I would submit the order and then the coffee would be delivered to LECOM for me to distribute to students who have purchased. Then once LECOM has recieved the fundraiser check from the coffee company we can easily make the payment to IRC online. Please let me know if there is anything I can clarify and I welcome any feedback on this project. Thank you for considering my request.

One way to help inspire and "relax" students would be to display a motivational quote for the week. If possible, approximately 20 minutes prior to the 1st lecture starting on each Friday morning, I would like to display on the PC/projector a different motivational/inspirational quote for the week.
December 12, 2018 at 11:16 AMCancelledHomeless Shelter Overflow Foot ClinicSOMA12/11/201801/14/2019LECOM SOMA would like to continue participating in the foot care clinic at the Homeless Shelter Overflow sponsored by Erie United Methodist Alliance. The care and education offered by medical students to this population offers invaluable experience and opportunity to practice our osteopathic values. The Homeless Shelter Overflow was developed in response to the growing homeless population in Erie and the limited resources for shelter during the harsh winter months. The program runs from late November through late March. The overflow is sponsored by a local place of worship for 2 weeks and then switches to another participating location. The overflow shelter is staffed by volunteers from the parishes as well as from community organizations in Erie. The "guests" (homeless) staying at the shelter are housed for the night until 7 am the next morning. The guests have access to showers, personal care products, and a cot. Additionally, they have access to health resources (faith community nurses through Erie United Methodist Alliance: Healthcare for the Homeless Partnerships) and other local organizations such as Community Health Net. Barbara Lewis, RN, is a Faith Community Nurse and director of EUMA Healthcare for the Homeless. She has been instrumental in implementing the healthcare advocacy at the overflow clinic. She has created a strong relationship with both LECOM SOMA and Bridging the Gaps to initiate programs allowing LECOM students to work with underserved populations. She is very enthusiastic about this partnership with LECOM SOMA and requested to share her contact information to anyone whom may have questions regarding this program. The Homeless Shelter Overflow Foot Clinic was started by medical student Sarah Edwards under the direction of Professor, Dr. Sarah McCarthy. The foot clinic is an adjunct to the overflow shelter, allowing medical students to have the opportunity to interact with homeless individuals as well as provide one-on-one healthcare. The foot clinic is scheduled for every Monday evening from approximately 6-9 pm. The first Monday we would potentially look to start is January 14, and the last scheduled date is March 25. The schedule of the dates and locations of each overflow shelter are included in the attachment. Alanna and Angela are hoping LECOM SOMA can continue working with EUMA and the Homeless Shelter Overflow. We would like to continue practicing our best safety practices while being overseen by Barbara during our time at the clinic. Three students will be scheduled at each foot clinic along with a faculty advisor and at least one of the SOMA Local Healthcare Disparities Coordinators (the role that Angela and Alanna hold currently). The students will meet in the LECOM main campus parking lot and commute to the overflow shelter location together. The interaction between the medical student and the guest of the shelter includes taking a history of the patient, documenting it in their chart, testing pedal pulses, examining the feet for signs of infection/open sores. Students also clean their feet with gloves and antiseptic wash while also offering the patient clean, dry socks. Throughout the process, volunteers are educating the patients on when to visit a doctor and the importance of diabetic foot care. The information from the session is used by the Faith Community Nurses as well as a rotating podiatrist who attends the overflow shelter on selected weeks to follow up with the guests. Medical students are required to attend a training session prior to attending foot clinic where they are trained on the homeless community, how to provide foot care, how to document the patient history, and relevant health topics to discuss with the guest. We hope to conduct this session the first week of the spring semester, the week of Jan 7-11. We would like to use the 2nd floor, main conference room. Foot care is a very important aspect in this population as their main form of transportation is on foot, often through the snow with improper foot wear. Many of these individuals also do not have access to soap, running water, or dry towels. Some of these individuals are unable to bend forward and reach their feet. Not only is the medical student providing care and delivering knowledge to the homeless individual, but they are also rebuilding a relationship with the healthcare system. Many of these individuals have been mistreated by healthcare practitioners due to stereotypes and a misunderstanding of the unique needs associated with serving this population. Additionally, this experience will also provide medical students with the opportunity to work with an underserved population and further develop a sense of empathy and understanding aligning with the osteopathic profession.
