Purpose: To provide an opportunity for LECOM MS1s and MS2s to hear from physicians about their specialties directly. The event is open to all LECOM students. Funding: No funding is necessary for this event. The general breakdown of the event will include a 30 minute introduction from the physicians. They can discuss bread and butter cases, unique cases that appeared during practice, etc. In the last 30 minutes, students may ask specific specialty questions. SGA board members will assist in leading the Q&A panels.

The goal of this forum is to show students interested in family medicine the wide range of options they can have when they choose to specialize in family medicine. After she gives them a look into what her daily life looks/looked like she is willing to hold a Q&A in regards to being an osteopathic family medicine physician. At this event we would like to serve Mighty Fine Donuts and have canned soda/ water available for our attendees. We also have free SAACOFP pens and other trinkets that we would like to give out to people in attendance in hopes of gaining more members. The event would be on September 20th 2023 from 5:30 - 7:30 in Vora lounge. The people distributing the donuts would wear gloves when passing them out.
August 18, 2023 at 1:31 PMCancelledIntubation Clinic - Dr. RisaviEmergency Medicine08/18/202311/11/2023We would like to give our members the opportunity to participate in an intubation clinic run by Dr. Risavi, our club advisor. Dr. Risavi would like to come in on a Saturday to talk to EM club members about respiratory emergencies and intubation as an important clinical skill. There will be a presentation to discuss the importance of airway management, and to familiarize students with protocols and techniques. There will then be a hands-on learning opportunity for students to participate in practicing intubation techniques. It will give our members the chance to interact with one another while learning valuable skills they will learn more about on rotations. All equipment for the interactive activity will be provided by Dr. Risavi. A sign-up sheet will be provided for students to participate with a maximum of 30 students allowed to sign-up. Students will adhere to current COVID Regulations set by LECOM. Our Club Advisor, Dr. Risavi, has approved of the event and will be in attendance. This event will be held on Saturday November 11th in Pharmacy Lecture Hall A and the OPP Lab from 8:00am – 4:00pm.

The program aims to bridge the gap between experienced 2nd year students and incoming 1st year students, facilitating a smooth transition into the rigorous environment of medical school. Through mentorship, 2nd year students can offer valuable insights, advice, and encouragement to their 1st year mentees, helping them navigate the challenges of the curriculum, develop effective study strategies, and maintain a healthy work-life balance. Furthermore, the mentorship training program fosters a sense of camaraderie, creating a supportive network where 1st year students feel comfortable seeking guidance and mentorship from their more experienced peers. Ultimately, the program aims to enhance the overall academic success, personal growth, and professional development of both 1st and 2nd year medical students, while fostering a collaborative and nurturing learning environment within the medical school community. Funding: No funding is needed for this event. Timeline: The mentor applications should be submitted by 5/30/2023. The list of students will be reviewed by Dr. Thielman and Dr. Lee by mid-June. After they approve the list, we would forward the list of students to student affairs so that they too can approve the list. The general breakdown of the event will include me presenting the mentorship training PowerPoint to prospective mentors for 45 minutes. There will also be a separate mental health presentation given. Afterwards, I will address any questions the mentors have. The film recently won many awards, especially for being an all-asian cast, this is huge for the community. This event will hold academic purpose by educating others of appreciation for other cultures. There will be COVID-protocols in place.

They have done amazing work and have made a difference in the lives of roughly 10,000 individuals yearly. Their mission is to enable, educate and empower the visually impaired through supporting, motivating, and mobilizing preeminent eye hospitals, blind schools, vision professionals, technology innovators, governments and nongovernmental organizations serving the underprivileged segments of Indian society. Cards will be made by students to bring joy to residents, so these cards will include writing from students. Students will make or fill out cards to be distributed to SLC Residents. This will be a contactless event, and we propose having collection boxes near the security doors. Students will be able to leave their cards for collection. Cards will be picked up at the end of the drive by Paarth Sharma or Co-Chair Smaran Teru. We will advertise this event to the entire Class of 2025 and class of 2026, so they are able to participate. Cards should be dropped off at the security office or at Colleen's desk on the second floor. This will be done in a contact-free manner. As has been done in other clubs, service hours will be provided with 3 cards = 1 hour of service. Cards will be dropped off at the LECOM Living Center - coordinated with Emily Carver - ecarver@lecomslc.org. Why: SOMA wants to create a COVID-safe opportunity for students to get involved in the Erie community. Having this card drive creates an event that allows LECOM students to reach out and be involved with the school and community. As this event has been very successful in the past, and Dr. Silvia Ferretti commented on what a nice event it was last year when we had the cards at Colleen’s desk, we really would like the opportunity to have it again. Here is the request for the drive that was approved last year: Idea: SOMA will be putting together a Holiday Card drive. This will be a contactless event, and we propose having collection boxes at the entrance to Main Campus. Students will be able to leave the cards for collection. Items will be picked up at the end of the drive by myself (Ellie Schommer) or Co-Chair Garrett Kettle. We will advertise this event to the entire Class of 2024 and class of 2025 so they are able to participate. At the conclusion of the drive, I will arrange a date and time to drop off the supplies to St. Mary’s Senior Living Center. This will be done in a contact-free manner. Why: SOMA wants to create a COVID-safe opportunity for students to get involved in the Erie community. Having this drive creates an event for LECOM students to reach out and be involved with the Erie community. A google form will be provided ahead of time for students to submit any questions they want to ask the presenters. This will be a great event for students to gain some insight from peers that very recently went through the process.

The purpose of this event is to allow for a break from our studies and facilitate a mental health break for our students. Additionally, this would help enhance the camaraderie of the class of 2025 as we head into our final semester of didactic learning. Details: I was thinking 30 tickets based upon a current ongoing poll within the class (could be less). Once the results of the poll is finalized later this week, I will have a set interest of the number of students interested in tickets. The prospective date is Nov 5th at 7 pm. I have spoken with an Otters representative and he said: "Our ticket prices are $14 center ice, $12 west end or $10 east end." If we reserve 30 tickets the cheapest option would be $300 with the most expensive being $420. CARP plan: as this is an event during the (hopefully) low covid incidence rate in erie county, we would not have a specific COVID plan in place. However, each student will be sitting in a designated section surrounded by other lecom students to ensure that the spread of any potential diseases can be limited. Additionally, we will have an exact list of students that attended the event in case there is a need to contact them afterwards. Again, this would be an excellent way for LECOM students to get out and enjoy the many great events that Erie has to offer while also serving as a mental health escape for a few hours!

We have been requested to help transport residents in wheelchairs from the building to the campfire (on site), cook hot dogs and s'mores, and return residents back to the building after the event ends. No more than 10 volunteers are needed. RSVPs and Covid vaccine documentation will be sent to lecom.militarymedicine@gmail.com prior to event. COVID Policy: All volunteers, staff, and residents are to wear masks at all times other than eating. All parties will also show proof of 2 COVID vaccines and a booster. All club members will send said documentation to me, Daniel Rabe, and I will communicate them as necessary to our POC (Ken Vybiral, 814-878-4961, kvybiral@pa.gov)

This event is to join with other people throughout Erie county to clean up Presque Isle State Park. This is an opportunity to get volunteer hours cleaning up the beaches. This event is being coordinated through Lynn Armel from the Erie County Department of Planning & Community Development. They have assigned our group to meet at the East Ave. Boat Ramp on East Ave., Erie, PA, 16507 Cleaning supplies are being provided by Erie County. COVID-19 Mitigation : This event will be outdoors and students will be provided with gloves to limit risk of infection from items picked up and working with others. Students will also be asked to wear masks while at this event.

After hearing him talk at SOMA's Summer Leadership Meeting (SLM) in Chicago in July, I have invited Dr. Kevin Klauer, CEO of the AOA, to come speak to our campus on Mentorship in Medicine. Dr. Klauer is a board certified EM Physician who has held many leadership positions with various medical organizations (ACEP, ACOEP, AOA). He has earned numerous awards for his mentorship and leadership, including the 2018 ACOEP Educator of the Year award. Dr. Klauer knows what it is like to be a physician, friend, and mentor, and he shares his experiences so well with students. As part of a panel at SOMA's SLM, Dr. Klauer emphasized the importance of the Mentor-Mentee relationship in medical school as well as while practicing medicine. This talk will be given immediately prior to the Big training session to kick off the Big/Little program for the year. As of now, we are requesting to have this be an in person talk in Lecture Hall D, and will be open to any first or second year student who wants to attend. We will require masks and practice appropriate social distancing. If the COVID climate changes and we need to switch our event to Zoom, we are willing to do so to accommodate the safety of all attendees.

This is because our weekly work with the YMCA kids clubs is constituted of playing with the kids and helping them with anything they might ask of a mentor. We do not discuss club issues at these weekly gatherings but rather spend 1 -1.5 hours volunteering to work with the kids affiliated with the Y and thus our club. Therefore, we would like for these gatherings to be recognized as volunteering by the school.
